Michael Wilcox
Senior Lecturer of Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity
BioMichael Wilcox joined the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology at Stanford University in 2001 as an Assistant Professor. His dissertation, entitled "The Pueblo Revolt of 1680: Communities of Resistance, Ethnic Conflict and Alliance Formation Among Upper Rio Grande Pueblos," articulates the social consequences of subordination, and explores the processes of boundary maintenance at both regional and communal levels. During his graduate studies at Harvard, he was very involved in strengthening the Harvard University Native American Program and in designing and teaching award-winning courses in Native American Studies.

Professor Wilcox's main research interests include Native American ethnohistory in the American Southwest; the history of Pueblo Peoples in New Mexico; Indigenous Archaeology; ethnic identity and conflict; DNA, race and cultural identity in archaeology and popular culture; and the political and historical relationships between Native Americans, anthropologists and archaeologists. -
Frederik Wild

BioI am a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University (Geldsetzer Lab) and the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (Germany).
In my research, I apply micro-econometric methods, specifically quasi-experimental designs, to study how policy interventions and external shocks shape health, human capital, and socioeconomic outcomes. I particularly enjoy investigating large-scale datasets as well as geospatial data.

Jeffrey P. Wilde

BioJeffrey P. Wilde received a Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics from Stanford University, with thesis work in the area of holographic data storage. In 1996, he co-founded Quinta Corporation to develop high-capacity optical disk drive technology; the company was acquired by Seagate Technology in 1997, and he subsequently served as the Director of Research West for Seagate. In 2000 he co-founded Capella Photonics, a manufacturer of wavelength switching products for the telecommunications industry. Capella was acquired by Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) in 2013.
Since 2005 he has provided optical design consulting services to numerous companies, as well as serving as a Research Consultant with Ginzton Laboratory at Stanford University, where he has participated in research on advanced fiber communication technologies, optical superresolution imaging, and helped establish a program on X-ray phase-contrast imaging for security applications. He has also served as an adjunct lecturer for EE236A (Modern Optics) and EE347 (Optical Methods in Engineering Science, aka Lens Design). Dr. Wilde has 31 journal publications, 39 issued US patents, and is a Senior Member of OSA. -
Sarah Wilker

BioI received my PhD in Classics from Stanford University in 2023. My research investigated the role of social networks in stabilizing, disrupting, and driving economic behaviors within ancient and premodern economies. My dissertation research combined archaeological and computational analyses to explore the relationship between community social relationships, wine production and drinking practices, and market exchange in the ancient Mediterranean world. Working as a computational archaeologist, my current scholarship combines expertise in archaeology, history, network science, sociology, and computer science to develop new models of socioeconomic interaction, and uses the ancient Mediterranean world as an optimal small data laboratory in which to test these models in the face of data scarcity. My broader academic research interests include Classical and Mediterranean archaeology, ancient economic history, economic sociology, social network analysis, and the computational study of the human past. I have worked on maritime and terrestrial archaeological projects across Italy, Turkey, Greece, and the United States, focusing specifically on ceramic materials. I was previously the Thomas F. Cooper Post-Doctoral Fellow and a Visiting Assistant Professor in Classics at Oberlin College, where I taught courses on Greek and Roman history, language, and culture, as well as ancient Greek and Latin language. I am excited to be back at Stanford as an Instructor for Continuing Studies.

BioI am a research scientist, astronomer and astrophysicist in the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University. My research focuses on how material spiralling into a supermassive black hole in the centre of a galaxy is able to release huge amounts of energy, powering some of the brightest objects we see in the Universe.
My research bridges the divide between observational and theoretical studies of black holes, using state of the art space telescopes, developing novel data analysis techniques and designing computer simulations of how light travels around black holes. I am using the X-rays that are emitted and measurements of how they reflect off of the material in its final moments before it falls in to create a 3D map of the extreme environment just outside the event horizon. I am interested in what happens to material and light just before it is lost into the black hole, how the corona that produces the radiation we see is powered, and how black holes are able to launch jets at almost the speed of light.
I am passionate about teaching and communicating science to the general public. I regularly give public lectures to a wide variety of audiences and am the founder and host of the Discover Our Universe public lecture series from Stanford's Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology. I have made a number of appearances on TV and radio, and am actively involved in a number of initiatives to involve the public in astronomy and physics. -

Jane Kathryn Willenbring

BioJane Willenbring joined Stanford as an Associate Professor in the summer of 2020. Jane is a geologist who solves problems related to the Earth surface. Her research is primarily done to understand the evolution of the Earth’s surface - especially how landscapes are affected by tectonics, climate change, and life. She and her research group use geochemical techniques, high-resolution topographic data, field observations, and, when possible, couple these data to landscape evolution numerical models and ice sheet models. The geochemical tools she uses and develops often include cosmogenic nuclide systems, which provide powerful, novel methods to constrain rates of erosion and mineral weathering. Jane has also started to organize citizen science campaigns and apply basic science principles to problems of human health with an ultimate broader impact goal of cleaning up urban areas and environments impacted by agriculture. She received her B.Sc. with honors from the North Dakota State University where she was a McNair Scholar and in the NDSU scholars program. She holds a Masters degree from Boston University. Her Ph.D. is in Earth Science from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada where she was a Killam Scholar. She was a Synthesis Postdoctoral Fellow through the National Center for Earth Surface Dynamics at the Saint Anthony Falls Lab at the University of Minnesota, and an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow and then subsequently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Helmholz GFZ Potsdam, Germany. Jane was previously an Associate Professor in the Geosciences Research Division and Thomas and Evelyn Page Chancellor's Endowed Faculty Fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego where she was the director of the Scripps Cosmogenic Isotope Laboratory (SCI-Lab). She was also a tenure-track professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She will be a Stanford University Gabilan Faculty Fellow in 2021-2023. She is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and was the inaugural recipient of the Marguerite T. Williams award from the American Geophysical Union.

Francis Robert Willett

BioFrank Willett is co-director of the Neural Prosthetics Translational Laboratory. Our group develops brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to restore movement and communication to people with neurological disorders. Recent contributions include handwriting and speech-based BCIs that set new records for communication speed and accuracy in people with paralysis. More broadly, we are interested in computational approaches to understanding brain function and recordings, with a focus on how the human brain represents movement and language.

I've played soccer since I was 3 years old, and have been fortunate enough to represent Mexico at the U-17 and U-20 levels. I’m the founder of the Among Warriors Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping underprivileged youth gain access to sports and mentorship with the aim of empowering them to operate at a level of excellence. I plan to major in business or medicine, and desire to continue building a life that encompasses purpose, performance, and impact.
