Sean M. Wu

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy lab seeks to identify mechanisms regulating cardiac lineage commitment during embryonic development and the biology of cardiac progenitor cells in development and disease. We believe that by understanding the transcriptional and epigenetic basis of cardiomyocyte growth and differentiation, we can identify the most effective ways to repair diseased adult hearts. We employ mouse and human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells as well as rodents as our in vivo models for investigation.

Sheng Xu

BioDr. Sheng Xu is a tenured professor and the inaugural Director of Emerging Technologies in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in Electrical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. He earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Peking University and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he pursued postdoctoral studies at the Materials Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He then spent 10 years on the faculty at UC San Diego before joining Stanford in 2025. His research group is interested in developing new materials and fabrication methods for soft electronics. His research has been presented to the United States Congress as a testimony to the importance and impact of NIH funding.

Terrance Yan

BioTerrance Yan is the Music Director & Conductor of the Stanford Medicine Orchestra and the Infinite Philharmonic, an ensemble he co-founded with his colleagues at Apple. He has also conducted orchestras across the United States, including the Arkansas Symphony, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and the Collegium Musicum of New York. His artistic endeavors span a wide range of collaborative and socially engaged projects, including Violins of Hope with luthier Avshi Weinstein, Immunity at Stanford with cellist Joshua Roman, the Reller Family Concert Series at Stanford Hospital, and the Anatomical Donor Memorial Service at Stanford Memorial Church.
Terrance has served as a conducting fellow at numerous festivals and masterclasses, where he studied under conductors including Donald Portnoy, Geoffrey Robson, John Farrer, Markand Thakar, Diane Wittry, and Julius Williams. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Conductors Guild and holds a Master of Music from San Francisco State University, an MBA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and an MS in Information Systems from Boston University. -
Dongrong Yang

Fellow in Radiation OncologyBioDongrong Yang, PhD, is a medical physics resident in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stanford University. His research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence and radiation oncology, with a particular focus on foundation-model agents, automated radiation therapy treatment planning, human–AI collaboration, clinical decision support, and personalized radiation therapy. Dr. Yang received his PhD and MS in Medical Physics from Duke University and his BS in Materials Physics from Nanjing University. He conducted undergraduate research at the University of Freiburg in Germany and completed a clinical and research exchange at National Cancer Centre Singapore and Duke-NUS Medical School. His honors include the AAPM/RSNA Doctoral Graduate Fellowship and two American Society for Radiation Oncology Best in Physics awards.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab’s mission is to develop therapies for regenerating human tissues lost due to diseases or aging, and to build tissue engineered 3D models for understanding disease progression and informing drug discovery. We invent biomaterials and engineering tools to elucidate and modulate biology, and also use biology to inform materials and engineering design. Our work is highly interdisciplinary, and is driven by unmet clinical needs or key gaps in biology.
