BioErin Wipff earned her Bachelors of Arts in Biology from University of California, Santa Cruz and Bachelors of Nursing from Johns Hopkins University. She received her Masters of Science in Nursing in Adult Primary Care with a minor in HIV from the University of California, San Francisco. She is board certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and a member of the California Association of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau. Her experience ranges from care of patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings with focuses in research, oncology, endocrinology, and neurosurgery. She currently supports the neurosurgical practice of Dr. Juan Fernandez-Miranda, Surgical Director of the Stanford Brain Tumor, Skull Base, and Pituitary Centers.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur goal is to define targets for cancer therapeutics by identifying alterations in signal transduction proteins. We first identified a naturally occurring mutant EGF receptor (EGFRvIII) and then delineated its unique signal transduction pathway. This work led to the identification of Gab1 followed by the discovery that JNK is constitutively active in tumors. We intiated using altered proteins as the target for vaccination, where an EGFRvIII based vaccine appears to be highly effective.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Wu's current research aims include integrating palliative care practices and communication training in surgical subspecialties and surgical education, investigating quality-of-life metrics and patient outcomes, and identifying and mitigating disparities in treatment patterns for surgical pathologies and utilization of palliative care resources.

BioLulu received her undergraduate degree in Biomedicine from the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia. In December 2016, Lulu was awarded a PhD degree in neuroscience from the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the University of Melbourne, where she identified a major under-appreciated role for subventricular zone-derived neural precursor cells in the process of myelin regeneration after demyelinating injury. Since late 2016, Lulu worked at Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute, Monash University as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Tobias Merson’s group, with a focus on developing mouse models to study the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying myelination mediated by distinct types of endogenous brain stem cells in health and disease. In particular, Lulu developed a novel mouse model of conditional OPC ablation, which could be adopted in different neurological contexts to further advance our knowledge and understanding of OPC biology. Lulu joined the Petritsch lab in late October 2022 as a research scientist, seeking to understand the role of OPCs in the development of glioma as tumour-initiating cells and how they are regulated by complex interactions with several cell types within the tumour microenvironment, using a combination of transgenic mouse models, advanced imaging techniques and single cell biology approaches.
