Haifa Badi Uz Zaman
Program Manager for AI and Society, Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)
BioHaifa Badi-Uz-Zaman is a Program Manager at Stanford HAI where she leads the institute’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) portfolio. This involves producing research, education and convenings to support civil society organizations with leveraging AI for more equitable outcomes. Haifa is also leading the institute's emerging education work with policy and civil society stakeholders in Global South countries to help strengthen the AI ecosystem per global development goals. Haifa has a master's degree in International Education Policy from Harvard University, which she attended as the Aga Khan Foundation's International Scholar from Pakistan. She has previously managed research and education programs at the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, Citizen Schools California, and the Aga Khan Development Network in Kenya. Haifa is a native Pashto speaker from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, and was raised in the United Arab Emirates.

Marley Bauce
Associate Director, Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials
BioMarley Bauce joined Stanford in January 2023 as the Associate Director or the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (GLAM), one of 15 independent and transdisciplinary labs within the Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research. In this role, he provides managerial, financial, facilities, strategic planning, and research administrative support for GLAM’s faculty, trainees, and administrative staff, while optimizing the vibrancy, interconnectivity, and safety of materials research across the university.
Prior to joining Stanford, Marley spent a decade at Columbia University, first as the Director of Research Development within the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research, then most recently as the inaugural Associate Dean for Research at the Climate School, where he created and led an 11-person Office of Research spanning compliance, grants administration, federal affairs, and strategic initiatives. Over his tenure at Columbia, he directly supported and wrote “center grant” proposals awarded $100M+ in federal funding.
Marley has an MPA in Management & Finance from Columbia University, an MA in Environmental Studies from NYU, and a BA in Philosophy from Hampshire College. -
Achintya K. Bhowmik, PhD
Adjunct Professor, OHNS/Otology & Neurotology Division
BioDr. Achin Bhowmik serves on the faculty of Stanford University as an adjunct professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, where he advises research and lectures in the areas of sensory augmentation, computational perception, cognitive neuroscience, and intelligent systems. He is also an affiliate faculty member of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and Human Performance Alliance, and a mentor for the Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program.
Dr. Bhowmik is the chief technology officer and executive vice president of engineering at Starkey Hearing Technologies, a privately-held medical devices company with over 5,000 employees and operations in over 100 countries worldwide. In this role, he is responsible for the company’s technology strategy, research and development, engineering and program management departments, and leading the drive to transform hearing aids into multifunction wearable health and communication devices with advanced sensors and artificial intelligence.
Previously, Dr. Bhowmik was the vice president and general manager of the Perceptual Computing Group at Intel Corporation, where he was responsible for the R&D, engineering, operations, and businesses in the areas of 3D sensing and interactive computing, computer vision and artificial intelligence, autonomous robots and drones, and immersive virtual and merged reality devices.
Dr. Bhowmik is a member of the Forbes Technology Council, board of trustees for the National Captioning Institute, board of directors for Mojo Vision and OpenCV, board of advisors for the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley, and industry advisory board for the Institute for Engineering in Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He is also on the board of advisors for several technology startup companies.
He has also held adjunct and guest professor positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Liquid Crystal Institute of the Kent State University, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. He received his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, PhD from Auburn University, and attended the Executive Program at Stanford University. He has authored over 200 publications, including two books and over 80 granted patents.
His awards and honors include Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), President and Fellow of the Society for Information Display (SID), Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA), Artificial Intelligence Excellence award by the Business Intelligence Group, Gold Globee award for “Most Innovative Person of the Year in Healthcare”, Top 25 Healthcare Technology CTOs by the Healthcare Technology Report, Notable Leaders in Healthcare by Twin Cities Business, Healthcare Heroes award by the Business Journals, Industrial Distinguished Leader award from the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association, TIME’s Best Inventions, and the Red Dot Design award.

Alina Bykova

Research Assistant, FSI - CISACBioAlina is a PhD candidate in Russian and East European History. Her research interests include Arctic and Soviet environmental history with a focus on energy and industry. Alina is writing her dissertation on the history of energy and extraction on Svalbard, Norway. She also works as a research associate and editor-in-chief at The Arctic Institute, an interdisciplinary think tank.
Alina earned her masters in European and Russian Affairs from the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto in 2019. Her masters thesis was about the rise and fall of Soviet mining settlements on Svalbard. Prior to her work in academia, she completed a Bachelor of Journalism at Ryerson University and worked as a breaking news reporter at the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper. -

Yan Chang

Other Tech - Graduate, FSIBioYan Chang is a Ph.D. student in modern and contemporary East Asian literatures, cultures, and media. His research interests currently center on trans-linguality, trans-culture, and trans-nationality in post-Cold War Japanophone literature. His academic concerns also include visuality and modernity of modern Japanese literature in the Taisho period as well as Shanghai urbanization and the concomitant media representations in the 1990s. Before joining Stanford, Yan received a joint B.A. in Economics and Japanese from Shanghai International Studies University, an M.A. in Japanese Culture Studies from Nagoya University, and an M.A. in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities.
