Judith Frydman
Donald Kennedy Chair in the School of Humanities and Sciences and Professor of Genetics
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe long term goal of our research is to understand how proteins fold in living cells. My lab uses a multidisciplinary approach to address fundamental questions about molecular chaperones, protein folding and degradation. In addition to basic mechanistic principles, we aim to define how impairment of cellular folding and quality control are linked to disease, including cancer and neurodegenerative diseases and examine whether reengineering chaperone networks can provide therapeutic strategies.

Adam Frymoyer
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Neonatal and Developmental Medicine
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research interests focus on understanding the clinical pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of medicines used in complex pediatric populations. This includes identifying sources of variation in drug response through the application of population PK-PD modeling and simulation approaches. The goal is to ultimately apply this quantitative understanding to guide therapeutic decision-making in infants and children.

Andrea Fuentes
Clinical Assistant Professor, Neurology & Neurological Sciences
BioDr. Fuentes is a board-certified neurologist with the Movement Disorders Center at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences. Dr. Fuentes completed a movement disorders fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
She provides comprehensive care for patients with different types of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease (PD), atypical parkinsonian disorders, essential tremor, ataxia, dystonia, and chorea. As part of her clinical practice, she performs deep brain stimulation (DBS) evaluation and programming and botulinum toxin injections.
Her research efforts include several clinical trials assessing treatments for movement disorders. She has been a sub-investigator on multiple trials evaluating drug candidates for the treatment of PD and ataxia. She has presented her work at national and international meetings, including those for the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society and the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Fuentes is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. -
Janene Fuerch
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics - Neonatal and Developmental Medicine
BioJanene H. Fuerch, MD is a Clinical Associate Professor of Neonatology at Stanford University Medical Center, as well as an innovator, educator, researcher and physician entrepreneur. She has an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from Brown University and a medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo. At Stanford University she completed a pediatrics residency, neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship and the Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship.
She is also Assistant Director of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Program at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Impact1 where she mentors and advises new entrepreneurs through all aspects of medical device development, from identifying clinical needs to commercialization. Her specific areas of investigational interest include the development and commercialization process of neonatal, pediatric and maternal health medical devices as well as the utilization of a simulated environment to develop and test medical devices. She is a national leader in neonatal resuscitation, ECMO, device development and has been an AHRQ and FDA funded investigator. But her work extends outside of the academic realm to industry having co-founded EMME (acquired by Simple Health 2022) an award-winning reproductive health company, medical director for Novonate (acquired by Laborie 2023) a neonatal umbilical catheter securement company and notable consultant for Vitara (EXTEND - artificial environment to decrease complications of prematurity), and Avanos™. Janene is passionate about improving the health of children and newborns through medical device innovation and research. -

Michael Fujinaka

BioDr. Fujinaka studied Economics and Molecular Biology at Claremont McKenna College. He received his Medical Doctorate (M.D.) from the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Fujinaka completed his Internal Medicine Internship at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. He then Specialized in Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego. Finally, he completed Sub-Specialty training in Pain Medicine at Stanford University. While at Stanford, the Faculty selected him to be Chief of his Fellowship class. He joined as full-time Faculty with Stanford Division of Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology in 2016.

Eri Fukaya

Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population HealthBioDr. Fukaya practices Vascular Medicine at the Stanford Vascular Clinics and Advanced Wound Care Center. She received her medical education in Tokyo and completed her medical training both in the US and Japan. She joined Stanford in 2015.
Vascular Medicine covers a wide range of vascular disorders including chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, post thrombotic syndrome, peripheral artery disease, carotid artery disease, cardiovascular risk evaluation, fibromuscular dysplasia, rare vascular disease, lymphedema, arterial/venous/diabetic ulcers, and wound care.
Dr. Fukaya has a special interest in venous disease and started the Stanford Vascular and Vein Clinic in 2016.

Gerald Fuller

BioThe processing of complex liquids (polymers, suspensions, emulsions, biological fluids) alters their microstructure through orientation and deformation of their constitutive elements. In the case of polymeric liquids, it is of interest to obtain in situ measurements of segmental orientation and optical methods have proven to be an excellent means of acquiring this information. Research in our laboratory has resulted in a number of techniques in optical rheometry such as high-speed polarimetry (birefringence and dichroism) and various microscopy methods (fluorescence, phase contrast, and atomic force microscopy).
The microstructure of polymeric and other complex materials also cause them to have interesting physical properties and respond to different flow conditions in unusual manners. In our laboratory, we are equipped with instruments that are able to characterize these materials such as shear rheometer, capillary break up extensional rheometer, and 2D extensional rheometer. Then, the response of these materials to different flow conditions can be visualized and analyzed in detail using high speed imaging devices at up to 2,000 frames per second.
There are numerous processes encountered in nature and industry where the deformation of fluid-fluid interfaces is of central importance. Examples from nature include deformation of the red blood cell in small capillaries, cell division and structure and composition of the tear film. Industrial applications include the processing of emulsions and foams, and the atomization of droplets in ink-jet printing. In our laboratory, fundamental research is in progress to understand the orientation and deformation of monolayers at the molecular level. These experiments employ state of the art optical methods such as polarization modulated dichroism, fluorescence microscopy, and Brewster angle microscopy to obtain in situ measurements of polymer films and small molecule amphiphile monolayers subject to flow. Langmuir troughs are used as the experimental platform so that the thermodynamic state of the monolayers can be systematically controlled. For the first time, well characterized, homogeneous surface flows have been developed, and real time measurements of molecular and microdomain orientation have been obtained. These microstructural experiments are complemented by measurements of the macroscopic, mechanical properties of the films. -

Enrica Fung, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Nephrology
BioDr. Fung is a board-certified nephrologist with Stanford Health Care’s Kidney Clinic and Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program. She is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology.
Dr. Fung cares for people with all types of kidney diseases. After completing her nephrology fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Fung served as chief of nephrology and led the transplant referral and post-transplant program at Veterans Affairs Loma Linda Healthcare System. Her extensive experience includes working with older adults and veterans with advanced or chronic kidney disease. Dr. Fung’s work reflects a passion for educating and empowering her patients. She integrates their goals of care and other aspects of advanced care planning into treatment planning.
Dr. Fung’s clinical research interests broadly include healthcare delivery and health outcomes in chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Fung is a peer reviewer for several prestigious publications, including Kidney Medicine and the American Heart Journal. She has also been featured on podcasts and health care educational videos. She has presented to her peers at the American Society of Geriatrics, the American Society of Nephrology, and the American College of Physicians, Northern California Chapter. Dr. Fung has also published work in the Merck Manual Professional Edition, the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and the journal of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association.
Dr. Fung is a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and a member of the American Society of Nephrology. -

On Partial Leave from 10/01/2024 To 11/29/2024Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Lawrence Fung an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He is the director of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project, director of the Neurodiversity Clinic, and principal investigator at the Fung Lab. His work, which focuses on autism and neurodiversity, traverses from multi-modal neuroimaging studies to new conceptualization of neurodiversity and its application to clinical, education, and employment settings. His lab advances the understanding of neural bases of human socio-communicative and cognitive functions by using novel neuroimaging and bioanalytical technologies. Using community-based participatory research approach, his team devises and implements novel interventions to improve the lives of neurodiverse individuals by maximizing their potential and productivity. His work has been supported by various agencies including the National Institutes of Health, Autism Speaks, California Department of Developmental Services, California Department of Rehabilitation, as well as philanthropy. He received his PhD in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and MD from George Washington University. He completed his general psychiatry residency, child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship, and postdoctoral research fellowship at Stanford.

Adam received his master's degree in biostatistics from the University of California (Davis), and his law degree from the University of Colorado (Boulder). He has served as a biostatistician on various grant-funded studies and clinical trials working with diverse teams including statisticians, doctors, surgeons, radiologists, dosimetrists, epidemiologists and other investigators. He is passionate about collaborative research to advance data and evidence-based practice in medicine and healthcare policy in general.

He is a Principal Investigator and Director of the California War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) Advanced Fellowship Post-Doctoral program and Associate Director of Neuroimaging. He is also a Senior Research Scientist at the Polytrauma System of Care (PSC) at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Dr. Furst serves as Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Neurology and is a member of the editorial board of NEUROLOGY. His research focuses on chronic multisymptom illness, traumatic brain injury, sleep, pain and neurodegenerative diseases.
