Genevieve Smith
Postdoctoral Scholar, Comparative Literature
BioI am a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University in the Clayman Institute for Gender Research. I completed my doctoral degree at the University of Oxford, where I studied societal impacts of artificial intelligence in low- and middle-income countries, focusing on gender. As a social scientist with a disciplinary background of science and technology studies (STS) and devleopment studies, I examine the impacts of AI on inequality and society, as well as explore more equitable and responsible paradigms for AI technologies globally. I founded the Responsible AI Initiative at the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research Lab and teach on responsible AI. I am a research affiliate at the Minderoo Centre for Technology & Democracy at Cambridge University and at the Technology & Management Centre for Development at University of Oxford. Prior, I served as the Responsible AI Fellow at the United States Agency for International Development and as Interim Co-Director of the UC Berkeley AI Policy Hub.

Mikaela Spruill
Postdoctoral Scholar, Psychology
BioMikaela Spruill is a postdoctoral fellow with the SPARQ research collaborative in Stanford University's Department of Psychology.
An expert in psychology and law, the objective of her research is to examine how the law shapes individual psychologies, and how individuals produce judgments that define laws and policies. Leveraging quantitative and qualitative experimental methods, she tests how individually expressed factors and structurally imposed factors inform the judgments and decisions that people come to. Her research reveals how the racialized experiences that people have in stratified societies translates to decision making, and demonstrates how those decisions define and reinforce larger inequalities in society. -

Aube Tollu
Postdoctoral Scholar, Sociology
BioDr. Aube Tollu is currently working on a new book on childhood, affect and war-making.
Aube works on armed movements in Europe and elsewhere, focusing on micro and intimate dynamics of relationalities in violent environments.
In addition to their PhD from Lund University, they hold a Mphil in Criminology from the University of Cambridge, a MSc in African Studies from the University of Oxford, a Bachelor with honors in European Studies (and War Studies) from King's College London and Sciences Po Paris. Previous to their postdoctoral appointment as a Wallenberg Scholar at the University of Stanford Ethnography Lab, they have been a visiting scholar at the University of Stanford and at the University of Cambridge's Institute of Criminology.

Juliana Velez-Gomez

BioJuliana Vélez (she/her) is a postdoctoral researcher with the Natural Capital Project, studying land-use change and vector-borne disease risk. Her research applies quantitative ecological methods to understand interactions among species, their habitat, and anthropogenic disturbance. Juliana's work incorporates ecological experimentation and collaborations with decision makers to assess the effectiveness of conservation actions for improving ecosystems. She conducts her research under open science standards and has contributed to the development of online resources for reproducible research, including the publication of guides, datasets, and code related to statistical modeling and data processing using artificial intelligence. Juliana earned her Ph.D. in Conservation Sciences from the University of Minnesota.

Postdoctoral Scholar, GeneticsCurrent Research and Scholarly InterestsElisa Visher is broadly interested in the (co)evolution of life history strategies, niche breadth, diversification, and adaptability. They use mostly experimental evolution methods in microbial systems to test the predictions and assumptions of theoretical literature. Currently, they am especially interested in understanding the genetics of trade-offs in microbes to better understand patterns of diversity in nature and constraints to adaptation.
