Rui Pei
Postdoctoral Scholar, Psychology
BioRui (/ˈreɪ/) received her B.Sc. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Brown University, and her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. She is interested in understanding how adolescents and young adults make social decisions in the context of psychological and neural development. Her research focuses on social risk taking, or risk taking behaviors that bring social consequences. Some of the questions that her research tries to answer include: what motivates people to take social risks, and how does social risk taking contribute to adolescent health and well-being?

Kate Petrova

BioKate Petrova is a PhD student at the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. In her research, Kate applies the tools of computational cognitive science to answer fundamental questions in affective science. She is particularly interested in constructing formal models of emotions and their roles in decision-making. In her dissertation, Kate is using a combination of computational modeling, qualitative methods, eye-tracking, and behavioral experiments to understand how people learn from regret. Kate earned her A.B. in Psychology from Bryn Mawr College and spent several years working on the Harvard Study of Adult Development before joining SPL.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab uses the tools of cognitive neuroscience to understand how decision making, executive control, and learning and memory are implemented in the human brain. We also develop neuroinformatics tools and resources to help researchers make better sense of data.

David Preece

BioDavid A. Preece, PhD, is a Fulbright Scholar affiliated with the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. His main research and practice interests are in assessing, conceptualising, and treating emotional disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, loneliness). Much of his research focuses on the key role that emotional awareness (alexithymia) and emotion regulation difficulties play in a variety of mental health issues, and how this understanding can be harnessed to design and improve treatment approaches.

Nilam Ram
Professor of Communication and of Psychology
BioNilam Ram studies the dynamic interplay of psychological and media processes and how they change from moment-to-moment and across the life span.
Nilam’s research grows out of a history of studying change. After completing his undergraduate study of economics, he worked as a currency trader, frantically tracking and trying to predict the movement of world markets as they jerked up, down and sideways. Later, he moved on to the study of human movement, kinesiology, and eventually psychological processes - with a specialization in longitudinal research methodology. Generally, Nilam studies how short-term changes (e.g., processes such as learning, information processing, emotion regulation, etc.) develop across the life span, and how longitudinal study designs contribute to generation of new knowledge. Current projects include examinations of age-related change in children’s self- and emotion-regulation; patterns in minute-to-minute and day-to-day progression of adolescents’ and adults’ emotions; and change in contextual influences on well-being during old age. He is developing a variety of study paradigms that use recent developments in data science and the intensive data streams arriving from social media, mobile sensors, and smartphones to study change at multiple time scales. -
Renee Rittler

Current Role at StanfordI am the Administrative Services Manager in the Department of Psychology within the School of Humanities and Sciences. I manage the Faculty Administrative Associates who support the faculty of our department which offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in Psychology, and conducts research in the areas of affective science, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and social psychology. In addition to being the Administrative Services Manager, I also provide administrative support to Professors Grill-Spector, Wine, Fernald, McClelland, Gerstenberg, Goodman, Starck, Ellis and Gwilliams their students, and research groups. I am involved with the grant and IRB management for the research protocols of my faculty. I also provide website administration for our department.

Shawn Schwartz

BioShawn is a Ph.D. candidate in Cognitive Neuroscience working with Anthony Wagner in the Department of Psychology. He leverages neuroimaging (fMRI and scalp EEG) and real-time biofeedback with pupillometry to investigate the neural mechanisms driving the relationship between moment-to-moment fluctuations in preparatory attention and episodic remembering in cognitively healthy young and older adults.

We try to figure out how our brains let us go so efficiently from sensation (e.g., speech, reading) to meaning, and we do this using a combination of neuroimaging, computer modeling, and behavioral experiments. Peiyang Song

BioPeiyang Song is a rising senior studying Computer Science at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), advised by Prof. Steven Low, with a minor in Robotics advised by Prof. Günter Niemeyer. He is a researcher in Berkeley AI Research (BAIR) Lab, advised by Prof. Dawn Song and Dr. Jingxuan He. He also works in Stanford AI Lab (SAIL), advised by Prof. Noah Goodman and Dr. Gabriel Poesia in the Computation & Cognition Lab (CoCoLab). His current research interest is mainly in LLM reasoning, especially neuro-symbolic AI for formal math and verifiable code generation. In the past, he also published on neuro-symbolic methods for energy-efficient ML systems and neural machine translation.
