    BioGeorgios "George" Hilaris MD is a Gynecologic Oncology and Minimally-invasive Gynecologic Surgery Specialist.

    He received his residency training at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, in Los Angeles California and RUSH University Medical Center of RUSH Medical College in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his fellowship training at Stanford University in Palo Alto California.

    In his home country Greece, he is considered an innovator in Gynecologic Oncology and Laparoscopic/Robotic Gynecologic Surgery.

    Some of his pioneering work include the first in Greece laparoscopic radical hysterectomy with systematic pelvic and paraaortic lymph node dissection in 2004 as well as first Robotic-assisted surgical staging for endometrial cancer in 2009.

    In 2018 he also led the team that described the first in Greece, Robotic-assisted interval cytoreduction for advanced stage ovarian cancer.
    He has also published the first series of Laparoscopic staging of early stage cervical and endometrial cancers in Greece in 2008.

    He is Adjunct Faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine, since 2007.

    Since February 2018, he serves as the Director and Head of the 2nd Department of Gynecologic Oncology in Hygeia Hospital, the largest private medical center, in Athens Greece

    BioLynn Hildemann's current research areas include the sources and dispersion of airborne particulate matter indoors, and assessment of human exposure to air pollutants.

    Prof. Hildemann received BS, MS, and PhD degrees in environmental engineering science from the California Institute of Technology. She is an author on >100 peer-reviewed publications, including two with over 1000 citations each, and another 6 with over 500 citations each. She has been honored with Young Investigator Awards from NSF and ONR, the Kenneth T. Whitby Award from the AAAR (1998), and Stanford's Gores Award for Teaching Excellence (2013); she also was a co-recipient of Atmospheric Environment’s Haagen-Smit Outstanding Paper Award (2001).

    She has served on advisory committees for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and for the California Air Resources Board. She has been an Associate Editor for Environmental Science & Technology, and Aerosol Science and Technology, and has served on the advisory board for the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

    At Stanford, Prof. Hildemann has been chair of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and served as an elected member of the Faculty Senate. She has chaired the School of Engineering Library Committee, the University Committee on Judicial Affairs, and the University Breadth Governance Board.

    BioDr. Hill received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Ohio University. She completed her doctoral internship at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System and postdoctoral fellowship in the Psychiatry Department at the Stanford University School of Medicine where she currently serves as a Clinical Professor. Dr. Hill has published articles and made presentations related to psychology training, pain management, serious mental illness including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and sexual dysfunction.

    Dr. Hill's time is divided across clinical, research, administrative, and teaching domains. Her current clinical interests are varied including anxiety, mood disorders, relationship difficulties, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The bulk of her time is committed to psychology training as the Director of Clinical Training for the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium. On a national level, she currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).

    BioMichelle's work addresses a fundamental question in exoplanet habitability: determining the minimum planetary size required to maintain an atmosphere, a critical prerequisite for life as we know it. She found that stagnant lid (no plate tectonics) planets Earth sized and below orbiting in the habitable zone (HZ) of a Sun-like star need to be ≥ 0.8 Earth radii to maintain their atmosphere past 1 billion years. As a Stanford Science Fellow, Michelle will advance her research and expand her planetary habitability models to look at how tectonic regime, initial volatile content, stellar type, tidal locking and tidal heating effect the results of whether a planet smaller than Earth can hold onto it's atmosphere. Her faculty host is Laura Schaefer, Assistant Professor in the department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.

    Michelle also detects and refines the masses and orbits of exoplanets using a combination of radial velocity (RV), transit and astrometry. She is currently observing 10 known planet systems that have shown indications of additional planets in orbit in order to detect the long period outer companions. These observations have lead to the discovery of 3 planets so far.


    Michelle recently completed her PhD in Earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Riverside, where she developed research on exoplanet habitability while supported by the NASA FINESST award. She lead a catalog paper on the demographics of all the known planets in HZ of their star where she found evidence of the sub-Saturn valley in the HZ. During this time she was also a member of the TESS-Keck Survey (TKS) team that conducted RV followup of TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs) and she lead the discovery paper of TOI-1386 b and c.

    Michelle completed her post bachelor honours in astrophysics at University of Southern Queensland, Australia. Here Michelle worked on the occurrence rates of giant exoplanets in the habitable zone of their star and found that while giant planets are less likely to be found in the habitable zone than terrestrial planets, if each giant planet is host to more than one moon then exomoons could be more numerous than terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of their star. This work has direct implications for the fraction of stars in the galaxy that may host habitable terrestrial worlds.

    Prior to this Michelle completed her bachelors in physics at University of New England, Australia where she attended San Francisco State University during her year abroad. Here she contributed to a study of the Kepler habitable zone planets where she found that the distribution of planets within the habitable zone closely mirrored the distribution of all known planets. This discovery had major implications for the opportunities of statistical analysis of this relatively small group of habitable zone planets.


    Michelle loves flying! She was a commercial pilot before returning to school to study physics. She currently holds an Australian ATPL with plans to (one day!) convert this to an FAA APT.

    BioVayu fell in love with cooking at a young age in his multicultural home in Stockholm, Sweden. He first moved to the U.S to work in restaurants, but the flavors, textures, and sensations of the kitchen eventually led him to scientific research. He received his B.A in Chemistry and Biology at Carleton College in 2015. He completed his PhD in Biochemistry from Harvard University in 2020, where he worked in the lab of Emily Balskus to characterize strains and enzymes from human gut microbiota responsible for the metabolism of drugs and dietary compounds. As a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley, Vayu discovered and engineered filamentous fungi for sustainable foods in the lab of Jay Keasling. In addition, Vayu has trained at diverse gastronomic institutions, including Basque Culinary Center, Fundación Alicia, The Cultured Pickled Shop, and Michelin-star restaurants Alchemist, Blue Hill at Stone Barns. He is excited about building synthetic biology tools for fungi to unlock new discoveries within mycology, address sustainability challenges, and enable gastronomic creativity. His favorite fungi are Neurospora intermedia and chantarelles (both orange!).

    BioPaula J. Adams Hillard, M.D., is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine where she serves as Associate Chair for Medical Student Education. She earned a B.S. in Zoology from the University of North Carolina and obtained her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in OB/Gyn at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was on the faculty at the University of Virginia, and served as Professor in the Departments of OB/Gyn and Pediatrics at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (CCHMC) /University of Cincinnati Medical Center for 23 years. At CCHMC she was the founder of a postgraduate fellowship training program in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She currently directs the program in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford.

    She has been active on a number of national medical committees, including chair of the American College Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG) Committees on Patient Education, Adolescent Health, and Guidelines for Women’s Health; she is a past member of the Gynecologic Practice Committee, the Gynecology Document Review Committee, and the Ethics Committee. She was been an examiner for the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 1991-2015. She is a Board Member of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and was elected a fellow of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. She is a past president of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, and is an active contributor to the literature in adolescent gynecology and contraception with over 200 journal articles and abstracts published. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She is the sole editor of two textbooks: the 5-Minute Consult in Obstetrics and Gynecology (2008) and Practical Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (2013). She is the author of over 120 book chapters on women’s health. She has been a consultant and a member of tasks forces and committees for the CDC, the U.S. FDA, the NICHD, the AMA, American Cancer Society, and ACOG. In addition to her work as a member of editorial boards and as an ad hoc reviewer for professional publications, Dr. Hillard has extensive experience with the consumer press. She was a contributing editor to Parents magazine from 1982-1990, writing a monthly column on pregnancy and birth--and currently acts as an editorial consultant to women’s publications such as Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Glamour, YM, and Seventeen, as well as ABC News. She is a consultant to and a member of the medical advisory board of Clue, a menstrual cycle tracking app. She has been recognized for her teaching, and has been selected as one of 18 senior faculty master teachers/mentors for medical students at the Stanford University School of Medicine in a formal mentoring program called Educators for CARE: Compassion, Advocacy, Responsibility, and Empathy.

Since then I've taught at Harvard, UCLA, The University of Pennsylvania, The University of Michigan, Berkeley, and Stanford. I resumed my graduate career a little while back -- from a distance, as it were -- receiving the PhD in 2005.

    I'm married to another philosopher, Krista Lawlor.

    My interests continue to center in aesthetics, but they have spilled over into pretty much every branch of philosophy at one time or another.

    Wittgenstein, Culture and Value, 34: Im Rennen der Philosophie gewinnt, wer am langsamsten laufen kann. Oder: der, der das Ziel zuletzt erreicht.     BioDr. Hindin obtained his MD from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his general surgery training at Temple University School of Medicine, also in Philadelphia, and subsequently completed fellowship in surgical critical care at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Hindin is currently the Associate Chair of Innovation at Stanford University’s Department of Surgery. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stanford University in the section of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery and at the VA Palo Alto. Dr. Hindin additionally serves as Associate Director of Stanford University’s Biodesign Faculty Fellowship, a university-wide program that trains faculty members from medicine, engineering, and other schools in the process of creating health technology innovation, from needs-finding to commercialization.

    Dr. Hindin has a particular interest in training physicians to leverage story-based skills to increase the effectiveness of their communication. He has previously developed and taught a semester-long storytelling course at Stanford Biodesign, which trains physicians and engineers to create more effective pitches when seeking venture funding.

    BioPamela J. Hinds is Rodney H. Adams Professor in the School of Engineering, Professor of Management Science & Engineering, Co-Director of the Center on Work, Technology, and Organization, and on the Director's Council for the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. She studies the effect of technology on teams, collaboration, and innovation. Pamela has conducted extensive research on the dynamics of cross-boundary work teams, particularly those spanning national borders. She explores issues of culture, language, identity, conflict, and the role of site visits in promoting knowledge sharing and collaboration. She has published extensively on the relationship between national culture and work practices, particularly exploring how work practices or technologies created in one location are understood and employed at distant sites. Pamela also has a body of research on human-robot interaction in the work environment and the dynamics of human-robot teams. Most recently, Pamela has been looking at the changing nature of work in the face of emerging technologies, including the nature of coordination in open innovation, changes in work and organizing resulting from 3D-printing, and the work of data analysts. Her research has appeared in journals such as Organization Science, Research in Organizational Behavior, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Discoveries, Human-Computer Interaction, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Pamela is a Senior Editor of Organization Science. She is also co-editor with Sara Kiesler of the book Distributed Work (MIT Press). Pamela holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Science and Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

    BioMichael Hines is a historian of American education whose work concentrates on the educational activism of Black teachers, students, and communities during the Progressive Era (1890s-1940s). He is an Assistant Professor of Education, and an affiliated faculty member with the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Bill Lane Center for the American West. He is the author of A Worthy Piece of Work (Beacon Press, 2022) which details how African Americans educator activists in the early twentieth century created new curricular discourses around race and historical representation. Dr. Hines has published six peer reviewed articles and book chapters in outlets including the Journal of African American History, History of Education Quarterly, Review of Educational Research, and the Journal of the History Childhood and Youth. He has also written for popular outlets including the Washington Post, Time magazine, and Chalkbeat. He teaches courses including History of Education in the U.S., and Education for Liberation: A History of African American Education, 1800-The Present.

    BioStephen Hinshaw is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology and the Faculty co-Director of the Stanford Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center (cEMc). His laboratory develops and applies cutting-edge tools in chemical and structural biology to uncover fundamental cellular mechanisms and translate these insights into powerful new pharmacological strategies.

    Stephen received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and earned his Ph.D. from the Harvard Program in Genetics and Genomics, where he discovered fundamental mechanisms governing chromosome segregation during mitosis. He then conducted postdoctoral research as a Helen Hay Whitney Fellow supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Harvard Medical School, with additional training as a visiting postdoctoral fellow at the Janelia Research Campus. During this period, he used cryo-electron microscopy to determine the structures of protein complexes that underlie genetic inheritance in normal and cancer cells. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, Stephen led discovery efforts for new therapeutic modalities as a Senior Research Scientist in the Center for Therapeutics Discovery and at the Stanford Cancer Institute.
