John Wesson Ashford Jr

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioDr. Ashford is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (affiliated) at Stanford University and has been a staff psychiatrist since 2003 and the Director of the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System since 2007. Dr. Ashford is a Senior Research Scientist at the Stanford / VA Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Clinical Research Centers. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board and Chair of the Memory Screening Advisory Board of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, a Senior Editor of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, and the 14th President of the Society for Brain Mapping & Therapeutics.
Dr. Ashford obtained a BA the University of California, Berkeley in 1970. At UCLA (1970–1985) he attained an MD (1974) and PhD (1984), trained in psychiatry (1975-1979), co-founded the Neurobehavior Clinic, and was the first Chief Resident and Associate Director (1979-1980) on the Geriatric Psychiatry In-Patient Unit. He conducted the first double-blind study of an anti-cholinesterase drug (physostigmine) to treat Alzheimer patients (Ashford et al., 1981), a therapy which is now standard treatment for Alzheimer patients. Between 1980-1985, Dr. Ashford directed the Geriatric Psychiatry Out-patient Clinic at the Neuropsychiatric Institute and initiated the UCLA/Alzheimer PET scan study with Dr. David Kuhl.
Between 1979-1984 under Dr. Joaquin Fuster, Dr. Ashford completed his Ph.D. dissertation, a finalist for the Lindsley Prize for the best in Behavioral Neuroscience in 1984. With Dr. Fuster, he made the first proposal and physiologic demonstration of massive, reciprocal parallel information processing in the cerebral cortex (Ashford et al., 1985); a basis of memory, particularly that aspect of memory affected by Alzheimer’s disease (Ashford, Coburn, and Fuster, 1998). His Alzheimer and neurophysiology study led to the water-shed observation that neuroplastic memory mechanisms of the brain are specifically affected by Alzheimer pathology (Ashford & Jarvik, 1985; Ashford, 2015).
Dr. Ashford was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine between 1985-1990, helping to establish an NIA-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Center. There he published the first use of Modern Test Theory in the field of Medicine, “Item-Response Theory” analysis of the Mini-Mental State Exam (Ashford et al., 1989). He was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, Davis 1991-1992, at the Martinez, VAMC, and Chief of the Mental Hygiene Clinic. He was at the University of Kentucky from 1992-2003 as a tenured Associate Professor in Psychiatry, Neurology, and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry, where he continued his Alzheimer research. He proposed a “Time-Index” method to measure Alzheimer dementia severity (Ashford et al., 1995; Ashford & Schmitt, 2001), used in the UK Nun Study (Butler, Ashford, Snowden, 1996), and to study loss of cerebral perfusion in Alzheimer patients (Ashford et al., 2000). With Dr. James Geddes he showed the central role of paired helical filament pathology in destroying neuronal processes (Ashford et al., 1998).
Dr. Ashford’s long-term research interests are aging, Alzheimer’s disease, brain imaging, and memory mechanisms. He has developed early detection and measurement methods for mild cognitive disorders and Alzheimer’s disease, currently working on an internet program: www.memtrax.com . He is reformulating theories of Alzheimer pathology. As Director of WRIISC CA, he has studied traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, chronic multi-symptom illness, and other neuropsychiatric illnesses.

Sherry Ann Beaudreau

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioDr. Beaudreau is a licensed clinical psychologist with board certification in geropsychology. As PI of the Mental Health, Neurocognition, and Treatment in Older Adults lab, she conducts late life clinical research and mentors trainees in the Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center at VA Palo Alto. Nationally, she directs the 28-site VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment. She holds appointments as Clinical Professor (Affiliated) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine and as an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. In her capacity as a VA Subject Matter Expert in Problem Solving Training, she is actively involved in clinician trainings, consultation, and development of program materials for the national roll-out of Problem Solving Therapy for Suicide Prevention.
Her overarching research aims to leverage knowledge about the cognitive profiles of older adults with psychiatric disorders or at risk for suicide to inform the development and optimization of psychiatric behavioral interventions, including Problem Solving Therapy. She is the PI of a 5-year, multi-site randomized control trial to determine the efficacy of Problem Solving Therapy for reducing suicidal ideation over and above usual care. She is a Fellow of the Behavioral and Social Sciences section for Gerontological Society of America and the division of Adult Aging and Development for American Psychological Association. Additionally, she serves on several journal editorial boards including American Psychologist, Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, and Clinical Gerontologist. In the department, she co-chairs the Stanford/VA Palo Alto interdepartmental Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuroscience Grand Rounds, an interdisciplinary forum featuring national and international experts in geriatrics (http://med.stanford.edu/psychiatry/education/gpngrandrounds.html) and is a member of the departmental Nominations and Awards committee. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAs the Founding Director of the Stanford Center for Memory Disorders and Principal Investigator of a lab focused on the genetics of Alzheimer's disease (AD), Dr. Greicius' research focuses on elucidating the neurobiologic underpinnings of AD. His lab combines cutting edge brain imaging, "deep" phenotyping, and whole-genome sequencing of human subjects to identify novel pathways involved in AD pathogenesis. The goal of his work is to develop effective treatment for AD patients.

Erin Heinemeyer, PsyD

BioDr. Erin Heinemeyer is an Associate Professor at Palo Alto University and a faculty member in the PAU–Stanford PsyD Consortium. Her clinical interests include complex trauma and PTSD, functional neurological disorder, and personality, depressive, and anxiety disorders. As part of her role in the Consortium, she serves as Practicum Co-Director at the VA Palo Alto Outpatient Mental Health Clinic and provides clinical supervision to doctoral and postdoctoral trainees. She also teaches Biological Bases of Behavior, advises doctoral students, and serves on dissertation committees. In addition, she maintains a psychotherapy practice in the community through a private group practice. Max Kasun

BioMax Kasun works in the Roberts Ethics Lab and Kim Ethics Lab at Stanford, which use empirical methods to help anticipate, clarify, and resolve ethical issues in modern biomedical research and clinical care. He received his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has interests in empirical and normative thought dedicated to increasing scientific understanding and societal appreciation of the nature, experience, and prevalence of mental illness and wellbeing. More broadly, he is interested in moral philosophy (e.g. justice, action, capability, neo-Aristotelianism, and pragmatism), cognitive and affective sciences, and philosophy of mind (e.g. embodiment and personhood). He has co-authored scientific, peer-reviewed articles and other scholarly work investigating ethical issues in research that involves human volunteers (e.g. authentic voluntarism in informed consent (National Institutes of Health; PI: Dr. Laura Weiss Roberts)), psychiatric ethics, medical education, public health, and neuroscience. His most recent contributions to NIH-funded scientific work (National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences; PI: Dr. Jane Kim) have focused on investigating ethical issues encountered in the design, development, and clinical integration of artificial intelligence, e.g., how environmental and cognitive factors shape appraisals of AI tools, clinical judgments, trust, and health decision-making.
Max is a co-author of several chapters in APA's Study Guide to DSM-5-TR (2024) including the chapters on bipolar and related disorders and personality disorders (American Psychiatric Association). He has published work in and provided editorial support for the peer-reviewed journal Academic Medicine (Oxford University Press) and for two works on the subject of trauma and crisis and related interventions, including a reference guide for providing mental health care to victims of state atrocity (United Nations, Springer). Previously, he served on leadership teams for the Stanford Mental Health Technology and Innovation Hub and Neurodiversity Project.
Max is currently working on developing a new Special Initiative of the Chair on Mental Health Care for Unhoused and Justice-Involved Persons (see https://med.stanford.edu/psychiatry/special-initiatives/mhuj.html). The initiative aims to bring together a community of scholars, public stakeholders, and health care professionals to advance more humane and participatory inquiry and health policy in service of a population that faces profound controversy, health stigma, and scientific neglect. The initiative aims to improve how science is communicated to the public and policy decision-makers and to develop more evidence-based, pragmatic, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approaches to mental health care for unhoused persons, including those who have experienced episodic or cyclical involvement in the criminal and civil justice systems. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Levinson directs the Program on the Genetics of Brain Function in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The program investigates the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia and major depressive disorder), using genetic association, linkage and resequencing methodologies. In collaboration with Dr. Alice Whittemore, we are also actively engaged in statistical methods testing and development for genetic research.

Eric Lin

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioEric Lin, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine and an addiction psychiatrist at VA Palo Alto. His academic work focuses on artificial intelligence, large language models, machine learning, and psychiatry, with particular interest in the clinical evaluation, safety, and governance of AI systems used in mental health care and related psychological contexts.
Dr. Lin studies how AI systems should be assessed when they interact with patients, clinicians, or psychologically vulnerable users. His work addresses the limitations of benchmark-driven evaluation and the need for clinically meaningful approaches to AI evaluation that incorporate psychiatric expertise, real-world clinical complexity, and post-deployment risk. His broader interests include psychopathology, personality assessment, psychoanalytic and psychodynamic models of mind, and the translation of complex clinical judgment into rigorous evaluation frameworks for emerging technologies.
Dr. Lin completed psychiatry residency at Yale University, where he trained in the Neuroscience Research Training Program, and later completed a medical informatics fellowship through VA Boston, with research at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital on computational and digital approaches to psychiatric phenotyping. He is board certified in psychiatry and clinical informatics. His clinical and teaching work in addiction psychiatry grounds his interest in psychiatric complexity, risk assessment, care navigation, and pragmatic implementation of AI tools in health care. He is interested in collaborations across psychiatry, computer science, human-centered AI, health policy, digital mental health, and responsible technology development. -
M Windy McNerney, PhD

Windy McNerney is the Director of Biological Sciences for the MIRECC at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. McNerney holds a particular passion for not only understanding the neurophysiology and biochemistry of mental health diseases, but also advocating for these invisible diseases. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration, depression, TBI, PTSD, and addiction. She is collaborating with researchers to integrate brain imaging and biochemical markers in hopes to better understand these diseases. She also is taking a lead role at the VA in investigating the biochemistry of magnetic brain stimulation and is the leader of the NeuroNado Laboratory. At Stanford University, she is the professor of two popular courses examining the biological and societal issues surrounding substance use disorder, with a major focus on opioids such as fentanyl. She has individually mentored over 25 students from underrepresented groups in STEM activities and leads monthly seminars aimed at facilitating career development. In her free time, she is a community advocate for the treatment of mental health and educates groups about the dangers of fentanyl.
She earned her BS from UC Davis and her PhD from the University of Notre Dame. While at ND, she interned at NASA Ames on Human Factors Engineering. She then went on to a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (DOE), and then completed a fellowship at the WRIISC program at the VA and Stanford University.

Colleen Mills-Finnerty

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioDr. Mills-Finnerty received her PhD in Psychology from Rutgers University, with a focus on cognitive neuroscience. She completed a MIRECC Advanced Fellowship at the Palo Alto VA and Stanford Dept. Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, studying mood disorders using neuroimaging and neurostimulation. She was then awarded a VA Career Development Award to study attention and reward function in mood disorders. She joined the Women’s Operational Military Exposures Network as a Research Scientist in 2024. She is interested in health disparities that impact neurological and mental health in women Veterans, and their relationship to Military Environmental Exposures.
She has authored multiple award-winning papers, including “Affective Neuroscience: Applications for Sexual Medicine Research and Clinical Practice,” proposing a novel treatment schema for sexual trauma based on affective neuroscience, which was awarded the Bronze Prize for Best Paper by the International Society for Sexual Medicine. -
Clayton Olash

BioClayton Olash, MD is a psychiatry resident at the Medical University of South Carolina and an affiliate researcher with Stanford University. His work bridges psychiatry, neuroscience, and contemplative traditions, with a focus on how altered states of consciousness can catalyze lasting psychological change.
Clayton's current research spans multiple projects, including studies on ibogaine and its impact on the default mode network, rapid-acting neuromodulation techniques such as SAINT TMS combined with meditation, and a novel high-dose electrotherapy device for home-based treatment of depression. His broader aim is to understand how psychedelics, brain stimulation, and meditative practices can modulate self-related processing and promote enduring well-being.
With backgrounds in philosophy, psychology, and medicine, Clayton's work emphasizes integration: uniting ancient contemplative wisdom with modern neuroscience and emerging technologies. His long-term goal is to develop translational models of care that transform transient altered states into sustainable therapeutic traits. -

TRAINING
Dr. Rosen is board certified in clinical neuropsychology with a geriatric focus. She completed college at Brown University, a clinical psychology Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University, clinical neuropsychology internship at the Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York, and clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Rosen completed specialty research fellowship training at the National Institute on Aging (Intramural Research Training Award) and Stanford (NRSA F32, K01) in functional imaging and noninvasive brain stimulation with support from NIA.
CLINICAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Dr. Rosen is Director of Dementia Education at the Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center at the Palo Alto VAHCS. She is also a neuropsychologist and part of the consensus clinical group and education core at the Stanford’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (NIA). Dr. Rosen’s funded research has focused on applying cognitive neuroscience of aging to improve clinical practice in older adults by using cognitive measures, brain imaging, and noninvasive brain stimulation such as TMS. Studies include using fMRI as an outcome measure for cognitive training, studying how to improve the accuracy of transcranial magnetic stimulation targeting with and without image guidance, and using structural MRI to avoid postoperative cognitive decline and improve outcome from carotid vascular procedures. She has a longstanding commitment to neuroethics and leads a feature in the Journal of Alzheimer Disease that focuses on ethical issues in new and emerging AD applications.
