Cormac Maher, MD, FAANS, FAAP, FACS
Botha Chan Endowed Professor
BioDr. Maher is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with Stanford Health Care and is chief of neurosurgery at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. He is also the Botha Chan Endowed Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Maher specializes in treating children who have neurological disorders — conditions of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. In his adult practice, he offers particular expertise in treating Chiari malformation, which involves a portion of the brain pushing down into the spinal canal, and tethered spinal cord. Dr. Maher has served on many national organization committees for research and training in neurosurgery.
Dr. Maher has published more than 190 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, and Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics. He has also served on the editorial boards for publications and organizations including the Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group. He has performed ad hoc review for many other journals and grant review for organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).
Dr. Maher has delivered hundreds of presentations at symposiums and conferences for national and international audiences. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, AANS, and American College of Surgeons. -

Nazanin Mahinparvar
Postdoctoral Scholar, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Nazanin Mahinparvar is a physician-scientist whose work brings together translational research, medical education, and procedural innovation. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Iran and is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University.
As a faculty educator with the Stanford Anesthesia Summer Institute (SASI), She teaches skin anatomy, wound healing, local anesthesia, wound closure, and microsurgical skills through hands-on educational programs. She is also actively involved in global medical education and mentorship, supporting students and early-career trainees through research, procedural training, and career development.
Dr. Mahinparvar’s passion for pain research is deeply personal. Having experienced severe chronic pain during adolescence, she developed a lasting commitment to understanding pain mechanisms and improving the lives of patients through innovative, non-opioid therapies.
Beyond research, She has always been drawn to disciplines that combine creativity with precision. She enjoys watercolor painting, playing piano, nail art, LEGO model building, and other hands-on creative activities that require meticulous attention to detail. She believes dermatology uniquely integrates art, science, technology, communication, pathology, diagnosis, and procedural medicine, making it the specialty that best reflects both her professional interests and personal strengths. She aspires to build an academic career in dermatology as a physician-scientist, educator, and mentor dedicated to advancing patient care, and translational research. -
Sally Mahmoud-Werthmann
Clinical Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Mahmoud-Werthmann's research focuses on implementation science, health equity, and healthcare delivery innovation, with an emphasis on improving care for patients experiencing social and structural barriers to health. She is particularly interested in understanding how evidence-based interventions can be effectively implemented, adapted, and scaled within real-world healthcare settings to improve access, quality, and outcomes for vulnerable populations.
A central theme of her work is centering the experiences of patients and communities in the design of healthcare interventions. She has a strong interest in qualitative and mixed-methods research and values approaches that elevate patient perspectives, identify barriers to care, and inform the development of more responsive healthcare systems. Her current work includes qualitative research exploring telehealth access and utilization among unstably housed populations, with a particular focus on co-designing potential solutions alongside patients and community stakeholders.
Her research also includes evaluation of community health worker programs, implementation strategies to increase adoption of evidence-based addiction treatment, including emergency department naltrexone prescribing, and operational approaches to addressing health-related social needs within healthcare systems. More broadly, she is interested in developing and evaluating scalable models that improve care transitions, strengthen system navigation, and advance health equity across the continuum of care.
In addition to her health services and implementation research, Dr. Mahmoud-Werthmann is interested in advancing equity within academic medicine. Her work in this area focuses on understanding barriers to advancement for women in emergency medicine and exploring innovative models of mentorship, sponsorship, and professional development that promote equitable career advancement and leadership opportunities.
