Stephen Haber

BioStephen Haber is the A.A. and Jeanne Welch Milligan Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University, the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. In addition, he is a professor of political science, professor of history, and professor of economics (by courtesy).
Haber has spent his career investigating why the world distribution of income so uneven. His papers have been published in economics, history, political science, and law journals.
He is the author of five books and the editor of six more. Haber’s most recent books include Fragile by Design with Charles Calomiris (Princeton University Press), which examines how governments and industry incumbents often craft banking regulatory policies in ways that stifle competition and increase systemic risk. The Battle Over Patents (Oxford University Press), a volume edited with Naomi Lamoreaux, documents the development of US-style patent systems and the political fights that have shaped them.
His latest project focuses on a long-standing puzzle in the social sciences: why are prosperous democracies not randomly distributed across the planet, but rather, are geographically clustered? Haber and his coauthors answer this question by using geospatial tools to simulate the ecological conditions that shaped pre-industrial food production and trade. They then employ machine learning methods to elucidate the relationship between ecological conditions and the levels of economic development that emerged across the globe over the past three centuries.
Haber holds a Ph.D. in history from UCLA and has been on the Stanford faculty since 1987.
From 1995 to 1998, he served as associate dean for the social sciences and director of Graduate Studies of Stanford’s School of Humanities and Sciences. He is among Stanford’s most distinguished teachers, having been awarded every teaching prize Stanford has to offer. -
Heather Hadlock
Associate Professor of Music
BioHeather Hadlock studies 18th- and 19th-century French and Italian opera, with a focus on changing norms for representing masculinity in opera on nineteenth century stages and in contemporary productions of classic operas. Her research repertoire encompasses Italian bel canto opera, Berlioz, Offenbach, operatic masculinities, opera in the age of its digital mediation, and divas and technology. She approaches operatic voices and performance through feminist theories of difference, vocality, and embodiment; gender and sexuality studies; and dynamics of adaptation between opera, literature, and video. She has directed Stanford's interdisciplinary Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and served on the Phiip Brett Award committee and board of the AMS LGBTQ Study Group. She serves on the editorial board of the journal Nineteenth-Century Music.

Robert Harrison
Rosina Pierotti Professor of Italian Literature, Emeritus
BioProfessor Harrison received his doctorate in Romance Studies from Cornell University in 1984, with a dissertation on Dante's Vita Nuova. In 1985 he accepted a visiting assistant professorship in the Department of French and Italian at Stanford. In 1986 he joined the faculty as an assistant professor. He was granted tenure in 1992 and was promoted to full professor in 1995. In 1997 Stanford offered him the Rosina Pierotti Chair of Italian Literature. In 2002, he was named chair of the Department of French and Italian. In 2006 he became a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. In 2014 he was knighted "Chevalier" by the French Republic. He is also lead guitarist for the cerebral rock band Glass Wave.
Professor Harrison's first book, The Body of Beatrice, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 1988. The Body of Beatrice was translated into Japanese in 1994. Over the next few years Professor Harrison worked on his next book, Forests: The Shadow of Civilization, which appeared in 1992 with University of Chicago Press. This book deals with the multiple and complex ways in which the Western imagination has symbolized, represented, and conceived of forests, primarily in literature, religion, and mythology. It offers a select history that begins in antiquity and ends in our own time. Forests appeared simultaneously in English, French, Italian, and German. It subsequently appeared in Japanese and Korean as well. In 1994 his book Rome, la Pluie: A Quoi Bon Littérature? appeared in France, Italy, and Germany. This book is written in the form of dialogues between two characters and deals with various topics such as art restoration, the vocation of literature, and the place of the dead in contemporary society. Professor Harrison's next book, The Dominion of the Dead, published in 2003 by University of Chicago Press, deals with the relations the living maintain with the dead in diverse secular realms. This book was translated into German, French and Italian. Professor Harrison's book Gardens: An Essay on the Human Condition appeared in 2008 with the University of Chicago Press, and in French with Le Pommier (subsequently appeared in German and Chinese translations). His most recent book Juvenescence: A Cultural History of Our Age came out in 2014 with Chicago University Press. In 2005 Harrison started a literary talk show on KZSU radio called "Entitled Opinions." The show features hour long conversations with a variety of scholars, writers, and scientists. -

Gabrielle Hecht
Professor of History
BioGabrielle Hecht is Professor of History and (by courtesy) of Anthropology. She is also Research Associate at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research in South Africa.

Hecht's current research explores the inside-out Earth and its wastes in order to reveal the hidden costs of energy waste, with research sites in the Arctic, the Andes, southern Africa, and west Africa. Her 2023 book, *Residual Governance: How South African Foretells Planetary Futures,* received two 2024 PROSE Awards (for Excellence in Social Science and for Government and Politics) from the Association of American Publishers. It also received the 2024 E. Ohnuki Tierney award in Historical Anthropology from the American Anthropological Association, the 2024 Best Book Award from the African Studies Association, 3rd place for the Victor Turner Award in Ethnographic Writing, and a finalist for the Fleck prize from the Society for the Social Studies of Science.
Hecht's graduate courses include colloquia on "Power in the Anthropocene," "Infrastructure and Power in the Global South," "Technopolitics," and "Materiality and Power." She supervises dissertations in science and technology studies (STS), transnational history, and African studies. Her undergraduate course in "Racial Justice in the Nuclear Age" was built in partnership with the Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates (BVHPCA).
Hecht’s 2012 book *Being Nuclear: Africans and the Global Uranium Trade* offers new perspectives on the global nuclear order by focusing on African uranium mines and miners. It received awards from the Society for the Social Studies of Science, the American Historical Association, the American Sociological Association, and the Suzanne M. Glasscock Humanities Institute, as well as an honorable mention from the African Studies Association. An abridged version appeared in French as *Uranium Africain, une histoire globale* (Le Seuil 2016). Her first book, *The Radiance of France: Nuclear Power and National Identity* (1998/ 2nd ed 2009), explores how the French embedded nuclear policy in reactor technology, and nuclear culture in reactor operations. It received awards from the American Historical Association and the Society for the History of Technology, and has appeared in French as *Le rayonnement de la France: Énergie nucléaire et identité nationale après la seconde guerre mondiale* (2004/ 2nd ed. 2014).
Her affiliations at Stanford include the Center for African Studies, the Program in Science, Technology, and Society, the Center for Global Ethnography, the Program on Urban Studies, and the Program in History and Philosophy of Science. Before returning to Stanford in 2017, Hecht taught in the University of Michigan’s History department for 18 years, where she helped to found and direct UM’s Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) and served as associate director of UM’s African Studies Center.
Hecht holds a PhD in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania (1992), and a bachelor’s degree in Physics from MIT (1986). She’s been a visiting scholar in universities in Australia, France, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, and Sweden. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council for Learned Societies, and the South African and Dutch national research foundations, among others. -

BioI did my undergraduate work at Amherst and went on to graduate school at Princeton. Since then I've taught at Harvard, UCLA, The University of Pennsylvania, The University of Michigan, Berkeley, and Stanford. I resumed my graduate career a little while back -- from a distance, as it were -- receiving the PhD in 2005.
I'm married to another philosopher, Krista Lawlor.
My interests continue to center in aesthetics, but they have spilled over into pretty much every branch of philosophy at one time or another.

Michael Hines

On Leave from 10/01/2025 To 06/30/2026BioMichael Hines is a historian of American education whose work concentrates on the educational activism of Black teachers, students, and communities during the Progressive Era (1890s-1940s). He is an Assistant Professor of Education, and an affiliated faculty member with the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Bill Lane Center for the American West. He is the author of A Worthy Piece of Work (Beacon Press, 2022) which details how African Americans educator activists in the early twentieth century created new curricular discourses around race and historical representation. Dr. Hines has published six peer reviewed articles and book chapters in outlets including the Journal of African American History, History of Education Quarterly, Review of Educational Research, and the Journal of the History Childhood and Youth. He has also written for popular outlets including the Washington Post, Time magazine, and Chalkbeat. He teaches courses including History of Education in the U.S., and Education for Liberation: A History of African American Education, 1800-The Present.

Stephen Hinton

BioStephen Hinton is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Music at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in German. His research focuses on aesthetics, the history of music theory, and the music of Kurt Weill, Paul Hindemith, and Beethoven.
He has held several leadership roles at Stanford, including Denning Family Director of the Stanford Arts Institute (2011–2015), Senior Associate Dean for Humanities & Arts (2006–2010), and multiple terms as Chair of the Department of Music. Before coming to Stanford, he taught at Yale University and the Technische Universität Berlin.
Hinton is the author of Weill’s Musical Theater: Stages of Reform (winner of the 2013 Kurt Weill Prize), as well as numerous books, articles, and critical editions, including Kurt Weill: The Threepenny Opera in the Cambridge Opera Handbooks series. His work has appeared in major reference works and handbooks, and he has edited Beethoven Forum as well as volumes in the collected editions of both Weill and Hindemith.
His recent projects include a revised German edition of his Weill monograph (Kurt Weills Musiktheater: Vom Songspiel zur American Opera, Suhrkamp 2023) and the online edX courses on Haydn and Beethoven for the series Defining the String Quartet, created with the St. Lawrence String Quartet. -

She holds a B.A. from Boston College in Philosophy with minors in Psychoanalytics and Women’s & Gender Studies (2015). She received her M.A. in the History of Art and Archaeology: Religious Arts of Asia from SOAS University of London (2020).
Julia’s current research explores Buddhist material religion and visual culture, power objects, and ritual from an art-historical perspective. Of particular interest are relic cults, funerary rites, and the importance—and soteriological potential—of sensory encounter in South Asian and Himalayan traditions.
Prior to joining Stanford, Julia worked for several years at Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, where she continues to serve as a contributing editor covering Buddhist art, film, and publishing. -
Allyson Hobbs

BioAllyson Hobbs is an Assistant Professor in the History Department at Stanford University. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and she received a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of Chicago. She has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity at Stanford. Allyson teaches courses on American identity, African American history, African American women’s history, and twentieth century American history. She has won numerous teaching awards including the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize, the Graves Award in the Humanities, and the St. Clair Drake Teaching Award. She gave a TEDx talk at Stanford, she has appeared on C-Span, MSNBC, National Public Radio, and her work has been featured on cnn.com, slate.com, and in the Los Angeles Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Christian Science Monitor, and the New York Times.
Allyson’s first book, A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life, published by Harvard University Press in October 2014, examines the phenomenon of racial passing in the United States from the late eighteenth century to the present. A Chosen Exile won two prizes from the Organization of American Historians: the Frederick Jackson Turner Prize for best first book in American history and the Lawrence Levine Prize for best book in American cultural history. A Chosen Exile has been featured on All Things Considered on National Public Radio, Book TV on C-SPAN, The Melissa Harris-Perry Show on MSNBC, the Tavis Smiley Show on Public Radio International, the Madison Show on SiriusXM, and TV News One with Roland Martin. A Chosen Exile has been reviewed in the New York Times Book Review, the San Francisco Chronicle, Harper’s, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and the Boston Globe. The book was selected as a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice, a “Best Book of 2014” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and a “Book of the Week” by the Times Higher Education in London. Christina Hiromi Hobbs

Ph.D. Minor, Comparative Studies in Race and EthnicityBioChristina Hiromi Hobbs is an independent curator, writer, and art historian based in the Bay Area.
She is a PhD candidate in Art History at Stanford University with a minor in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity whose work focuses on twentieth century American art, modern and contemporary art of the Asian diaspora, and the history of photography. They are particularly interested in the intimacies of history, racial formation and historical memory, and vernacular archival practices.
Her recent projects include curating the exhibitions "In the Presence Of: Collective Histories of the Asian American Women Artists Association" at Berkeley Art Center (2024) and "Reflections of a Young Woman: Photographs from the Archive of Shigeko Kumamoto" at Latitude Chicago (2024). She also co-curated "No Monument: In the Wake of the Japanese American Incarceration" at the Noguchi Museum in Queens, New York (2022) which was featured in Artforum, Momus, Hyperallergic, The Guardian, and Public Seminar.
They have held research and curatorial positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Modern Art Museum of Shanghai, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, and The Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust. Her scholarship has been supported by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. -
Suleiman Hodali
Postdoctoral Scholar, Comparative Literature
BioSuleiman Hodali received a PhD in comparative literature from UCLA. He is a Postdoctoral Scholar in Comparative Literature at Stanford University, and was previously a 2025-26 UC President's Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Riverside.
His research and teaching are situated at the intersections of several different fields, including eighteenth and nineteenth century studies, British Romanticism, translation theory, modern Arabic literature and culture, literary and critical theory, the history of ideas, colonial and postcolonial theory and criticism.
Recent and forthcoming writings appear in such publications as Studies in Romanticism, South Atlantic Quarterly, Political Concepts: A Critical Lexicon, and Ebb Magazine.
He is presently completing his first book project, titled, New Jerusalems and Modern Crusades: Holy Lands in the Imaginative Geography of Empire. -

Studied with Byron Janis, Herbert Stessin (Juilliard School of Music), Christopher Elton, Hamish Milne, Dominique Merlet (Conservatoire de Genève), other masterclasses or private lessons with Andras Schiff, Alfred Brendel, Christopher Hogwood, Sarah Davis Buechner, Jerome Lowenthal, Piers Lane, amongst others. Champion of the music of British composer John McCabe, she contributed the chapter on his piano works for 'Landscapes of the Mind' published by Ashgate and recorded several CDs of his works including with McCabe, one recognized as 'Editor's Choice' and others consistently receiving five stars from Gramophone Magazine and BBC Music Magazine. She has also recorded other highly rated CDs of works by Chopin, Mozart, Rawsthorne and contemporary composers for SOMM, Dutton and Metier labels. Her recording of the piano quintet version with the Vilnius Quartet was 'CD of the Week' (The Independent, UK). As collaborative pianist, she has performed complete cycles of all Beethoven works for every instrument, played for classes of Maurice Hausson (violin), John Wallace (trumpet) as a student and later performed with Mats Lidstrom, Peter Sheppard-Skaerved at the Warsaw Autumn Festival, and founded the Tate Ensemble which performed at the Aldeburgh Festival and received high praise from the New York Times for their Carnegie Debut. Upon coming to the Bay Area in 2007 she has founded the Cal Arte Ensemble and has continued to perform and solo with many orchestras but also continues to record, supports local opera companies, coaches in vocal and ensemble, adjudicates in competitions in the US and abraod, and offers private lessons (is affiliated with CMTA and Vantage Academy in Hong Kong). She has worked as vocal and ensemble coach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and was Master Teacher at the Community School of Music & Art in Mountain View. She is most proud of her four children filling the home with their own various musical noises.

Margo E Horn

BioMARGO HORN has been teaching history at Stanford since 1985. She received her PhD from Tufts University and was awarded fellowships from NIMH and the Commonwealth Fund. In 2018, Dr. Horn was appointed the Silverman Visiting Professor at the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science at Tel Aviv University. Dr. Horn’s research and teaching combines interests in US women’s history and the history of medicine. She has a longstanding fascination with the history of madness and psychiatry and is the author of "Before It’s Too Late: The Child Guidance Movement in the United States, 1922-1945," among other publications. Dr. Horn taught in Stanford’s Department of History and program in Structured Liberal Education (SLE). She currently teaches courses on the history of women and mental illness, and the history of women and medicine in the United States, in Stanford’s programs in Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies and American Studies. In addition, Dr. Horn directed Stanford’s program in Innovative Academic Courses, and offered workshops for advanced doctoral students across the university on the future of their research. Her current research projects concern the history of women physicians in the US, the history of women and mental illness in America, and global women leaders.

Ariel Horowitz

BioAriel Horowitz is a graduate student in Comparative Literature, focusing on Jewish literature and the ways in which twentieth-century Jewish writers, both Israeli and American, understand History. He holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Philosophy from the Hebrew University, and an M.A. (Summa Cum Laude) from the Hebrew University, where he wrote his thesis about Gershom Scholem's influence on Yaakov Shabtai's magnum opus, Past Continuous. Other interests include political theology, literary theory and continental philosophy. Ariel is also a novelist: his debut novel, Our Finest, was published with Keter Publishing House in 2021.

Blair Hoxby
Professor of English
BioBlair Hoxby writes on literature and culture from 1500 to 1800. Two of his foremost interests are the commercial culture and the theatrical practices of the period. Mammon's Music: Literature and Economics in the Age of Milton (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2002) examines the impact of the commercial revolution on writings of major seventeenth-century poets such as Milton and Dryden. Together with Ann Coiro, he is editing a large multi-author collection of essays on Milton in the Long Restoration. Two of his new books nearing completion focus on tragic dramaturgy. What Is Tragedy? Theory and the Early Modern Canon seeks to free the early modern poetics of tragedy and the early modern theatrical repertoire from the expectations erected by the romantic and post-romantic philosophy of the tragic that has dominated tragic theory from Schelling to the present. Reading for the Passions: Performing Early Modern Tragedy argues that the passions, not deeds or character, hold the keys to early modern tragic performance.

Hector Hoyos

BioHéctor Hoyos is a scholar of modern Latin American and comparative literature. He writes about ideological critiques of globalization in the post-1989 Latin American novel, the articulation of critical theory and new materialism in the region’s cultural production, and related topics. His current monograph in progress examines the works of Gabriel García Márquez from a law and humanities perspective.

Wanheng Hu
Postdoctoral Scholar, Philosophy
BioWanheng Hu is an Embedded Ethics Fellow at Stanford University, jointly appointed by the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society, the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), and the Computer Science Department.
His research lies at the intersection of social studies of science, medicine, and technology; critical data/algorithm studies; media studies; and public engagement with science. His current book project ethnographically examines the cultivation of credible machine learning models in complex expert practices, with an empirical focus on image-based diagnostics within the Chinese medical AI industry. Another line of his work focuses on the democratic engagement of ordinary citizens in technoscientific affairs, particularly concerning AI development.
Wanheng received his Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies from Cornell University, where he also completed a minor in Media Studies and remains a member of the Artificial Intelligence, Policy, and Practice (AIPP) initiative. He is currently an affiliate at the Data & Society Research Institute. -
Stephanie Jane Hunt

BioStephanie is an actor, director, and teacher of voice and acting. As a core member of the Bay Area theatre company, Word for Word, Stephanie has acted in numerous productions, including Tobias Wolff’s Sanity, Colm Tóibín’s Silence, Upton Sinclair’s Oil! and Susan Glaspell’s A Jury of her Peers. She was nominated for a Bay Area Critics Circle award for her performance as the mysterious Old Woman on the train in Kevin Barry's short story Wintersongs. Stephanie played Lizzie Borden in The Fall River Axe Murders by Angela Carter directed by Amy Freed. For Word for Word, Stephanie directed the productions of Bullet in the Brain and Lady's Dream by Tobias Wolff, and All Aunt Hagar’s Children by Edward P. Jones, which played at the Z Space before touring France. Also, she directed the noir thriller Angel Face by Cornell Woolrich. She has acted with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Campo Santo, Aurora Theatre, the Magic Theatre, Berkeley Shakespeare, the One Act Theater, and in New York at La Mama. For two years with Pulp Playhouse, Stephanie performed late-night comedy improv with O-Lan Jones and Mike McShane at the Eureka Theater. She has taught voice at ACT in the Summer Training Congress, and at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, Chabot College, and Sonoma State University. Stephanie text and voice coaches many of the mainstage productions in the TAPS Department at Stanford University. She has directed a number of university productions. Most recently at Stanford, she directed Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov, which was attended by the entire freshmen COLLEGE cohort. At USF, she directed Twelfth Night, and adapted and directed Alice Munro’s The View from Castle Rock. At Sonoma State she directed The Green Bird by Carlo Gozzi, Top Girls by Caryl Churchill, Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel, and The Exception and the Rule by Bertolt Brecht. Her training includes an MFA from the American Conservatory Theater and certification as an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework. Stephanie is committed to creating and teaching ensemble-based theater with a focus on heightened language.

BioI received my B.S. in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University in 1990. I then went to the Department of Philosophy at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I completed a Ph.D. there in 1999. I also spent the academic year of 1998-99 at Universität Bielefeld in Germany. I have been teaching at Stanford since 2000.

Scott Hutchins

BioScott Hutchins is a former Truman Capote fellow in the Wallace Stegner Program at Stanford University. His work has appeared in StoryQuarterly, Catamaran, Five Chapters, The Owls, The Rumpus, The New York Times, San Francisco Magazine and Esquire, and has been set to improvisational jazz. He is the recipient of two major Hopwood awards and the Andrea Beauchamp prize in short fiction. In 2006 and 2010, he was an artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. His novel A Working Theory of Love was a San Francisco Chronicle and Salon Best Book of 2012 and has been translated into nine languages.
