Pankaj Kapahi
Professor (Research) of Medicine (Endocrinology)
BioPankaj Kapahi is a Professor and aging researcher whose laboratory seeks to understand why organisms age and why the rate and consequences of aging differ so dramatically between individuals, sexes, and species. The lab approaches aging through the lens of evolution, asking how pathways that evolved to optimize growth, reproduction, and survival early in life can shape health and disease later in life.
A major focus of the laboratory is the interaction between nutrition, metabolism, reproduction, and aging. The lab has helped define how nutrient-sensing pathways, including TOR, dietary restriction, circadian biology, and metabolic adaptation regulate lifespan and age-related disease. More recently, this work has expanded to reproductive aging and the Reproductive Resilience Hypothesis, the idea that evolutionary pressures linking reproductive success to prolonged survival, repeated reproduction, and caregiving may have selected for biological programs that simultaneously support reproduction and somatic resilience.
Using comparative and experimental approaches across flies, worms, mice, and humans, the lab studies how these evolutionarily conserved programs influence brain aging, neurodegeneration, metabolic disease, reproductive aging, cell senescence, and resilience. The broader philosophy of the laboratory is that aging is best understood not as an isolated biological program, but as an emergent consequence of the evolutionary trade-offs among reproduction, nutrition, growth, maintenance, and survival. -
Zerina Kapetanovic
Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Computer Science and of Geophysics
BioZerina Kapetanovic is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University working in the area of low-power wireless communication, sensing, and Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Prior to starting at Stanford, Kapetanovic was a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research in the Networking Research Group and Research for Industry Group.
Kapetanovic's research has been recognized by the Yang Research Award, the Distinguished Dissertation Award from the University of Washington. She also received the Microsoft Research Distinguished Dissertation Grant and was selected to attend the 2020 UC Berkeley Rising Stars in EECS Workshop. Kapetanovic completed her PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 2022. -
Michael S. Kapiloff, MD, PhD
Reinhard Family Professor, Professor (Research) of Ophthalmology and, by courtesy, of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Michael S. Kapiloff is a faculty member in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine) and a member of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Although Dr. Kapiloff was at one time a Board-Certified General Pediatrician, he is currently involved in full-time basic science and translational research. His laboratory studies the basic molecular mechanisms underlying the response of the retinal ganglion cell and cardiac myocyte to disease. The longstanding interest of his laboratory is the role in intracellular signal transduction of multimolecular complexes organized by scaffold proteins. Recently, his lab has also been involved in the translation of these concepts into new therapies, including the development of new AAV gene therapy biologics for the prevention and treatment of heart failure and for neuroprotection in the eye.

Aharon Kapitulnik
Theodore and Sydney Rosenberg Professor of Applied Physics and Professor of Physics
BioAharon Kapitulnik is the Theodore and Sydney Rosenberg Professor in Applied Physics at the Departments of Applied Physics and Physics at Stanford University. His research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, while opportunistically, also apply his methods to tabletop experimental studies of fundamental phenomena in physics. His recent studies cover a broad spectrum of phenomena associated with the behavior of correlated and disordered electron systems, particularly in reduced dimensions, and the development of effective instrumentation to detect subtle signatures of physical phenomena.
Among other recognitions, his activities earned him the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1986-90), a Presidential Young Investigator Award (1987-92), a Sackler Scholar at Tel-Aviv University (2006), the Heike Kamerlingh Onnes Prize for Superconductivity Experiment (2009), a RTRA (Le Triangle de la Physique) Senior Chair (2010), and the Oliver Buckley Condensed Matter Prize of the American Physical Society (2015). Aharon Kapitulnik is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Kapitulnik holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Tel-Aviv University (1984). -
Katherine Kaplan
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Kaplan's research interests span four (often overlapping) domains: (1) pathophysiologic aspects of insomnia and hypersomnia in mood disorders, including mechanisms, correlates, and sequelae of these sleep disturbances; (2) behavioral interventions for sleep disturbances in adults and adolescents; (3) circadian and psychosocial factors impacting sleep in adolescence; and (4) machine learning approaches to big data.
