Suchismito Khatua

Research Assistant, EnglishBioIf art is contingent rather than necessary, and often distinct from lived experience, how can it be mobilized to effect political change? In broaching this question, Suchismito Khatua’s research girdles the idea of the avant-garde, and its many figurations in a transnational and translational frame. Thus far, Smito has studied, presented, and published on the theory of the avant-garde, modernist “minor”/ “underground” literary cultures in the Bangla, Hindi, and Marathi languages, and concomitant histories of far-left militancy in post-independence India. His current interests span the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, histories of labor, subalternity, and resistance, theories of affect and sexuality, psychoanalysis, and translation.
Smito was formerly affiliated with the Centre for English Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where he worked as a UGC Research Fellow and Undergraduate Course Instructor. In 2022, he was a visiting fellow in the research cluster “Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective” and the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School at Freie Universität Berlin.
Much of Smito’s thinking on living, and love, sweeps along a scissored trajectory of anarcho-communism and intersectional, anti-assimilationist queer politics. Poetry sustains him. -

Mengyao Liu

BioI am broadly interested in the production of knowledge in ancient worlds, with a particular interest in the Greco-Roman and Chinese traditions. My curiosity is a comparative and genealogical one at root: by comparing different societies, I seek to grasp the historicity of intellectual practices and the ideas thus produced. Currently, my research interest focuses on astronomy and astrology in Ancient Greece and China.
While completing my B.A. in Classics at Sorbonne University, I investigated how the urban metamorphoses of Rome materialized the transformation of the political regime. My master's thesis at EHESS, "Statues pour les corps, livres pour les mots" : La vie (βἰος) et la rhétorique (λόγος) dans les Discours Sacrés, offers insight into the psychosomatic relations conceived by the Greeks. The inquiry breaks into two interdependent questions: the therapeutic usage of rhetorical practices and the unconventional representation of Asclepius in the Sacred Tales of Aristides.
Having one year of training in software engineering from Tsinghua University, I am also passionate about the potentials of digital humanities. -

I am particularly interested in the role of families within college choice decision-making and employ both qualitative and data science methods to investigate how familial values and knowledge is employed throughout the college application process for Latinx students.

BioOscar Daniel Mier, a driven neuroscience professional and Master of Science candidate in Symbolic Systems at Stanford University, exemplifies unwavering dedication to neuroscience, neuroimaging, and the welfare of veterans. With a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from the University of California, Riverside, and graduate training in Neuroimaging and Informatics from the University of Southern California, Oscar's academic journey has propelled him through a multifaceted career. His experience includes working as a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Etkin Lab, the United States Marine Corps, and a Site Lead Clinical Research Coordinator at the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Palo Alto Healthcare System.
Oscar's passion for helping others shines through his work as a Mobile Training Team S.T.E.M. Fellow with the Warrior-Scholar Project, where he tutored and mentored student veterans and active service members and coordinated academic boot camps at prestigious universities. In his most recent position as a Technical Solutions Engineer at Alto Neuroscience, Oscar managed neuroimaging data and trained clinicians on clinical study paradigms. Greg Priest

BioI am a PhD candidate (ABD) in History of Science at Stanford. I focus on the history and philosophy of biology and the historical sciences, with particular interests in Charles Darwin and in the sciences of complex systems.
Before coming to Stanford, I was a lawyer, serving as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and then representing Silicon Valley technology companies. I left the law for the software business, first as CFO of a publicly-traded software company, next as founding CEO of a software start-up, and finally as Chairman and CEO of a global, publicly-traded internet education company.
I did my undergraduate work at Princeton and got my law degree at Stanford. I also have a Masters of Liberal Arts from Stanford. I am married, have two children and one grandchild and am an avid hiker, skier, and cook.
