Jeffrey Peng, MD

BioDr. Peng is a board-certified specialist in sports medicine and family medicine. He provides care for athletes of all ages and enjoys helping everyday patients achieve and sustain a healthy, active lifestyle. His expertise includes orthobiologics, such as platelet-rich plasma, and ultrasound-guided minimally invasive techniques to treat osteoarthritis, tendinopathies, and other musculoskeletal conditions.
Outside of work, Dr. Peng enjoys reading, exercising, cooking, spending time with his wife, and creating fun mischief with his daughter and son. He is also fluent in Mandarin. -

Michael Penn

BioMichael Penn, the Teresa Hihn Moore Professor of Religious Studies, is a specialist in the history of early Christianity with a particular focus on middle eastern Christians who wrote in the Aramaic dialect of Syriac.
Professor Penn’s first book, Kissing Christians: Ritual and Community in the Late Ancient Church, was published in 2005 by the University of Pennsylvania Press. In 2015 he published two books on Christian-Muslim relations: Envisioning Islam: Syriac Christians in the Early Muslim World (University of Pennsylvania Press) and When Christians First Met Muslims: A Source Book of the Earliest Syriac Writings on Islam (University of California Press). For these projects Professor Penn has received awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council for Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Humanities Center, the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, the British Academy, the American Philosophical Association, the American Academy of Religion, and the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning.
Professor Penn is currently working on an Andrew Mellon Foundation funded collaboration that uses recent advances in the computerized analysis of handwriting to help analyze ancient Aramaic manuscripts. In addition to this work in the digital humanities, Professor Penn has begun several related projects that focus on the history of Syriac Christianity and the manuscripts they produced.
Before joining Stanford, Professor Penn was on the faculty of Mount Holyoke College. He has also taught at Brandeis University, Haverford College, Bryn Mawr College, and Duke University. He has additional experience as a secondary school teacher, including six years as the director of forensics at Durham Academy High School, where he ran a nationally competitive policy debate team. Professor Penn has also held research positions at Apple Computers, the Weizmann Institute (Israel), the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital, and Ames Research Center, NASA.

Bissera Pentcheva

BioBissera Pentcheva's work focuses on Byzantium and the medieval Mediterranean, more specifically aesthetics, phenomenology, and acoustics. Her most recent book Hagia Sophia: Sound, Space and Spirit in Byzantium (Penn State University Press 2017) explores the interconnection among acoutsics, architecture, and liturgical rite. She has also edited, Aural Architecture in Byzantium: Music, Acoustics and Ritual (Ashgate, 2017). Pentcheva has published another two books with Pennsylvania State University Press: Icons and Power: The Mother of God in Byzantium, 2006 that won the John Nicholas Brown prize form the Medieval Academy of America in 2010 and The Sensual Icon: Space, Ritual, and the Senses in Byzantium, 2010. She has held a number of prestigious fellowships among them: J. S Guggenheim, American Academy of Rome, Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Mellon New Directions Fellowship for the study of Classical Arabic, Alexander von Humboldt (Germany), Onassis Foundation (Greece), Dumbarton Oaks, and Columbia University's Mellon Post-doctoral fellowship. Her work has been published at the Art Bulletin, Speculum, Gesta, and Res. Anthropology and Aesthetics, and Convivium.

BioAlex “Sandy” Pentland is HAI Center Fellow and faculty lead for digital society at Stanford HAI and Digital Economy Lab, He is Toshiba Professor at MIT, member of US National Academies, Advisor to Abu Dhabi Investment Authority Lab, and formerly advisory board member at UN Secretary General’s office, Google, ATT, Telefonica, and elsewhere. Spin-off companies and open source systems from his lab manage authentication of most digital transactions in the world, media for roughly 1B people in far east, and health resources for roughly 0.5B people in the indopacific. His current focus is on problems and opportunities in using AI to improve our social institutions.

Deanna Pepin

BioHey there! I was born in the small town of Selkirk, Manitoba, but lived most of my life in Edmonton, Alberta. I completed my Bachelor of Science at Kings University, focusing on biology and did undergrad research on Pink Pigmented Facultative Methylotrophs - bacteria that degrade petrochemicals. Following graduation, I became a Research Technician with Exciton Technologies Inc., a research and development company producing silver-based wound care products for treating infections. In 2016, I joined Dr. Benjamin Willing’s lab in Agriculture, Food, and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alberta and completed a Master of Science focusing on how certain husbandry changes impact the development of the gastrointestinal microbiota, Salmonella infection resistance, and immune response in broiler production. In 2024, I completed my PhD in the department of Microbiology & Immunology at UBC, working with Dr. Carolina Tropini to understand the impact of osmotic stress on the gut microbiome.

Mark E. Pepin, MD, MS, PhD

Fellow in Medicine - Med/Cardiovascular MedicineBioDr. Mark Pepin is a clinical fellow within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiovascular Research Institute at Stanford University Hospital. Born and homeschooled in rural South Carolina, he received a BS in chemical engineering at Clemson University, where he also competed on the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country and Track teams as a distance runner. He completed an MS in biomedical engineering at UC Davis, followed by an MD-PhD at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Before entering residency training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Pepin was awarded the Humboldt postdoctoral research fellowship to conduct research in Heidelberg, Germany where he studied myocardial epigenetics and metabolism in the context of cardiometabolic heart failure. He has received research funding through the NIH/NHLBI, German Cardiac Society (DGK), and German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK). As a physician-scientist, Dr. Pepin aims to identify and leverage the epigenetic basis of cardiovascular disease to reverse its inherited and acquired forms. In his free time, he enjoys carpentry, running, and exploring the outdoors with his wife and their four children.

Visiting Scholar, Precourt Institute for EnergyBioJan Pepper has more than 30 years of experience in the energy and utility industry, with a legacy of industry-leading innovations. Most recently, from 2016 to 2023, she was the founding Chief Executive Officer of Peninsula Clean Energy, the community choice energy program serving the unincorporated county and all 20 cities in San Mateo County, as well as the City of Los Banos. Under Jan’s leadership, Peninsula Clean Energy has one of the cleanest electricity portfolios in the industry, delivering 100% clean electricity, and at a lower cost than the incumbent utility. During Jan’s tenure, she advanced the forward-looking goal of delivering 100% renewable energy on a 24/7 basis at no additional cost.
Over the course of her career, Jan has founded four energy-related start-ups. She is a pioneer and innovator in industry. At APX, she developed and implemented the first use of renewable energy credits, which now serve as the standard currency for trading and tracking renewable power. At Clean Power Markets, her company designed and implemented the successful Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) program for the State of New Jersey.
In 2017, the U.S. EPA and the Center for Resource Solutions honored her as the Green Power Leader of the Year. Jan served eight years on the Los Altos City Council and was Mayor in 2015 and 2020. She served on the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District from 2013 to February 2017. Jan is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Precourt Institute for Energy in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and co-teaches a course on energy during the fall quarter. She has a BS in civil engineering and an MBA, both from Stanford University. She is the recipient of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability Distinguished Alumni Award for 2025. -
Jon-Paul Pepper, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsFacial paralysis is a debilitating condition that affects thousands of people. Despite excellent surgical technique, we are currently limited by the regenerative capacity of the body. The mission of our research is to identify new treatments that improve current facial paralysis treatments. We do this by exploring the regenerative cues that the body uses to restore tissue after nerve injury, in particular through pathways of neurogenesis and nerve repair in small mammals.

Charlotte Joy Darcia Pera

BioCharlotte Pera has worked for more than 30 years in clean energy, climate change, and philanthropy. In 2023 she was named one of the 50 most powerful women in U.S. philanthropy by Inside Philanthropy magazine. In July 2024, she became the first Executive Director of the Sustainability Accelerator at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. Previously, she served as Vice President and Deputy CEO at the Bezos Earth Fund, a philanthropic organization created by Jeff Bezos that is spending $10 billion this decade to address climate change and protect and restore nature. Before joining the Earth Fund, Charlotte served for nearly nine years as President & CEO of the ClimateWorks Foundation, a leading philanthropic organization that works globally to advance climate solutions through intelligence services, convening, and grantmaking. Earlier in her career, Charlotte advanced clean energy technology and policy in the U.S. and China at the Energy Foundation and at engineering consulting firm Acurex.
Charlotte serves on the advisory board of the 100X Impact Accelerator at the London School of Economics, the governing board of the International Council for Clean Transportation, and the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Philanthropy for Climate and Nature. She is a Senior Fellow at the Bezos Earth Fund and a Senior Fellow with the Mission Possible Partnership. She holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. -
Jack Percelay
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics
BioJack Percelay has a 25+ year career in pediatric hospital medicine, beginning before the term hospitalist was invented when he started as an "in-house pediatrician in 1991 at several Bay Area hospitals after a brief career as a civilian primary care pediatrician at local and international US military bases. He has spent the majority of his career in community hospitals where his practice has run the gamut from the general pediatric ward and emergency room, to the PICU and intensive care nurseries, delivery room, and specialized neurologic and neurosurgical units. His work has taken him from San Francisco to New York City with brief stints in Hawaii. In 2015 he moved to Seattle Children's Hospital where he was an Associate Division Chief of Hospital Medicine, and in 2018 returned to the Bay Area joining the Stanford faculty.
He served as the founding chair of the AAP Section on Hospital Medicine, and has also served as the Chair of the AAP Committee on Hospital Care. He served for seven years as the pediatric board member for the Society of Hospital Medicine and has been recognized as a Master of Hospital Medicine by SHM. Additionally, he was an inaugural board member of the American Board of Pediatrics Pediatric Hospital Medicine Subspecialty Board. Areas of interest include pediatric hospital medicine systems of care, patient and family-centered care, BRUEs, billing and coding, and hospitalist roles in the PICU. -
