John Wesson Ashford Jr

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioDr. Ashford is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (affiliated) at Stanford University and has been a staff psychiatrist since 2003 and the Director of the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System since 2007. Dr. Ashford is a Senior Research Scientist at the Stanford / VA Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Clinical Research Centers. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board and Chair of the Memory Screening Advisory Board of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, a Senior Editor of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, and the 14th President of the Society for Brain Mapping & Therapeutics.
Dr. Ashford obtained a BA the University of California, Berkeley in 1970. At UCLA (1970–1985) he attained an MD (1974) and PhD (1984), trained in psychiatry (1975-1979), co-founded the Neurobehavior Clinic, and was the first Chief Resident and Associate Director (1979-1980) on the Geriatric Psychiatry In-Patient Unit. He conducted the first double-blind study of an anti-cholinesterase drug (physostigmine) to treat Alzheimer patients (Ashford et al., 1981), a therapy which is now standard treatment for Alzheimer patients. Between 1980-1985, Dr. Ashford directed the Geriatric Psychiatry Out-patient Clinic at the Neuropsychiatric Institute and initiated the UCLA/Alzheimer PET scan study with Dr. David Kuhl.
Between 1979-1984 under Dr. Joaquin Fuster, Dr. Ashford completed his Ph.D. dissertation, a finalist for the Lindsley Prize for the best in Behavioral Neuroscience in 1984. With Dr. Fuster, he made the first proposal and physiologic demonstration of massive, reciprocal parallel information processing in the cerebral cortex (Ashford et al., 1985); a basis of memory, particularly that aspect of memory affected by Alzheimer’s disease (Ashford, Coburn, and Fuster, 1998). His Alzheimer and neurophysiology study led to the water-shed observation that neuroplastic memory mechanisms of the brain are specifically affected by Alzheimer pathology (Ashford & Jarvik, 1985; Ashford, 2015).
Dr. Ashford was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine between 1985-1990, helping to establish an NIA-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Center. There he published the first use of Modern Test Theory in the field of Medicine, “Item-Response Theory” analysis of the Mini-Mental State Exam (Ashford et al., 1989). He was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, Davis 1991-1992, at the Martinez, VAMC, and Chief of the Mental Hygiene Clinic. He was at the University of Kentucky from 1992-2003 as a tenured Associate Professor in Psychiatry, Neurology, and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry, where he continued his Alzheimer research. He proposed a “Time-Index” method to measure Alzheimer dementia severity (Ashford et al., 1995; Ashford & Schmitt, 2001), used in the UK Nun Study (Butler, Ashford, Snowden, 1996), and to study loss of cerebral perfusion in Alzheimer patients (Ashford et al., 2000). With Dr. James Geddes he showed the central role of paired helical filament pathology in destroying neuronal processes (Ashford et al., 1998).
Dr. Ashford’s long-term research interests are aging, Alzheimer’s disease, brain imaging, and memory mechanisms. He has developed early detection and measurement methods for mild cognitive disorders and Alzheimer’s disease, currently working on an internet program: www.memtrax.com . He is reformulating theories of Alzheimer pathology. As Director of WRIISC CA, he has studied traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, chronic multi-symptom illness, and other neuropsychiatric illnesses.

BioI'm interested in how mass extinctions affect different types of animals, and more broadly how animals respond to their environments in general. Half of my work involves experiments to better understand the differential responses of bivalves and brachiopods to temperature-dependent hypoxia and to euxinia in settings that mimic those at the end-Permian mass extinction. The other half uses the metabolic index to explore early animal evolution and modern ecophysiology.

Yusuf Ashktorab

BioYusuf Ashktorab is a medical student (Class of 2028) at Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM). His journey in medicine is driven by a passion for using technology, to reduce health disparities and improve patient care.
He has contributed to projects at Stanford University, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), focusing on topics such as predictive modeling for vaccine responses, the role of viruses in cancer development, and the use of Machine Learning and Large Language Models to diagnose Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu).
At HUCM, Yusuf serves as President of the Health Innovation and Technology (HIT) interest group and Vice President of Research and Technology for his class. In these roles, he is working to build a strong community centered on innovation and collaboration. -
Itai Ashlagi

BioItai Ashlagi is a Professor at the Management Science & Engineering Department.
He is interested in game theory and the design and analysis of marketplaces. He is especially interested in marketplaces, in which matching is an essential activity. markets, for which he developed mechanisms using tools from operations/cs and economics. His work influenced the practice of Kidney exchange, for which he has become a Franz Edelman Laureate. Ashlagi received his PhD in operations research from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
Before coming to Stanford he was an assistant professor of Operations Management at Sloan, MIT and prior to that a postdoctoral researcher at HBS. He is the recipient of the outstanding paper award in the ACM conference of Electronic Commerce 2009. His research is supported by the NSF including an NSF-CAREER award. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Ashley lab is focused on precision medicine. We develop methods for the interpretation of whole genome sequencing data to improve the diagnosis of genetic disease and to personalize the practice of medicine. At the wet bench, we take advantage of cell systems, transgenic models and microsurgical models of disease to prove causality in biological pathways and find targets for therapeutic development.

Amirsaman Ashtari

BioI am a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, jointly supervised by Ash Alizadeh MD/PhD and Mohammad Shahrokh Esfahani PhD. I developed several AI solutions for the Computer Vision and Computer Graphic domains during my PhD studies at KAIST and ETH Zurich. My PhD research outcome was recognized by winning the Young Researcher Award, and I was eager to apply all those AI techniques to biological data for cancer therapy. In the Alizadeh and Esfahani labs, I will develop AI solutions and computational tools to better understand the tumor microenvironment. Outside of my research, I enjoy loving my family, playing the piano, and listening to music.

BioI specialize in providing cardiac critical care to infants, children and adults with congenital heart disease and heart failure. I am the Associate Director for the Pulmonary Artery Reconstruction Program at Stanford, helping to coordinate comprehensive multidisciplinary care for children with severe pulmonary artery abnormalities and right ventricular dysfunction. I was a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Center for Biodesign in 2019-2020 and continue to work on development of new technologies for the unmet needs of pediatric patients. I have an interest in physician wellness and completed the Wellness Director course through the WellMD Center at Stanford.

Master of Arts Student in International Policy, admitted Autumn 2024BioOluwafunmibi Asunmonu is a driving force behind rural food security and resilience and has spent 3.5 years securing sustainable, catalytic financing for the climate adaptation of over 1M of the most vulnerable rural households in Africa while contributing to the development of scalable agricultural risk management solutions.
She advocates designing adaptable climate financing models for further vulnerable groups (women and youth). She has made significant contributions as a two-time speaker at the annual AGRF Summit and the AYuTe Africa Summit, a delegate at the World Bank Youth Summit and the UN ECOSOC Youth Forum, and a participant in the Nigeria National Economic Council meeting on Food Security held in the Presidential Villa. Additionally, she has contributed to technical agri-financing reports published by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Shell Foundation.
Funded by the Swiss Re Foundation, she graduated with a BA(Hons) in International Business and Trade as the Best Graduating Student from the African Leadership University, where she co-founded an Initiative that won the Queen’s Young Leader Award and interned with KPMG, Andersen, and GTB. At Stanford, she plans to leverage the innovation and exposure it offers to design improved climate-adaptation investment models.

She has been a Diverse Voices in Docs Fellow at Kartemquin Films, and her films have screened at the Toronto Arab Film Festival and the Egyptian American Film Festival.
