Achintya K. Bhowmik, PhD

BioDr. Achin Bhowmik serves on the faculty of Stanford University as an adjunct professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, where he advises research and lectures in the areas of sensory augmentation, computational perception, cognitive neuroscience, and intelligent systems. He is also an affiliate faculty member of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and Human Performance Alliance, and a mentor for the Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program.
Dr. Bhowmik is the chief technology officer and executive vice president of engineering at Starkey Hearing Technologies, a privately-held medical devices company with over 5,000 employees and operations in over 100 countries worldwide. In this role, he is responsible for the company’s technology strategy, research and development, engineering and program management departments, and leading the drive to transform hearing aids into multifunction wearable health and communication devices with advanced sensors and artificial intelligence.
Previously, Dr. Bhowmik was the vice president and general manager of the Perceptual Computing Group at Intel Corporation, where he was responsible for the R&D, engineering, operations, and businesses in the areas of 3D sensing and interactive computing, computer vision and artificial intelligence, autonomous robots and drones, and immersive virtual and merged reality devices.
Dr. Bhowmik is a member of the Forbes Technology Council, board of trustees for the National Captioning Institute, board of directors for OpenCV, board of advisors for the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley, and industry advisory board for the Institute for Engineering in Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He is also on the board of directors and advisors for several technology startup companies.
He has also held adjunct and guest professor positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Liquid Crystal Institute of the Kent State University, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. He received his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, PhD from Auburn University, and attended the Executive Program at Stanford University. He has authored over 200 publications, including two books and over 80 granted patents.
His awards and honors include Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA), President and Fellow of the Society for Information Display (SID), Top 25 Healthcare Technology CTOs by the Healthcare Technology Report, Notable Leaders in Healthcare by Twin Cities Business, Healthcare Heroes award from the Business Journals, Industrial Distinguished Leader award from the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association, IEEE Distinguished Industry Speaker, TIME’s Best Inventions, Red Dot Design award, MUSE Design award, and the Artificial Intelligence Excellence award.

BioMary Sheridan Bilbao, PA-C, FAPACVS is an advanced practice provider who specializes in Cardiothoracic Surgery. She completed her both her Undergraduate degree and her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at Marywood University. She has many years of cardiothoracic surgery experience, and joined our team in 2014. She works in both in-patient and out-patient aspects of care, assists in surgery, and participates in multiple studies and laboratory research. She has expertise in open and endoscopic vein harvesting, open and endoscopic radial artery harvesting, and assisting in cases including valve replacements, minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve repair/replacements, ascending aorta/aortic dissection/aortic arch repair/replacements, redo surgeries, coronary artery bypass grafting (off and on-pump), robotic-assisted minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting, minimally invasive myocardial bridge unroofing, heart/lung transplants, VADs, ECMO. She frequently participates in training new PAs and NPs, APP fellows, residents and medical students in OR skills, surgical approaches, endoscopic vein harvest, endoscopic radial artery harvest. Also, she has advanced training in assisting in robotic cases for minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. In the clinic, she frequently performs history & physicals, pre-op evaluations, ordering/interpretation of studies & labs, and coordination of in-patient and out-patient care.

Daniel Michael Blonigen

He is also an Affiliate Investigator with the VA National Center for Homelessness Among Veterans, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Minnesota and is a former VA Career Development Awardee in Clinical Sciences R&D. He is licensed as a clinical psychologist in the State of California.
Dr. Blonigen’s research mission is to identify and develop innovations to increase access and engagement in substance use and mental health care for vulnerable populations. In particular, he is interested in testing the effectiveness and implementation potential of mobile health and peer-based interventions for justice-involved and homeless veterans. He is currently leading or co-leading multisite trials of behavioral interventions for justice-involved and homeless veterans. He is also funded by VA HSR&D to tailor smartphone applications for self-management of unhealthy drinking for veteran primary care patients and use of peer specialists to increase patient engagement with these apps.
In addition to research, Dr. Blonigen is actively involved in mentoring and teaching VA research fellows and Stanford University residents. These roles include serving as a faculty mentor for the Stanford Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program, as well as directing the research training program for clinical psychology interns at VA Palo Alto. He is a member of several VA management and oversight committees and has served as a grant reviewer for national and international funders. He is an invited speaker at national conferences and cyberseminars devoted to substance use and mental health research, and he holds editorial positions for leading addiction, personality, and assessment journals. -

Vandana Boparai, MD

BioDr. Vandana Boparai is board certified in Internal Medicine. Her interest in clinical research is one of the reasons she joined medicine. She has been involved in many gastrointestinal research projects in affiliation with Stanford University. Her professional interests include healthcare maintenance, preventative medicine and women’s health, hypertension, acid reflux and diabetes management.
In her free time, she loves spending time with her kids. They love to swim together, and when time allows they love to travel all over the world. Her favorite tourist destination has been the Great Barrier Reef.
