Meredith A. Henstridge

BioMeredith received a PhD in Applied Physics from the University of Michigan in 2018 and held a position as a postdoctoral scientist at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure of Dynamics and Matter in Hamburg, Germany from 2018-2022. Her expertise spans across the interfacing of metamaterials with nonlinear optics, spontaneous and coherent Raman scattering, nonlinear phononics, and ferroelectrics.
Meredith's current research at SLAC focuses on developing near-field-based approaches for delivering high-field mid-infrared and THz-frequency sources for experiments with LCLS-II, the development of efficient laser-driven devices for enabling high temporal-resolution experiments at the Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (MEV-UED) beamline, and efforts towards realizing an electron beam-based source that can deliver multi-cycle mid-infrared pulses at both high energies and high repetition rates for experiments with LCLS-II.
Meredith is one of the primary SLAC laser scientists supporting time-resolved experiments on the X-ray Pump-Probe (XPP) beamline, and she also supports the laser team at the Macromolecular Femtosecond Crystallography (MFX) beamline.

Charlie Heriot-Maitland
Adjunct Lecturer, Psych/Public Mental Health & Population Sciences
BioDr Heriot-Maitland is a clinical psychologist, trainer, researcher, and author. He is an international expert in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and specifically the application of CFT for voice-hearing, trauma, and for people with psychosis and complex needs. Dr Heriot-Maitland is an experienced CFT therapist himself, and for the last 10 years has been leading the international development, research, and training of CFT for psychosis. His clinical research in this area has been mainly carried out at King’s College London and University of Glasgow, supported by funding from the UK Medical Research Council.
Dr Heriot-Maitland has published extensively on the theory and application of CFT in academic journals, produced videos and training materials, and has co-authored a self-help book on CFT for voice-hearers (Routledge, 2022). He has also developed novel and innovative interventions, based on CFT, for applications in different sectors (e.g., healthcare, social care, and education). Since 2012, he has been co-director of a UK organisation, Balanced Minds, which specialises in providing CFT therapy and resources for the general public and CFT training and supervision for professionals. He has been delivering training sessions at Stanford since 2019, and has held an Adjunct Lecturer appointment with the university since 2022. -
Thomas Hersbach

BioThom Hersbach is a Policy Fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and an Associate Staff Scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. His interests span all areas of the energy transition, and his work ranges from basic science studies of water splitting catalysts to exploring the socio-technological contexts of the hydrogen economy and the future chemical refinery complex.
In his free time, Thom enjoys primal movement, running, weightlifting, (guerilla) gardening, baking sourdough bread, brewing coffee/beer, and reading about soil ecology. -

Temporary Contract Legal Fellow, Law Instructional SupportBioGina Hervey (she/her) is Stanford Law School’s first Sustainable and Humane Food Systems Legal Fellow. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley studying agroecology, anthropology, and the socio-economic and international politics shaping our food system, she spent several years working in the agroecology space in the United States and internationally. Gina returned to academia to complete a J.D. in environmental law at Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University (Haub Law) and a Master’s in Environmental Management at Yale School of the Environment.
Prior to her time at Stanford, Gina worked with several agricultural and food law nonprofits. Most recently, Gina was with the Food and Farm Business Law Center at Haub Law, working directly with farmers navigating complex legal frameworks; and the Center for Food Safety, where she focused on pressing impact litigation within the food law realm. -

John Higgins
Adjunct Professor, Materials Science and Engineering
BioJohn received a BS in biochemistry from Albright College and his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry from Brown University. After completing a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute in NYC in the departments of Positron Emission Tomography and Neurology, he joined the Medicinal Chemistry Discovery group at Johnson Matthey Biomedical. There he made several significant contributions to early research projects on new Pt- antitumor drugs and peptide-based diagnostic radio-imaging agents. After nearly a decade as a discovery med chemist, he moved on to drug development in positions of increasing responsibility at J&J and Sanofi-Aventis. He and his teams have specialized in the areas of drug delivery, solid state chemistry and biomaterials in relation to improving the bioperformance of therapeutic agents. Towards this end, he has led the successful implementation of a wide range of methodologies into drug discovery space including prodrug design for enhanced solubility/permeability, miniaturized polymeric amorphous dispersions and nanoparticle technologies.
John currently is Executive Director of the Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences department at Merck’s Discovery Center. In this multidisciplinary role, he is responsible for oversight of the biopharmaceutical and drug delivery aspects of Merck’s discovery programs (small molecules and peptides) as well as the identification of new enabling technologies. Over his over 30 year pharma career, he is co-inventor on 13 US Patents and author of numerous and diverse publications and book chapters in the fields of organic, solid state & medicinal chemistry and drug delivery.
John also currently serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he regularly teaches classes in various aspects of drug discovery and development.
