Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI research theoretical and computational methods to model, design, and control energy systems. These methods include computational fluid dynamics, uncertainty quantification, and high performance computing. Energy systems include wind turbines, the electricity grid, vehicles, and carbon sequestration systems. Currently, I am researching hybrid RANS-LES methods for wind farm modeling in the Uncertainty Quantification lab in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

BioHello! I’m a fourth year PhD candidate at ICME where I’m lucky to be advised by Johan Ugander, and grateful to be a Knight-Hennessy Scholar and NSF Graduate Research Fellow. I received my BS in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the Colorado School of Mines in May 2017 and my MS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder in August 2018. After receiving my MS I was a visiting researcher in the Stanford Autonomous Systems Lab, a Safeway cake decorator, and the owner and baker of Bell’s Bakery.

Ryan Michael Aronson

BioI am a fifth year PhD student in the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME). I am mainly interested in developing numerical methods with applications to computational mechanics and fluid dynamics. I am particularly interested in high-order, structure-preserving, finite element, and isogeometric methods. Prior to coming to Stanford, I earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, where I worked with Professor John Evans on residual-based variational multiscale turbulence modeling, isogeometric, structure-preserving collocation methods, and stabilized isogeometric collocation methods. Currently I work with Professor Hamdi Tchelepi on stabilized methods for compositional geomechanics problems. I have also had the pleasure of working industry internships with Meta Reality Labs, TotalEnergies, and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

BioMy academic background is in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Analysis, and Continuum Mechanics with an M.S. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Penn State University. I am becoming more and more intrigued by data analytics & applying machine learning techniques to social sciences and networks.
Outside of academia, my interests include consuming music at all times (digitally and at live shows), competing on various Ultimate Frisbee teams (Club and National levels), cooking, and generally exploring the surrounding area. -

Laura Lyman

BioHello! I am a PhD candidate at the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME). I am proud to be advised by Professor Gianluca Iaccarino.
Some of my research interests include stochastic Galerkin methods, uncertainty quantification, polynomial chaos, applied partial differential equations, and Monte Carlo methods — though often, the academic boundaries and specific titles will overlap. Prior to graduate school, I attended Reed College as a mathematics major and worked as a software developer in Portland, OR. In 2018, I was a recipient of the Stanford Centennial Teaching Award. I am also a Stanford EDGE Fellow and was awarded the Thomas V. Jones Fellowship Fund.

BioI am a second year PhD student in ICME (the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering). Prior to Stanford, I was working as a technical analyst at the RAND Corporation where I spent most of my time designing microsimulations and other models to investigate topics in healthcare, education, disaster relief, and international relations.
My research interests fall broadly into the intersection of data and modeling. Past research projects have ranged from computational models of the heart to inverse modeling to predict satellite performance. At Stanford, I am exploring topics including uncertainty quantification, adaptive sampling, graph-informed neural networks, and geophysical modeling. -

Adrien Specht

BioAdrien Specht is a master’s student at both ENS Paris-Saclay and Stanford University. He majored in electrical, computational, and mathematical engineering with the ambition to advance Sleep Sciences. In France, he was one of the sleep pioneers working with the start-up Dreem on a new deep learning strategy to conduct EEG spectral analysis. Now in California, he is assisting Dr. Mignot with data-oriented research such as studying sleep depth and circadian rhythm with machine learning and proteomics. To him, the best moment of the day is after lunch with a coffee, a nice sunbath, and enjoyable sleep talks with colleagues.
