Drawing on both pluripotent stem cell biology, hematopoiesis, and immunology, combined with novel high-content single-cell analysis (CyTOF – Mass Cytometry) and imagining (MIBI-Multiplexed Ion Beam Imaging) we are creating templates of ‘normal’ human cellular behavior to both discover novel regulatory events and cell populations as well as understand dysfunctional processes such as cancer.

Jade Benjamin-Chung

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research aims to improve population health by creating high quality evidence about what health interventions work in whom and where, when, and how to implement them. Most of our research is focused on environmentally-mediated infectious diseases, including malaria, diarrhea, soil-transmitted helminths, and influenza. Our focus is on improving the health of vulnerable populations from low-resource settings, both domestically and internationally. We use a variety of epidemiologic, computational, and statistical methods, including causal inference and machine learning methods.

Christopher Bennett

BioI am a board-certified emergency physician and researcher at Stanford, where I bridge clinical practice with health innovation. In addition to being faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine, I hold affiliations with the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI), the Center for AI in Medicine & Imaging (AIMI), and the Center for Digital Health (CDH).
My work leverages data-informed precision medicine with the goal of transforming healthcare delivery—especially for transmissible infectious diseases. As an NIH funded investigator, I lead a research group that designs solutions to improve patient outcomes and inform policy. I bring extensive experience from training at Duke, Harvard, and Stanford, and a proven track record of leadership from serving on the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Board of Directors, the SAEM Foundation Board of Trustees.
I am passionate about collaboration to pioneer digital health strategies that revolutionize care and drive tangible impact. -

On Leave from 04/01/2025BioThe research in the Bent laboratory is focused on understanding and controlling surface and interfacial chemistry and applying this knowledge to a range of problems in semiconductor processing, micro- and nano-electronics, nanotechnology, and sustainable and renewable energy. Much of the research aims to develop a molecular-level understanding in these systems, and hence the group uses of a variety of molecular probes. Systems currently under study in the group include functionalization of semiconductor surfaces, mechanisms and control of atomic layer deposition, molecular layer deposition, nanoscale materials for light absorption, interface engineering in photovoltaics, catalyst and electrocatalyst deposition.

A Stanford faculty member since 2005, Professor Berek is renowned for his many contributions to and expertise in gynecologic oncology, especially surgical innovation and techniques, and his research in immunology and immunotherapy. Through many laboratory and clinical investigations, he pioneered the use of regionally-administered immunotherapy in ovarian cancer patients. His early laboratory research focused on fundamental mechanisms of cancer immunology, elucidating growth regulatory pathways for cytokines and their receptors. His current research focuses on clinical trials of novel therapies and immunotherapies for ovarian cancer and collaborations on new diagnostics, screening techniques, and genetics.
An author and editor, Professor Berek has published more than 360 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the scientific literature, and numerous book chapters and monographs. His books, Berek & Hacker’s Gynecologic Oncology, now in its 7th edition, and Berek & Novak’s Gynecology, in its 17th edition, are leading texts in the field. He is the Series Editor for Operative Techniques in Gynecologic Surgery, for which five textbooks on various subspecialty topics in Obstetrics and Gynecology have been published. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Current Opinion in Obstetrics & Gynecology, and he is a former Editor-in-Chief of ASCO Connection, published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Professor Berek received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Theatre Arts, and a Master of Medical Sciences degree in biomedical sciences from Brown University. After earning his Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he completed an internship and residency at Harvard Medical School, Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Before moving to Stanford, he was on the faculty at the UCLA School of Medicine for more than two decades.
Professor Berek has received many honors and accolades. Dr. Berek is the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Honoree of the American Cancer Society for his many accomplishments in women’s cancer treatment and research. In 2022, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Gynecologic Cancer for his contributions to the field of gynecologic oncology.
In addition to his medical career, Professor Berek is an active documentary filmmaker—creating and directing films on a variety of medical topics that are highlighted by patient stories. In collaboration with the Under One Umbrella Committee and Stanford Medical Center Development, Professor Berek has led a highly successful fundraising program for the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center. Since 2009, these Under One Umbrella philanthropy efforts have generated substantial support for innovative research programs in women’s cancer via concerts headlined by celebrities, including Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Darlene Love, and Harry Connick Jr.

Jonathan Berger
Denning Family Provostial Professor
BioJonathan Berger is the Denning Family Provostial Professor in Music at Stanford University, where he teaches composition, music theory, and cognition, and directs the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).
Jonathan is a 2017 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2016 winner of the Rome Prize.
He was the founding co-director of the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SICA, now the Stanford Arts Institute) and founding director of Yale University’s Center for Studies in Music Technology
Described as “gripping” by both the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, “poignant”, “richly evocative” (San Francisco Chronicle), “taut, and hauntingly beautiful” (NY Times), Jonathan Berger’s recent works deal with both consciousness and conscience. His monodrama, My Lai, toured internationally. The Kronos Quartet's recording was released by Smithsonian/Folkways. His opera, The Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist was performed at Lincoln Center in July 2024. Other recent premiers include Hajar Yasini for narrator, string quartet and video (premiered by the Kronos Quartet), and Mekong:Soul (co-composed with Van Anh Vo) which was performed at the Kennedy Center and in Houston.
Thrice commissioned by The National Endowment for the Arts, Berger’a recent commissions include The Mellon and Rockefeller Foundations, Chamber Music Society, Lincoln Center, and Chamber Music America.
In addition to composition, Berger is an active researcher with over 80 publications in a wide range of fields relating to music, science and technology and has held research grants from DARPA, the Wallenberg Foundation, The National Academy of Sciences, the Keck Foundation, and others.
Berger is the PI of a major grant from the Templeton Religion Trust to study how music and architecture interact to create a sense of awe. -
Miles Berger
Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine (MSD)
BioI am a neuroanesthesiologist and translational human neuroscientist. Clinically, I care for patients undergoing brain and spine surgery, and have an interest in optimizing anesthesia care (and postoperative cognitive outcomes) for older surgical patients.
My research team studies mechanisms of perioperative neurocognitive disorders (such as delirium) in older adults, the relationship between anesthetic brain sensitivity (as measured by EEG) and preclinical/prodromal age-related changes in brain structure and function, and mechanisms by which the APOE4 allele leads to increased Alzheimer's Disease risk and neurocognitive decline. Together with collaborators, we use a transdisciplinary approach combining molecular/cellular assays (including ELISAs, proteomics, metabolomics, and flow cytometry) on pre- and post-operative CSF and plasma samples from older surgical surgical patients, functional and structural MRI neuroimaging, pre- and intra-operative EEG recordings, genetics (and epigenetics), and pre and postoperative delirium screening and cognitive testing. Overall, our hope is that the combination of these different methods will allow us to obtain insights into the mechanisms of perioperative neurocognitive disorders that could not be obtained by any single method alone.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research is focused on the diagnosis, discovery and delineation of rare genetic conditions with a focus on neurodevelopmental disorders. This work includes the application of novel computational methods and multi-omics profiling (whole genome sequencing, long-read DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, methylomics, metabolomics). I additionally participate in an interdisciplinary project to develop induced pluripotent stem cell and assembloid models of genetic neurodevelopmental disorders.

BioMichael Bernstein is a Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, where he is a Bass University Fellow and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. A nationally bestselling author, Michael focuses on designing social, societal, and interactive technologies. This research has been reported in venues such as The New York Times, TED AI, and MIT Technology Review, and Michael himself has been recognized with an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship and the Computer History Museum's Tech for Humanity Prize. Michael holds a bachelor's degree in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University, as well as a master's degree and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT.

Mark Francis Berry, MD
Mylavarapu Rogers Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Berry joined the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Stanford in August 2014. He came to Stanford from Duke University, where he had most recently served as Associate Professor. He received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine after receiving bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Duke University Medical Center after performing a residency in General Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His Cardiothoracic Surgical training included a year dedicated to Minimally Invasive General Thoracic Surgery, a period that also included an American Association for Thoracic Surgery sponsored Traveling Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Berry practices all aspects of thoracic surgery, including procedures for benign and malignant conditions of the lung, esophagus, and mediastinum. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques, and has extensive experience in treating thoracic surgical conditions using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical (VATS), laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic, and bronchoscopic approaches. He serves as the co-Director of the Stanford Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Center (SMITS), and has both directed and taught in several minimally invasive thoracic surgery courses.
Dr. Berry also has a Masters of Health Sciences in Clinical Research from Duke University. His clinical research activities mirror his clinical interests and activities in optimizing short-term and long-term outcomes of patients with thoracic surgical conditions. He has more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, most of which are related to both the use of minimally invasive thoracic surgical techniques as well as evaluating outcomes after treatment of thoracic malignancies. His clinical practice and his research both focus on choosing the most appropriate treatment and approach for patients based on the individual characteristics of the patient and their disease process. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Bertaina is a highly experienced clinician and will play a key role in supporting Section Chief Dr. Rajni Agarwal and Clinical Staff in the Stem Cell Transplant Unit at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. She will also continue her research on immune recovery and miRNA, understanding the mechanisms underlying immune reconstitution, Graft-versus-Host Disease (GvHD), and leukemia relapse after allogeneic HSCT in pediatric patients affected by hematological malignant and non-malignant disorders.

BioCarolyn Bertozzi is the Baker Family Director of Sarafan ChEM-H, Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences and Professor, by courtesy, of Chemical and Systems Biology and of Radiology at Stanford University, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She completed her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Harvard University in 1988 and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1993. After completing postdoctoral work at UCSF in the field of cellular immunology, she joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1996. In June 2015, she joined the faculty at Stanford University and became the co-director and Institute Scholar at Sarafan ChEM-H.
Prof. Bertozzi's research focuses on fundamental studies of disease-associated glycobiology and the development of new therapeutic modalities that target these pathways. Her inventions include bioorthogonal chemistries for in vivo imaging and bioconjugation, work for which she received the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. As well, her lab has developed next generation antibody-drug conjugates, lysosome-targeting chimeras (LYTACs), antibody-enzyme conjugates and antibody-lectin chimeras. Several of these new therapeutic modalities have been translated into clinical candidates for treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases.
In addition to the Nobel Prize, Prof. Bertozzi has been recognized with many honors and awards for both her research and teaching accomplishments. For example, she is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the National Inventors Academy and the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and she is a Foreign Fellow of the Royal Society. In addition, Prof. Bertozzi received the Priestley Medal of the American Chemical Society, the Welch Award, the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, the Heineken Prize, Lemelson-MIT award for inventors, and a MacArthur "Genius Award". -
Vivek Bhalla, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Bhalla's two primary research interests are in the role of the kidney in diabetes and hypertension. We use molecular, biochemical, and transgenic approaches to study: (1) mechanisms diabetic kidney disease disease including the role of the endothelium to regulate inflammation and kidney injury; and (2) regulation of tubular transport of glucose, sodium, and potassium. These latter studies have treatment implications in diabetes, kidney disease, and hypertension.
