Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe advent of high dimensional flow cytometry has revolutionized our ability to study and visualize the human immune system. Our group combines high parameter mass cytometry (a.k.a Cytometry by Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry, CyTOF), with advanced bio-computational methods to study how the human immune system responds and adapts to acute physiological perturbations. The laboratory currently focuses on two clinical scenarios: surgical trauma and pregnancy.

BioDr. Dyani Gaudilliere specializes in Dental Surgery and Oral Oncology in a hospital setting. As a hospital dentist she performs surgical treatment of infection and trauma to the teeth and supporting alveolar bone. She also performs medically necessary dental clearance and extractions in the context of larger medical conditions, such as cardiac disease, joint replacement, or organ transplantation. As an oral oncologist, she specializes in surgical dental treatment prior to, during, and following radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

BioOur lab works at the interface of biotechnology, computational biology, cellular biology, and clinical medicine to develop and apply new tools for characterizing genetic variation across single cells within a tissue with unparalleled sensitivity and accuracy. We are focused on applying these technologies to study cancer clonal evolution while patients are undergoing treatment with the aim of identifying cancer clonotypes that are associated with resistance to specific drugs so as to better understand and predict treatment response. We are also applying these methods to understand how more virulent pathogens emerge from a population of bacteria or viruses with an emphasis on developing a deeper understanding of how antibiotic resistance develops.

BioPrerana is a marine ecologist with over five years of experience working closely with fisher communities and recreational SCUBA divers in Lakshadweep, India, conducting ecological assessments of fishery-important small pelagic baitfish and collaborating with fishers to document traditional ecological knowledge for community-led fisheries management. Currently pursuing a PhD at Stanford University’s Department of Oceans, she is exploring the ecological interactions of shipwrecks and their role in socio-ecological systems through interdisciplinary research frameworks.

Enam Gbewonyo
Master of Fine Arts Student, Art Practice
BioEnam Gbewonyo is a British-Ghanian textile and performance artist, curator, and founder of the BBFA (Black British Female Artist) Collective - now defunct. Her art practice investigates identity – Black womanhood in particular, whilst advocating the healing benefits of craft. She uses performance as a vessel, creating live spaces of healing that direct audiences to a positive place of awareness, countering systems of oppression such as racism and sexism. Her work enables audiences to face the truth of the dark past surrounding colonial legacies and the emotions it brings forth.
Recent exhibitions include Memoria: récits d’une Histoire at Fondation H, Madagascar, Neo-Custodians: Woven Narratives of Heritage, Cultural Memory and Belonging at Bemis Center in Omaha, USA, DELLU her first institutional solo show at New Art Exchange, Nottingham, UK, Body Poetics at Southampton’s GIANT Gallery, and Rites of Passage at Gagosian London. Her work has been exhibited and showcased internationally at the 58th Venice Biennale, Art X Lagos, and UNTITLED Art Fair, Miami. Her performance films have been selected for notable film festivals including; Portland Dance Film Festival, Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Alchemy Film & Moving Image Festival and AVIFF Cannes Art Film Festival.
Gbewonyo’s works are in private and public collections including Fondation H, Madagascar and White & Case LLP, UK. She is a 2022 recipient of the Henry Moore Foundation Artist Award and winner of the 2022 Dentons Art Prize and New Art Exchange Future Exhibition Prize respectively. She is also a fellow of Black Rock Senegal, Bemis Center, (Omaha, USA) and Fondation H, Madagascar artist residencies. -

BioI am the coordinator of English for Speakers of Other Languages in the Stanford Language Center. Additionally, I teach courses in academic writing, speaking, and listening to graduate students. I also teach a pedagogy and practicum class in the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages for both undergraduate and graduate students who want to explore English language teaching in the future. My main areas of interest are writing, grammar, and extra-curricular communicative skills such as developing the cultural literacy to successfully write professional documents like cover letters, CVs, and resumes, as well as interact socially in professional and personal environments. I speak Spanish and French well, and a little bit of Mandarin and Esperanto.

Melina Gehring

Current Role at StanfordAs Research Safety Excellence Lead at Stanford Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), Melina provides high-profile project management, organizational development, and performance improvement for significant Research Safety undertakings that promote health, safety, and well-being among Stanford’s community of 10,000+ researchers. Her projects focus on Research Safety operational improvement (e.g., metrics development, service design); cross-departmental initiatives (e.g., reports and communications for research leadership, stakeholder events); and multi-year strategic initiatives (e.g., training needs assessment, standards development, knowledge management). Her role harnesses the energies and talents of a wide cross-section of the research community, including principal investigators (PIs), student researchers and post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists, scientific staff, building and district managers, and university administrators. Melina strives to position both EH&S and Stanford researchers for success in the coming era of research innovation, interdisciplinary complexity, and cutting-edge research methods and technologies.
As a Public Health Project Manager at Environmental Health & Safety, Melina supported the University’s endemic response across the main campus, Redwood City campus, and SLAC. She also served as a facilitator for the Public Health Steering Committee (PHSC), which is charged with the strategic oversight of emerging and endemic public health concerns for the University.
As a member of the Client Services team at University Human Resources (UHR), Melina supported Stanford's Flexible Work effort as the university identifies best practices to support on-site, hybrid, and remote work. She has served as the project manager of the Work Arrangement functionality in Axess and contributed to the university's COVID Compliance effort. She also led a process improvement project focusing on the Stanford Celebrates You program and helped design a strategy for future DEI-based employee recognition efforts at Stanford.
At the Stanford University Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Melina and her colleagues worked toward the vision of a disaster-resilient university. Since March 2020, Melina has supported the Stanford Emergency Operations Center's (EOC) strategic response to COVID-19 and has carried this commitment into her position at UHR as well as her current position back with EH&S.
Prior to this role with Environmental Health & Safety, Melina worked at Stanford's Office of International Affairs (OIA), where she helped develop strategy and communications infrastructure to support Stanford faculty, staff, and students with their global research and education initiatives. At OIA, Melina also managed the start-up phase of Stanford's new research center in Korea (SCIGC).
Melina is a Project Management Professional (PMP), a Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) and helped revive and grow the Community of Practice "Agile Stanford," which promotes Agile project management across campus.
Before coming to Stanford, Melina worked as an educational consultant in London (UK), supported international graduate students at Dartmouth College, and served as a desk officer at Germany's Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
Melina holds a Ph.D. in American Studies (University of Hamburg) and an M.Phil. in International Relations (University of Cambridge). She has published two books as well as several peer-reviewed articles in two different academic disciplines (American Studies and Musicology).
Outside of work, Melina volunteers as a board member of the Palo Alto Family YMCA with a focus on youth development programs. -

Benedikt joined the Amieva Lab from Germany in 2022. During his B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in zoology, he became fascinated with 3D imaging approaches to study small animal microanatomy. He spent his PhD developing in situ imaging approaches to study deep-sea symbioses and fell in love with studying host-microbe interactions. In the Amieva Lab, Benedikt will advance his previously developed correlative chemical imaging techniques to resolve metabolic and cellular interactions that drive H. pylori pathogenesis in the gastric glands.

Hester Gelber

BioHester Gelber specializes in late medieval religious thought. She has taught courses on philosophy of religion as well as medieval Christianity. She has written extensively on medieval Dominicans, including: Exploring the Boundaries of Reason: Three Questions on the Nature of God by Robert Holcot OP and most recently It Could Have Been Otherwise: Contingency and Necessity in Dominican Theology at Oxford 1300-1350. She has now retired.
Professor Gelber received her Ph.D. in History from the University of Wisconsin in 1974 and has taught at Stanford since 1978, beginning as a part-time lecturer in Philosophy before moving to Religious Studies in 1982. -
Pascal Geldsetzer

BioPascal Geldsetzer is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health and, by courtesy, in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. He is also affiliated with the Phil & Penny Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience at the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute, Department of Biomedical Data Science, Department of Health Policy, and the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences.
His research focuses on identifying and evaluating the most effective interventions for improving health at older ages. In addition to leading several randomized trials, his methodological emphasis lies on the use of natural experiments to ascertain causal effects in large observational datasets, particularly in electronic health record data. He has won an NIH New Innovator Award (in 2022), a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub investigatorship (in 2022), and three NIH R01 grants as Principal Investigator (in 2023 and 2024). In 2026, he was named one of the 100 most influential people in health and medicine globally by TIME Magazine. -

BioMichele Gelfand is the John H. Scully Professor of Cross-Cultural Management and Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business School and Professor of Psychology by Courtesy. She was formerly a Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Gelfand uses field, experimental, computational and neuroscience methods to understand the evolution of culture and its multilevel consequences. Her work has been published in outlets such as Science, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Psychological Science, Nature Human behavior, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, among others. Gelfand is the founding co-editor of the Advances in Culture and Psychology series (Oxford University Press). Her book Rule Makers, Rule Breakers: How Tight and Loose Cultures Wire the World was published by Scribner in 2018. She is the Past President of the International Association for Conflict Management and co-founder of the Society for the Study of Cultural Evolution. She received the 2016 Diener award from SPSP, the 2017 Outstanding International Psychologist Award from the American Psychological Association, the 2019 Outstanding Cultural Psychology Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the 2020 Rubin Theory-to-Practice award from the International Association of Conflict Management, the 2021 Contributions to Society award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management, and the Annaliese Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation. Gelfand was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2021.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy scholarly focus is on puzzling and complex conditions. Our work aims to improve patients' diagnostic journeys, characterize poorly understood diseases, discover biological mechanisms, find treatments, improve care models, and reach communities in need.
With the COVID pandemic, the puzzling and complex illness of Long COVID or post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) emerged. Together with a multidisciplinary group of physicians and researchers, we launched a program here at Stanford to advance the care and understanding of Long COVID. Our goal is to better understand the natural history, clinical symptomatology, immunological response, risk factors, and subtypes of Long COVID. We are also actively assessing treatment strategies for Long COVID and developing care pathways and tools for clinicians to help their patients with this and other related infection-associated chronic illnesses. -

Michael Gensheimer
Clinical Associate Professor, Radiation Oncology - Radiation Therapy
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsIn addition to my clinical research in head and neck and lung cancer, I work on the application of computer science and machine learning to cancer research. I develop tools for analyzing large datasets to improve outcomes and safety of cancer treatment. I developed a machine learning prognostic model using data from around 13,000 patients with metastatic cancer which performs better than traditional models and physicians [PubMed ID 33313792]. We recently completed a prospective randomized study in thousands of patients in which the model was used to help improve advance care planning conversations.
I also work on the methods underpinning observational and predictive modeling research. My open source nnet-survival software that allows use of neural networks for survival modeling has been used by researchers internationally. In collaboration with the Stanford Research Informatics Center, I examined how electronic medical record (EMR) survival outcome data compares to gold-standard data from a cancer registry [PubMed ID 35802836]. The EMR data captured less than 50% of deaths, a finding that affects many studies being published that use EMR outcomes data.
