Nicole Franz
Research Scholar
BioNicole Franz (she/her) is an expert in the political economy of sustainable development. She has over two decades of experience working in intergovernmental organizations, namely the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development in Rome as well as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris.
As leader of the equitable livelihoods team in FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, Nicole focused on advancing global sustainability policy, making policy processes more inclusive, and empowering stakeholders.
Her role and leadership in the development and implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication cemented her dedication to bringing together responsible natural resource use with social development. She spearheaded efforts to embed these guidelines into national, regional, and global policy processes and initiatives relating to fisheries, food security, climate change, and biodiversity.
Also during her tenure at FAO, Nicole kickstarted the Illuminating Hidden Harvests initiative to generate and disseminate new evidence about the benefits, interactions, and impacts of small-scale fisheries to inform policy and practice.
Beyond her policy and research contributions, Nicole is a deeply committed mentor and capacity-builder. Over the past decade, she has supervised and mentored approximately 20 early-career scientists, interns, and young professionals and served as a guest lecturer. -
Hunter Fraser

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study the evolution of complex traits by developing new experimental and computational methods.
Our work brings together quantitative genetics, genomics, epigenetics, and evolutionary biology to achieve a deeper understanding of how genetic variation shapes the phenotypic diversity of life. Our main focus is on the evolution of gene expression, which is the primary fuel for natural selection. Our long-term goal is to be able to introduce complex traits into new species via genome editing. -

William James Frederick
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine
BioDr. William James Frederick III is the Medical Director of Case Management, Utilization Management, and the Physician Advisor Medical Director at Stanford Health Care. Prior to moving to Stanford in August 2023, Dr. Frederick was a Physician Advisor and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego Health. As an expert in Healthcare Quality Care Management, he has started internal physician advisor programs, redesigned utilization management workflow, led quality improvement initiatives around readmissions and length of stay, developed a General Inpatient Hospice program, partnered with a critical illness recovery hospital to improve quality and patient care, revamped and expanded health system charity policies, and implemented multidisciplinary team rounding. As a medical educator, Dr. Frederick served as the Course Director for 4th year medical students during inpatient medicine rotations across four hospitals. As an Internal Medicine Core Faculty Member, he instituted a weekly resident quality improvement and patient safety conference. He provided ongoing education to faculty, staff, and trainees on topics of inpatient clinical care, ethical use of hospice, critical illness recovery hospitals, patient flow, and quality management. His desire to give back to the community led him to service as faculty chair of the UC San Diego Faculty and Staff giving council.
Dr. Frederick is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Health Care Quality Management with a sub-certification as a Physician Advisor. He completed his residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and earned both an MD and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UC Davis. He holds a BS in Bioengineering from UC San Diego. He began his career by serving in the United States Marine Corps as infantryman from 1989-1993. -

Amy Freed
Artist-in-Residence in the Department of Theater and Performance Studies
BioAmy Freed is the author of Restoration Comedy, The Beard of Avon, Freedomland, Safe in Hell, The Psychic Life of Savages, You, Nero and other plays. She 's a past recipient of the Charles McArthur Playwriting Award (D.C.) The New York Art's Club Joseph Kesserling Award, a several-times winner of the LA Critic's Circle Award, and a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. Her work has been produced at South Coast Repertory Theater, New York Theater Workshop, Seattle Repertory, American Conservatory Theater, Yale Rep, California Shakespeare Theater, Berkeley Rep, the Goodman, Playwright's Horizons, Woolly Mammoth, Arena Stage and other theaters around the country.
Her most recent play is The Monster Builder, and she is developing commissions for Berkeley Rep, South Coast Rep and Arena Stage. She is currently Artist-in-Residence at Stanford University and also holds a Mellon Foundation Playwriting Residency for the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.
