Helen L. Chen
Research Scientist
BioHelen L. Chen is a research scientist in the Designing Education Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. She holds an undergraduate degree in communication from UCLA and a PhD in communication with a minor in psychology from Stanford. Helen is a board member for the Association for Authentic, Experiential and Evidence-Based Learning (AAEEBL) and is a co-author of Documenting Learning with ePortfolios: A Guide for College Instructors and co-executive editor of the International Journal of ePortfolio. She works closely with the Association of American Colleges and Universities and consults with institutions on general education redesign, authentic assessment approaches, design thinking, and personal branding and ePortfolios. Helen's current research and scholarship focus on engineering and entrepreneurship education; the pedagogy of portfolios and reflective practice in higher education; and redesigning how learning is recorded and recognized in traditional transcripts and academic credentials.

Hugo Chen

BioHugo "Jiun-Yu" Chen is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He earned his M.S. in Photonics and Optoelectronics from National Taiwan University in 2019 and his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from National Dong Hwa University in 2017.
Prior to joining Stanford, Hugo worked as an R&D engineer at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the High Power Program and Analog Power/RF Specialty Technology from 2019 to 2022. His research experience includes investigating GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) for high power converter applications, oxide-based thin-film transistors (TFTs) for CMOS inverter applications, and III-V quantum dots molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) material growth.
As the first author, Hugo has published two peer-reviewed journal articles, six conference papers, and one US/KR/TW/CN/DE patent. He is currently advised by Professors H.-S. Philip Wong and Kwabena Boahen, and his research focuses on developing ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) for dendritic-centric learning.
In his leisure time, Hugo enjoys biking, playing badminton, and watching dramas. -
James K. Chen

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur laboratory combines chemistry and developmental biology to investigate the molecular events that regulate embryonic patterning, tissue regeneration, and tumorigenesis. We are currently using genetic and small-molecule approaches to study the molecular mechanisms of Hedgehog signaling, and we are developing chemical technologies to perturb and observe the genetic programs that underlie vertebrate development.

Jennifer Chen, MD

BioJennifer K. Chen, M.D., is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology. She co-directs the medical student sub-internship program. She completed medical school at Johns Hopkins University, residency at Johns Hopkins and University of California, Irvine, and completed a Howard Hughes Fellowship at Stanford University. Her clinical interests include contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, complex medical dermatology, skin cancer, and inpatient dermatology. She has served on the Board of Directors for the American Contact Dermatitis Society and as an invited member of the Contact Dermatitis Committee for the World Allergy Organization. She is currently the President-Elect of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

Jianqing Chen

Visiting Scholar, Mechanical Engineering - DesignBioI work on robotic remote control and manipulation systems utilizing reinforcement learning (RL). My focus is on developing RL-based algorithms that enable robots to learn optimal control strategies for tasks such as navigation, object manipulation, and interaction with dynamic environments. By training robots through trial and error, these systems continuously improve their performance, adapting to new situations and enhancing autonomous control. The goal is to achieve more efficient and precise robot behavior in real-world applications.
I worked over 7 years in investment and asset management. I lead 280 Capital, a Multi-Family Office with over $600M under management, focus on digital assets and cutting-edge technologies.
I have a strong background in AI, Storage, Encryption etc. I am in the great team to do designs in the latest enterprise-grade storage SSD system chips, from 16nm to 7nm, at Broadcom and SK Hynix. I also led the construction and optimization of large-scale biodata software and hardware data architectures at Roche to support scalable advanced DNA sequencing computations. I hold multiple U.S. patents, using various methods such as deep learning and AI to improve storage and computing efficiency. -

Jimmy Chen
Managing Director StorageX Initiative, Precourt Institute for Energy
BioJim Chen leads a number of energy programs at Stanford Energy,
including Stanford’s new Hydrogen Initiative; Stanford’s energy storage initiative,
StorageX; and Stanford’s integrated energy program, Stanford Energy Corporate
Affiliates (SECA). Dr. Chen was also the founding Managing Director of Bits & Watts,
Stanford’s initiative focusing on the grid of the 21st century, launched in 2016.
Dr. Chen is enthusiastic about the global energy transformation and building a more
sustainable society through innovation. At Stanford, Dr. Chen creates and expands
impactful global communities of practice that enable industrial-academic-government
collaboration in energy research and scale-up. Dr. Chen is also a leader in Stanford
Energy’s global events including its regional roundtables and Global Energy
Forum. Finally, Dr. Chen is deeply involved in Stanford’s innovation ecosystem,
advising student groups, start-up companies, and accelerators. Dr. Chen’s research
interests include hydrogen, energy storage, the circular economy, decarbonizing
transportation, and integrated energy systems. Dr. Chen’s teaching roles include
lecturing for Stanford’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and for
Stanford Energy’s Hydrogen Economy Seminar.
Dr. Chen is passionate about global energy entrepreneurship and innovation. He works
with energy agencies around the world promoting global collaboration, accelerating
innovation, and sparking entrepreneurship. He also serves on a number of advisory
councils, including on EPRI and GTI’s Low Carbon Research Initiative’s (LCRI)
technical advisory board.
Dr. Chen came to Stanford University after 25 years in industry, bringing a broad
background in energy and technology, with a specialization in technology and product
development. He has held technical positions at Lawrence Berkeley Labs, GTE Labs,
IBM, and AT&T Bell Labs, as well as technology executive positions at both starts-ups
and Fortune 500 companies, including FormFactor and Eaton.
Dr. Chen received a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MS from
the University of California, Berkeley — both in materials science and engineering —
and holds a BS from the University of California, Berkeley in electrical engineering. -

Julie Chen
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Endocrinology, Gerontology, & Metabolism
BioJulie Chen, MD, is a board-certified endocrinologist and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology at Stanford University. Dr. Chen diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions with a focus on thyroid and thyroid cancer. She also works closely with cancer specialists to treat the endocrine side effects associated with cancer treatments, such as immunotherapy. Dr. Chen recognizes that patients are more than their disease. She views her relationship with each patient as a partnership and develops a personalized care plan for each one. Dr. Chen is committed to helping patients achieve the best possible outcomes through comprehensive treatment.
Dr. Chen is also passionate about medical education and mentoring. She currently serves as the Program Director for the Endocrinology Fellowship Program at Stanford University. She has given numerous lectures to medical students, residents, and fellows.
