Jijumon A. S.
Postdoctoral Scholar, Bioengineering
BioI am Jijumon, a biologist, mostly trained in molecular biology, cell biology, and protein biochemistry. Currently, I am a postdoctoral researcher in Manu Prakash's lab at Stanford University. I did my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research-Kolkata (IISER-K). After that, I moved to Europe and worked in the BRC, Hungarian Academy of Sciences as an ITC fellow. There I did a one-year training course on contemporary experimental biology and state-of-the-art techniques, together with a project in sarcomeric actin regulation. In 2016, I moved to Paris and started my Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Marie Curie fellow) in Carsten Janke's lab at Institut Curie, University of Paris-Saclay. My broader research interests are cytoskeleton, tool development, and proteomics. I use both biochemical and bioengineering tools to tackle my project. Beyond my academic pursuits, I enjoy activities such as reading, photography, shuttle badminton, and cycling.

Alaa Eldin Abdelaal
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioAlaa Eldin Abdelaal is a postdoctoral scholar at the Collaborative Haptics and Robotics in Medicine Lab at Stanford University, working with Prof. Allison Okamura and Prof. Jeannette Bohg. He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in December 2022. He was also a visiting graduate scholar at the Computational Interaction and Robotics Lab at Johns Hopkins University. During his PhD, he was co-advised by Prof. Tim Salcudean and Prof. Gregory Hager. He holds a M.Sc. in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University and a B.Sc. in Computer and Systems Engineering from Mansoura University in Egypt. His research interests are at the intersection of automation and human-robot interaction for human skill augmentation and decision support with application to surgical robotics. His research has been recognized with the Best Bench-to-Bedside Paper Award at the International Conference on Information Processing in Computer-Assisted Interventions (IPCAI) 2019. His research has been funded by a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, Intuitive Surgical Inc., and the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) at Stanford University.

Monther Abu-Remaileh
Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering and of Genetics
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study the role of the lysosome in metabolic adaptation using subcellular omics approaches, functional genomics and innovative biochemical tools. We apply this knowledge to understand how lysosomal dysfunction leads to human diseases including neurodegeneration, cancer and metabolic syndrome.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am an Assistant Professor jointly appointed to both the Computer Science and the Electrical Engineering Departments at Stanford University. My research focuses on new techniques and tools, specifically new programming languages, compilers, and runtime systems, that enable end-users to more easily develop computations that exploit the potential of emerging computing platforms that exhibit analog behaviors.

BioPhil is an Electrical Engineering PhD student conducting inter-disciplinary medical imaging research in the Radiological Sciences Laboratory in the Stanford Medicine Department of Radiology. His research interests include MR methods for metabolic imaging, particularly Deuterium Metabolic Imaging (DMI), and Deep Learning methods for solving inverse problems in limited data regimes with applications to MRI.

Devan is leveraging multiple sources of data within the state of California and nationwide to develop a holistic Energy Poverty Index to evaluate and guide policy. Devan's research addresses disparities in racial equity by helping to identify communities and schools that are most vulnerable and at-risk based on socio-economic, health, and environmental factors.

Stanford Student Employee, Vice Provost for Graduate EducationBioI am passionate about working at the interface of medicine and engineering to develop novel technologies that enable and encourage humans to live healthier lives. During my time at Stanford, I have built and led collaborations between engineers and clinicians, and have led research design, execution, and analysis for the development of multiple mobile health technologies. Currently, I am developing and deploying a high-resolution, reproducible, and accessible (to clinicians and patients) screening method for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) using a smartphone which can identify individuals at risk for DPN prior to overt clinical manifestation and at a potentially reversible stage. Previously, I developed methods of controlling wearable robotic devices (exoskeletons) to enhance balance ability in older adults.

BioAlex Aiken is the Alcatel-Lucent Professor of Computer Science at Stanford. Alex received his Bachelors degree in Computer Science and Music from Bowling Green State University in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1988. Alex was a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center (1988-1993) and a Professor in the EECS department at UC Berkeley (1993-2003) before joining the Stanford faculty in 2003. His research interest is in areas related to programming languages.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur goal is to develop and clinically implement new technologies for high-precision and noninvasive intervention upon the nervous system. Every few millimeters of the brain is functionally distinct, and different parts of the brain may have counteracting responses to therapy. To better match our therapies to neuroscience, we develop techniques that allow intervention upon only the right part of the nervous system at the right time, using technologies like focused ultrasound and nanotechnology.
