    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study the role of the lysosome in metabolic adaptation using subcellular omics approaches, functional genomics and innovative biochemical tools. We apply this knowledge to understand how lysosomal dysfunction leads to human diseases including neurodegeneration, cancer and metabolic syndrome.

    BioAlex Aiken is the Alcatel-Lucent Professor of Computer Science at Stanford. Alex received his Bachelors degree in Computer Science and Music from Bowling Green State University in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1988. Alex was a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center (1988-1993) and a Professor in the EECS department at UC Berkeley (1993-2003) before joining the Stanford faculty in 2003. His research interest is in areas related to programming languages.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur goal is to develop and clinically implement new technologies for high-precision and noninvasive intervention upon the nervous system. Every few millimeters of the brain is functionally distinct, and different parts of the brain may have counteracting responses to therapy. To better match our therapies to neuroscience, we develop techniques that allow intervention upon only the right part of the nervous system at the right time, using technologies like focused ultrasound and nanotechnology.

    BioProfessor Jacqueline Alderson is the Tech Director of the University of Western Australia Tech & Policy Lab and a Fulbright Senior Scholar and Visiting Professor at Stanford University. She has over 250 publications and reports in the fields of biomechanical modelling, wearable technologies, applied machine learning, injury prevention, and pro-public technology development. From 2012-23 she served on the Executive Councils of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sport, followed by the International Society of Biomechanics. Her current advisory board roles include the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Female Performance Health Initiative as well as the UK EPSRC Centre, CAMERA 2.0. Her 26 PhD graduates can be found in leading heath, academic, and high-performance and professional sport institutions around the world. These include the MLB and NFL in the United States; national sports institutes (Singapore, UK, AUS); and, in her home country, Swimming Australia, Tennis Australia, and the Australian Football League. As one of the founding architects of Australia’s Digital Athlete program and the ISBS Geoffrey Dyson awardee for 2024, Jacqueline is visiting Stanford Bioengineering to extend her research stream on the development of digital human twins, with a specific focus on the urgent need for technology regulation and governance in this domain. Her project is supported by the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (Inaugural Professional Alliance Award) and the Fulbright Commission.

    BioProf. Alonso is the founder and director of the Aerospace Design Laboratory (ADL) where he specializes in the development of high-fidelity computational design methodologies to enable the creation of realizable and efficient aerospace systems. Prof. Alonso’s research involves a large number of different manned and unmanned applications including transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic aircraft, helicopters, turbomachinery, and launch and re-entry vehicles. He is the author of over 200 technical publications on the topics of computational aircraft and spacecraft design, multi-disciplinary optimization, fundamental numerical methods, and high-performance parallel computing. Prof. Alonso is keenly interested in the development of an advanced curriculum for the training of future engineers and scientists and has participated actively in course-development activities in both the Aeronautics & Astronautics Department (particularly in the development of coursework for aircraft design, sustainable aviation, and UAS design and operation) and for the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME) at Stanford University. He was a member of the team that currently holds the world speed record for human powered vehicles over water. A student team led by Prof. Alonso also holds the altitude record for an unmanned electric vehicle under 5 lbs of mass.

    Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering

    BioIro Armeni is Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She is interested in interdisciplinary research between Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Visual Machine Perception. Iro focuses on developing quantitative and data-driven methods that learn from real-world visual data to generate, predict, and simulate new or renewed built environments that place the human in the center. Iro's goal is to create sustainable, inclusive, and adaptive built environments that can support our current and future physical and digital needs. As part of her research vision, she is particularly interested in creating spaces that blend from the 100% physical (real reality) to the 100% digital (virtual reality) and anything in between, with the use of Mixed Reality.


    Iro completed her PhD at Stanford University on August 2020, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, with a PhD minor at the Computer Science Department. Afterwards she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at ETH Zurich working at both the Computer Science and Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering Departments (2023). Prior to her PhD, she received an MSc in Computer Science (Ionian University-2013), an MEng in Architecture and Digital Design (University of Tokyo-2011), and a Diploma in Architectural Engineering (National Technical University of Athens-2009). She has also worked as an architect and consultant for both the private and public sector.

    Iro is the recipient of the ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Google PhD Fellowship, and the MEXT Scholarship.

    Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsManan Arya leads the Morphing Space Structures Laboratory. His research is on structures that can adapt their shape to respond to changing requirements. Examples include deployable structures for spacecraft that can stow in constrained volumes for launch and then unfold to larger sizes in space, terrestrial structures with variable geometry, and morphing robots. Key research thrusts include lightweight fiber-reinforced composite materials to enable innovative designs for flexible structures, and the algorithmic generation of the geometry of morphing structures – the arrangement of stiff and compliant elements – to enable novel folding mechanisms.

    He has published more than 20 journal and conference papers and has been awarded 5 US patents. Prior to joining Stanford, he was a Technologist at the Advanced Deployable Structures Laboratory at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, where he developed and tested breakthrough designs for space structures, including deployable reflectarrays, starshades, and solar arrays.

    BioItai Ashlagi is a Professor at the Management Science & Engineering Department.
    He is interested in game theory and the design and analysis of marketplaces. He is especially interested in marketplaces, in which matching is an essential activity. markets, for which he developed mechanisms using tools from operations/cs and economics. His work influenced the practice of Kidney exchange, for which he has become a Franz Edelman Laureate. Ashlagi received his PhD in operations research from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
    Before coming to Stanford he was an assistant professor of Operations Management at Sloan, MIT and prior to that a postdoctoral researcher at HBS. He is the recipient of the outstanding paper award in the ACM conference of Electronic Commerce 2009. His research is supported by the NSF including an NSF-CAREER award.
