Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAdolescents are dying from drug overdoses at unprecedented rates, largely secondary to fentanyl contamination in the drug supply. A Youth Overdose Prevention Toolkit for school-based health centers is needed to combat this trend. The toolkit should include key stakeholder-informed harm reduction approaches that focus on reducing injury or death from fentanyl and other opioids without exclusively recommending abstinence; this approach is evidence-based and critical to saving lives.

Julia D. Ransohoff

BioDr. Ransohoff received her B.A. from Harvard College in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology and completed her medical training at Stanford University, where she received her M.D., completed residency in internal medicine, and fellowship training in hematology and oncology as part of the American Board of Internal Medicine Physician Scientist Training Program.
Dr. Ransohoff is a physician-scientist dedicated to improving breast cancer treatments and outcomes through developing genomic methods to profile how tumors respond to treatment. Her research focuses on molecular approaches to understand the variable clinical responses of breast cancers to treatment at the genomic level by profiling molecular residual disease. Her current work involves exploring mechanisms of chemoresistance and immune evasion and identifying novel therapeutic targets. In related work, she also studies epidemiological risk factors for breast cancer mortality with a focus on the gut microbiome, oncofertility, and racial and ethnic differences in treatment response. Dr. Ransohoff's research has been supported by the ASCO Conquer Cancer Foundation, the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation, the Stanford Cancer Institute, ECOG-ACRIN, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
As an Instructor in the Division of Medical Oncology, Dr. Ransohoff is also a clinically active oncologist, treating patients with breast cancer. -
Adrit Rao

BioAdrit is passionate about research at the intersection of deep learning, healthcare, and mobile apps. For the past four years, he has been conducting digital health research at Stanford's Vascular Surgery division. He is also a member of the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign's Digital Health group and serves as a TA for Stanford's CS342 course.
Adrit has co-authored 16 peer-reviewed publications, including 13 as first author. He has presented at several prestigious international conferences, including MICCAI, ICCV, CVPR, and MWSCAS. He developed AutoABI, a patent-pending AI-enabled app for peripheral artery disease diagnosis. He developed the A4 deep learning pipeline for automated abdominal aortic aneurysm measurement which is open-sourced through Stanford AIMI's Comp2Comp. His research also focuses on improving the explainability of computer vision for medical image analysis. He is also a contributor to Stanford Spezi's digital health ecosystem. -

Asad Gul Rao

BioAs a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, I conduct outcomes research focused on improving the care of children with surgical disorders. My work integrates clinical epidemiology, large-scale healthcare databases, and population-level analyses to study pediatric surgical outcomes, healthcare disparities, and global disease burden.
My research interests include pediatric surgical infections, congenital anomalies, health services research, and evidence-based approaches to optimizing surgical care. I have experience working with multicenter clinical databases and international collaborative research initiatives, with a particular interest in translating real-world data into findings that help clinical practice and healthcare policy.
My long-term goal is to pursue a career in academic pediatric surgery, combining clinical practice with research to improve surgical outcomes and expand access to high-quality care for children worldwide. -

Mitesh Rao

BioDr. Mitesh B. Rao, MD, MHS is the Founder and CEO of OMNY, a venture-backed company revolutionizing how healthcare data is shared and valued. A Board-Certified Emergency Medicine Physician, Dr. Rao practices clinically as an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford. Most recently, he served as the Chief Patient Safety Officer for Stanford Healthcare where he led Patient Safety, Quality, and System Redesign for the Enterprise. Dr. Rao also served as Director of the Center for Advancing Patient Safety (CAPS), which focused on advancing the science and implementing new innovations in the fields of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement.
Previously, he was trained in leadership and research skills as a Fellow in the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. Subsequent to his time at Yale, he served as the Director of the Patient Safety Education Program at Northwestern Medicine. As a physician leader, he was helped implement systems-level improvements for quality and safety in institutions across the country and overseas that have had lasting effects on patient care provision. He has also led teams serving contracts with various governmental and non-profit agencies such as the Joint Commission Resources, CMS, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, Partners Health Care, and the American College of Surgeons in multiple campaigns and initiatives to improve Patient Safety on a national level.
Dr. Rao also served as the Head of Research and Integration for the health innovation program at Northwestern. In this role, he developed an expertise in improving care provision through innovative methodologies. He spearheaded efforts to integrate innovative technologies into the health system to improve patient care in a variety of settings, including telemedicine and mHealth initiatives. Working both with innovators and researchers across the various schools of the University as well as promising startups from around the country, Dr. Rao helped guide and refine the process for vetting and integrating pilot programs to test new technologies within the clinical venue. He also serves as a mentor to multiple healthcare-focused startups and accelerator groups across the country in order to help guide the development of implementation of innovative solutions that can sustainably impact patient care provision. -
Serena Rao
Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, Vice Provost and Dean of Research
BioSerena is the Senior Associate Dean in the Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR) at Stanford University. Reporting directly to the Dean, Serena supports Stanford's interdisciplinary labs, centers, institutes, and research-support offices. She guides their strategic activities, advises on operational challenges, and oversees all administrative activities. She also plays a key role in facilitating strategy development and leading the implementation of the university's research initiatives.
Serena’s extensive experience at Stanford includes over six years in the University Budget Office, where she was a vital member of the Provost’s Budget Group. In this capacity, she led complex analytical projects that informed strategic decisions for senior leadership and contributed significantly to the development of Stanford's annual consolidated budget. Prior to higher education, Serena managed city-wide infrastructure planning initiatives, annual capital budgets, and long-term debt forecasts for the Mayor's Office of Management and Budget in New York City.
Serena earned her Doctor of Education (Ed.D. ) degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Passionate about higher education and working in service to learning, Serena takes pride in getting things done effectively and creatively and excels in operating at both strategic and tactical levels. -
Yuan James Rao, MD
Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology (Radiation Therapy)
BioDr. Yuan James Rao is an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology, and Co-Director of Proton Therapy at Stanford University. In 2026, Dr. Rao co-led the team at Stanford that treated the world’s first pediatric and adult patients with ultra-compact upright proton therapy. Dr. Rao’s professional goal is to develop the world’s most advanced proton therapy program at Stanford University.
Proton therapy is a remarkable form of radiation treatment that uses heavy charged particles (protons) accelerated to approximately two-thirds the speed of light. The unique physics of protons allows the radiation to stop within a defined distance in the body, whereas standard x-ray therapy continues to deposit radiation after treating the tumor (known as “exit dose”). By reducing exit dose, protons may reduce normal tissue exposure to radiation, which is particularly beneficial for children and young adults with cancer, and patients requiring a second course of radiation. Dr. Rao currently coordinates the Stanford Radiation Oncology Department’s clinical, research, and education efforts related to proton therapy.
Dr. Rao’s clinical practice focuses on the care of patients with Head and Neck cancer, and Thoracic cancers. His goal is to provide the highest quality care to his patients, using the most appropriate technology. This may include proton therapy but also potentially other techniques such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation (SBRT), MR-guided radiotherapy, 3D conformal radiotherapy, or other technologies. Nearly all radiation technologies are available at Stanford University, and thus Dr. Rao and his Radiation Oncology colleagues are well positioned to choose the best treatment for every patient.
Dr. Rao trained at the prestigious Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis, and during residency was among the first physicians in the world to use the Mevion S250 proton therapy device and the ViewRay MRI-guided radiotherapy device. Dr. Rao has traveled to UCSF, MD Anderson, Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, Medical University of Vienna, and University Medical Center Utrecht to learn about various advanced radiotherapy techniques including MR-guided radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and proton therapy.
Prior to his role at Stanford, Dr. Rao was a physician at George Washington University in Washington, DC and held the positions of Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and Biomedical Engineering (by courtesy), and Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery (by courtesy). He was also the founding Director of Brachytherapy, and implemented programs for gyn, head and neck, prostate, and skin radiation implants using high dose rate (HDR) techniques. He was honored as a Washingtonian Top Doctor for each of the years that he practiced in DC, and Dr. Rao has treated members of Congress with radiotherapy (public information).
Dr. Rao is a prolific researcher with more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. He is an expert in proton therapy, head and neck cancer, thorax cancers, gyn cancers, GU cancers, brachytherapy, artificial intelligence, machine learning, image analysis and large database "big data." He is co-author of the ‘Endometrial Cancer’ chapter of the 8th edition of Perez and Brady’s Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology, the world’s most widely used reference textbook in the field. He regularly gives invited talks nationally and internationally. Dr. Rao has been grant funded by the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Rao is a respected educator and mentor, and has taught numerous engineering/physics students, medical students and residents; many of whom have gone on to become successful physicists, scientists, entrepreneurs, and physicians.
