Altay Atli

BioDr. Altay Atlı is co-teaching the “Exploring Contemporary Turkey” course at Bing Overseas Studies program hosted by Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey. He is a lecturer at the Graduate School of Business and Department of International Relations of Koç University, as well as the Asian Studies program of Boğaziçi University, and the founding director of “Atlı Global”, an Istanbul-based boutique advisory firm providing consulting and executive training services on global affairs and international business. His areas of academic interest include international political economy, economic diplomacy, business-government relations and the political economy of Turkish foreign policy. A graduate of the German High School (Deutsche Schule) in Istanbul, he completed a B.A. degree in Economics at Boğaziçi University, an M.A. degree in International Business at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, and obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science and International Relations of Boğaziçi University. Dr. Atlı was affiliated with Boğaziçi University’s Asian Studies Center as well as Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center, and he also worked as research coordinator at Turkey’s Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK). Dr. Atlı was chosen a "Global Emerging Voices Fellow” by Torino World Affairs Institute, in partnership with the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Australian National University, and Stiftung Mercator; and he was recognized as a “Young Academics Fellow” by the Global Relations Forum. He is an expert member at the China Network of Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) and he regularly appears on programs in channels like Bloomberg, BBC World, Turkish Radio Television (TRT), Ekotürk, TvNet, CGTN, NHK Japan, Channel News Asia, China Radio International, commenting on developments in global affairs and Turkey’s international relations. Dr. Atlı is also involved in sports management and he is currently a board member at the Turkish Handball Federation.

Graduate Students in COLLEGE, Stanford Introductory Studies OperationsBioI’m very interested in how people generate good ideas, both in writing and speaking. In the classroom, my goal is to show you that good ideas don’t just appear in our heads, as if thanks to some innate power. Rather, good ideas come from methodical thinking. Good ideas, in fact, can come from thinking with rhetorical figures. The next time you’re struggling to explain something to a friend, use a simile. What is something your friend already knows? Try making a comparison with that familiar thing. Rhetorical figures are not just stylish dress for sentences. They’re useful, like a flashlight when the power goes out.
Trained in an English department, I am a rhetorician working at the intersections of stylistics and argumentation. Powered by humanistic methods, my scholarship focuses on invention, especially updating the art of topical invention. In my current book, I offer a theory of rhetorical figures defined as epitomes of the dialectical topics, an old tradition of informal logic. My theory of the figures challenges our notion of creativity, which is currently too reliant on individualistic achievement.
A revamped theory of the figures powers my criticism. As part of my research program, I work on literary and rhetorical traditions in US American and Latinx contexts. My book presents a case study along these lines: I explain the informal logic of some Latinx nostalgia between the World Wars. Before coming to COLLEGE, I taught courses in literary studies and in liberal-arts general education. Before that, I taught high school in Chicago and New York City. -
Francesco Bagnardi

BioFrancesco Bagnardi is postdoctoral research fellow at Scuola Normale Superiore. He holds a PhD in Social and Political Science from the European University Institute in Florence. His work intersects labour sociology, international political economy, and social movements. His research interests include labour movements and employment relations, economic and labour geographies, and global production networks. He currently works on the international political economy and mobilizations of intellectual property rights regimes and health.
