Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe goal of my lab is to understand the fundamental principles of human brain plasticity and build trans-diagnostic real-time monitoring platforms for personalized neurotherapeutics.
We use an array of neuroscience methods to better understand the basic principles of how to create change in brain circuits. We use this knowledge to develop more effective treatment strategies for depression and other psychiatric disorders. -

BioEric J. Keller is an interventional/diagnostic radiology resident (2019-2024) with a background in bioethics, medical anthropology, 4D flow MRI, and legal guardianship. He founded the Applied Ethics in Interventional Radiology (IR) working group, a multi-institutional group of faculty and trainees developing practical approaches to challenging situations in IR. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Interventional Initiative, a nonprofit devoted to patient and clinician awareness, access, and advocacy regarding minimally invasive image-guided procedures.

Kevin Kelley

BioAs a neuroscientist and psychiatrist, I am motivated by how little we understand about the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders and hope that further knowledge will help to alleviate the ongoing distress of many of our patients. My research program leverages computational genomics, human brain cellular models, and molecular neuroscience techniques to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human brain development and how dysfunction in these processes lead to psychiatric disorders.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory tries to find out how pharmacologic agents used in the practice of anesthesia (general anesthetic and analgesic agents) lead to therapeutically desireable endpoints including unconsciousness, immobility and absence of pain. The old idea that general anesthetics are uniformly non-specific "membrane stabilizers" is giving way to a new realization that these agents exert specific actions on particular ion channels and intracellular signalling systems.

BioHeather has been part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford since 2002. She directly manages appointment matters related to Professoriate faculty and supervises a team of faculty affairs administrators who manage appointment matters for faculty on the Clinician Educator line and other faculty appointment lines in the Department. Further responsibilities include supervision of medical education team members and contributions to strategic planning and development of new departmental initiatives. Prior to her current work in faculty affairs, Heather was as a clinical research manager in the Stanford Depression Research Center and the Stanford Women’s Wellness Clinic. She has published 40+ research articles in psychiatry and neuroscience journals. Her education includes a Master of Science in Psychology, as well as a Master of Arts in Social Psychology.

Vanessa Kennedy

BioDr. Kennedy is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of myeloid malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myelofibrosis (MF). She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kennedy's research focuses on the use of clinical informatics and bioinformatics in understanding cancer biology and improving patient outcomes. She is also actively involved in interventional clinical trials. Her work has been supported by grant funding from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Foundation. -

BioThe management of inflammatory bowel disease continues to evolve, with the introduction of biologic and small molecule therapies and new goals of treatment, with an emphasis on healing the bowel. My career goal since my graduation from IBD fellowship in 2012 has been to improve the outcomes and quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In line with these goals, my research has focused investigating new noninvasive diagnostic test, finding factors early in the disease course that might predict a more aggressive disease course and need for different therapies, and investigating new promising effective medications with less side effects.

Timothy Keyes

MSTP StudentBioTimothy is an MD/PhD student studying cancer biology and biomedical informatics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a joint member of Kara Davis's laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics and Garry Nolan's Laboratory in the Department of Pathology.
As a biomedical data scientist, Timothy's research focuses on the application of machine learning to single-cell data analysis in the context of pediatric leukemia. Through the use of emerging, high-throughout single-cell technologies such as mass cytometry and sequence-based cytometry, Timothy's research is designed to build predictive models of patient outcomes - such as relapse or minimal residual disease (MRD) - at the point of diagnosis. To do so, he uses a variety of computational tools including generalized linear models, clustering, and deep learning. In addition, his work prioritizes constructing easy-to-use, highly-reproducible data analysis pipelines that can be shared as open-source tools for the scientific community.
Outside of science, Timothy has a longstanding interest in human rights and social justice work among members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community. He currently serves as the resident data scientist for the Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ medicals students in medical schools across the United States. As a data scientist at MSPA, Timothy analyzes and visualizes data to guide MSPA's strategic decision-making as well as for academic publication. He also advises and mentors other student members of MSPA performing data analysis in Python and R.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Timothy has received several institutional and national award for both research and advocacy. These include a National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the National Cancer Institute, a Junior Leadership Award from the Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) LGBT Workforce, Stanford Medicine’s Integrated Strategic Plan Star Award, and a Point Foundation Scholarship. -
Khizer Khaderi MD, MPH

BioDr. Khizer Khaderi is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University. Khaderi is the Founding Director of the Stanford Human Perception Laboratory (HPL) and the Stanford Vision Performance Center (VPC). He also serves as faculty at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI and the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance (HPA)
Khaderi is a renowned Neuro-Ophthalmic surgeon, technologist and futurist. Dr. Khaderi is pioneering the field of Symbiotics, defined as the convergence of human science + computer science to design and develop human-centric technologies. Khaderi has extensive domain expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), spatial computing (virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MxR)), wearables, gaming, IoT, Web3, applied neuroscience, human factors, and human-machine interfaces/interaction. His research interests include developing personalized human intelligent systems based on the human brain and sensory systems, developing technologies to optimize human performance, and combining biological and computational principles to expand our capabilities in research, clinical practice, and everyday life. Dr. Khaderi's approach to advance research interests and develop practical applications for everyday use is building technology, companies and collaborative partnerships across academia and industry.
Dr. Khaderi’s experience across industry sectors include consumer electronics, gaming, retail, life science, sports/Esports health care, Pharma, e-commerce, to name a few. He has developed novel technologies in these areas, and generated multiple invention patents. Selected as a “40 under 40”, he contributed to President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology regarding vision technology and the aging population. He also advises multiple companies, venture firms and organizations including the Global Esports Federation, Magic Leap, Riot Games, Intel, Activision, Unity, Epic Games, Google, FB, Microsoft, Apple, NBA, Aerie Pharma, the World Health Organization, and the World Bank. -
Ali Raza Khaki, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Khaki is a medical oncologist and clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
In his clinical practice, he treats patients with all forms of genitourinary cancer, including kidney, bladder, prostate, and testicular. He also regularly attends on the inpatient oncology service at Stanford Hospital.
With each patient, he is devoted to providing exceptional, humanistic care and has been recognized throughout his career for his humanism. As a medical student, he was named to the national Gold Humanism Honor Society and he received the Reza Gandjei Humanism Award as a medical resident at UCSF.
His research interests include novel therapies for genitourinary cancers, with a focus on urothelial cancer outcomes. He also has studied health care utilization and costs for end-of-life care of cancer patients.
Dr. Khaki has earned honors and recognition from the American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, Conquer Cancer Foundation, and other organizations.
He has authored numerous articles on topics such as immunotherapy for urothelial cancer, management of cancer patients with COVID-19, and utilization of end-of-life care by cancer patients. In addition, he is an editor for HemOnc.org and theMednet, a physician-only online community where members share clinical questions and answers. -
Aziz Khan
Sr. Staff Scientist, Stanford Cancer Institute Core
BioAziz Khan is a staff scientist at the Stanford Cancer Institute, where he develops reproducible pipelines and machine learning methods for integrative analysis of multi-omics data at bulk and single-cell resolution to understand tumor evolution and chromatin regulatory dynamics of tumor growth.
Aziz completed his PhD in Bioinformatics at Tsinghua University, China in 2016 followed by a three year postdoctoral training at the University of Oslo, Norway. During PhD and Postdoc his primary research emphasis was on regulatory genomics and epigenomics. He developed computational methods, tools, and resources to understand the (epi)genomic control of gene regulation in development and disease.
Apart from research, he is advocating for open science, open-source, preprints, and reproducibility in research. He is a contributor for Bioconda and also developed several open-source tools and resources such as JASPAR. He is ASAPbio and eLife Community Ambassador and co-founded ECRcentral (ecrcentral.org), a community initiative for early-career researchers. -
Christina Khan, MD, PhD
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Christina Khan is a pediatric and adult psychiatrist and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She specializes in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, LGBTQ+ health, and physician wellness. Dr. Khan’s training includes doctoral and postdoctoral research training in community and public health, including specialized training in global health and PTSD research and treatment. Her work focuses on addressing health disparities in underserved populations and treating vulnerable and marginalized populations here in the United States and abroad.
At Stanford, she is co-Chief of the Diversity and Cultural Mental Health Section in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and founder and Director of THRIVE, Stanford's LGBTQ+ mental health clinic. She has been working with WellConnect since 2014 addressing burnout, trauma, and secondary trauma in Stanford physicians. Dr. Khan is also a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH) and serves on the CIGH Program Leadership Committee.
Nationally, Dr. Khan serves as Past President of the Association of Women Psychiatrists and as Councilor for the Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities of the American Psychiatric Association. -
Danish Khan
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biochemistry
BioDanish is an accomplished researcher who has been working as a postdoctoral research associate at Prof. Onn Brandman's Lab at the Department of Biochemistry for approximately 3.5 years. His primary area of research revolves around unraveling the intricate mechanisms of eukaryotic protein quality control and stress response pathways. Danish's scientific journey at Stanford began as a post-doc under the supervision of Prof. Georgios Skiniotis where he worked briefly before joining Prof. Onn Brandman's group, motivated by his strong interest in investigating ribosome-associated quality control (RQC) pathways and the fascinating phenomenon of "CAT tails," which involves the addition of amino acids to a protein without an mRNA template.
Motivated by a desire to comprehend how defects in RQC pathways contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases in humans, Danish aspires to develop therapeutic interventions for these conditions. Within the Brandman lab, Danish has achieved many accomplishments: he has a first author preview published in Journal of Cell Biology, a second author paper in the eLife journal and a middle author publication in Nature Communications. Currently, Danish is working on two manuscripts that disclose novel and groundbreaking findings concerning the determinants and consequences of CAT tailing in eukaryotes. At Stanford, Danish was awarded the Dean's Fellowship (Bernard Cohen Post Doctoral Fellowship Fund) and Mikitani Cancer Research Fellowship.
Prior to his time at Stanford, Danish earned his PhD from Texas A&M University at College Station, TX. During his doctoral studies, he delved into the chemical inhibition of a lipid signaling protein, leading to the discovery of a remarkable heme-binding lipid transfer protein. Danish's exceptional work during his graduate school tenure resulted in the publication of three first-author papers in renowned journals such as eLife, Cell Chemical Biology, and the Journal of Lipid Research. Additionally, he made valuable contributions as a middle author to five additional papers. Danish's incredible productivity at Texas A&M was recognized by the 'John Mack Prescott Award For Outstanding Research'.
Danish's academic journey commenced with a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata (University of Calcutta), India where he ranked second in college and fourth in university. He then obtained his Master's degree in Biotechnology from Banaras Hindu University in India on Government of India's DBT Fellowship having obtained an All India Rank of 94. Outside of his scientific pursuits, Danish harbors an interest in law and the intersection between law and technology, often immersing himself in related literature. -

Saad A. Khan, MD

BioDr. Khan is a fellowship-trained cancer specialist with board certification in oncology and hematology. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology.
Dr. Khan focuses on the treatment of head and neck cancers, advanced thyroid cancers, and neuroendocrine tumors. He recognizes the broad effects of these conditions on daily living and aims to develop personalized, comprehensive treatment plans that optimize health and quality of life.
Dr. Khan’s research interests include therapeutic clinical trials as well as ways to reduce toxicities that some patients may experience when receiving cancer treatment. His research activities include ongoing clinical trials of targeted and immune therapy for aggressive thyroid cancer.
He has published numerous articles on his research discoveries in peer-reviewed journals such as the JAMA Oncology, Investigational New Drugs, and others. Topics include new drug treatments for small cell lung cancer and for cancers of the head and neck, racial and gender disparities in certain types of cancer, and management of the potentially toxic effects of cancer therapies.
Dr. Khan is a member of the NRG Head and Neck Committee. NRG brings together internationally recognized groups (the first words in their names form the acronym “NRG”) to conduct cancer clinical research and share study results. The objective is to inform clinical decision making and healthcare policy worldwide.
Dr. Khan is a member of the ECOG Head and Neck Core and Thoracic Committees. ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) is part of one of the five groups of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) Program.
He also is a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Central IRB for Early Phase Clinical Trials.
When not providing patient care or conducting research, Dr. Khan enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and relaxing at the beach. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe work in epithelial tissue as a model system to study stem cell biology, cancer and new molecular therapeutics. Epithelia cover external and internal body surfaces and undergo constant self-renewal while responding to diverse environmental stimuli. Epithelial homeostasis precisely balances stem cell-sustained proliferation and differentiation-associated cell death, a balance which is lost in many human diseases, including cancer, 90% of which arise in epithelial tissues.

Sarita Khemani

BioDr. Sarita Khemani is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and a Neurosurgery Hospital Medicine physician. Her clinical focus is preventing and managing medical complications in hospitalized neurosurgical patients in the postoperative setting. Her interests include the intersection of medicine and technology to optimize a healthy lifespan.
Dr. Khemani is passionate about education and has served as Director of perioperative medicine rotations for Stanford medicine residents, medical students, and physician assistant students. She is the recipient of Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Khemani is also the founder and co-director of Stanford Medicine Clinical Summer Internship, a globally recognized program for premed students. The program provides numerous scholarships to minority/underrepresented students to empower future leaders in medicine.
Dr. Khemani has been an invited speaker at various medical conferences and meetings. In addition, she was invited to speak at the Stanford Neurosurgery Grand Rounds and give the keynote speech at the Stanford Physician Assistant student graduation ceremony. She has appeared as a guest on various media outlets in the US and on international television.
Dr. Khemani is a member of the American College of Physicians and currently serves on the Stanford Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Hospital Medicine Wellness Committee.
