Rosita Primavera
Basic Life Research Scientist, Rad/Pediatric Radiology
BioDr. Rosita Primavera is a Basic Life Research Scientist at Stanford University in the Department of Radiology/Pediatric Radiology. She has a MD in chemistry and pharmaceutical technology and a PhD degree in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnologies. Dr. Primavera has documented experience on the development of nano- and micro-drug delivery systems (DDS) as well as 3D-platforms for the treatment of different diseases. She has trained in developing DDS and 3D-platforms with different materials (synthetic or natural) and employing different techniques (e.g. top/down or bottom/up fabrication). In the last few years, her research interests are focused primarily on diabetes. She has been extensively trained on how to handle and process pancreatic islets from different origins (mouse, rat and human) and she has excellent knowledge and skills to manage and perform in vitro and in vivo experiments involving diabetic animals. She is currently working on the realization of on-commanded system mimicking pancreatic islet function; and both the role of 3D-bioscaffold in pancreatic islet transplantation and the role of the mesenchymal stem cell in the setting of diabetes using novel cellular approaches (i.e. co-transplantation with islets alone or within novel bioscaffolds).

Lance Prince
Philip Sunshine, MD, Professor of Neonatology
BioLawrence (Lance) S. Prince, MD, PhD, is the Division Chief for Neonatal and Developmental Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Prince was previously a Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Neonatology at the University of California, San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego.
Dr. Prince has a long and distinguished career mentoring clinical and scientific trainees and students, many of whom have gone on to establish their own successful careers as academic physician investigators. As a physician scientist, Dr. Prince leads a basic science laboratory focusing on the mechanisms regulating developmental immunology and lung injury and repair. Dr. Prince received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of Miami, an MD/PhD with a focus in Cell Biology from University of Alabama at Birmingham, and postdoctoral fellowship, Pediatrics residency, and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship training at the University of Iowa. Before arriving in California, Dr. Prince was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Prince’s research interests include the molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling lung development and the maturation of the fetal and neonatal immune systems. He has a particular clinical interest in managing and treating neonatal lung diseases, especially bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in babies born extremely preterm. Dr. Prince’s research team focuses primarily on the development of innate immunity during fetal life as it impacts health and disease in preterm infants. The laboratory is investigating how microbes including Group B streptococcus exploit the unique features of neonatal macrophages to avoid immune detection and cause disease, as well as leading a number of clinical and translational investigations. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of our research exploits the power of yeast as an experimentally tractable model eukaryote to investigate fundamental problems in cell and developmental biology such as the mechanisms of cell polarization and cytokinesis. In another project, we are developing the small sea anemone Aiptasia as a model system for study of the molecular and cellular biology of dinoflagellate-cnidarian symbiosis, which is critical for the survival of most corals but still very poorly understood.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are interested in a broad range of problems at the interface of genomics and evolutionary biology. One current focus of the lab is in understanding how genetic variation impacts gene regulation and complex traits. We also have long-term interests in using genetic data to learn about population structure, history and adaptation, especially in humans.

Monika Priyadarshini

BioI obtained my PhD from the Biological and Environmental Science Division at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia) in 2021. I had the opportunity to work with Christian Frøkjær-Jensen on a fascinating research project focusing on the epigenetic regulation of germline genes and the transgenerational inheritance of silencing in C. elegans.
My passion lies in the field of epigenetics, synthetic and molecular biology, and protein biochemistry. I am deeply intrigued by the intricacies of genome organization and am dedicated to unraveling the "rules" that govern it. Additionally, I'm committed to dissecting the molecular and structural changes that take place within chromatin. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research interest is in the epidemiology, pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment of infections in children. Much of this research has focused on viral infections, especially those caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). I have conducted a number of studies concerned with the epidemiology of HSV-2 infections in pregnant women, their partners, and neonates.

Silvina Pugliese, MD

BioSilvina Pugliese, M.D., is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Attending Physician at the Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center and Stanford Cancer Institute. She attended medical school at Boston University and completed her residency at Loma Linda, serving as Chief Resident in her final year. Dr. Pugliese practices Supportive Dermato-Oncology (SDO) at the Stanford main campus and also launched the South Bay Cancer Center's SDO Clinic in 2015. She is interested in the management of cutaneous complications associated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, organ transplantation, and their impact on patient quality of life.

Elisabetta Viani Puglisi
Associate Professor (Research) of Structural Biology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsViral infections and subsequent host response depend on multiple RNA-protein interaction. My research focuses on the structural and functional characterization of RNA-protein complexes involved in viral infection. Current research aims to understand how the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) initiates its replication upon host infection. We use NMR spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography to study the structure of the initiation complex, formed by a host tRNA and HIV genomic RNA, coupled with biochemical and biophysical methods to understand functional properties. The goal of this research is to gain a molecular view of HIV replication initiation, and use this information to develop new therapeutic approaches to combat HIV.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Puglisi group investigates the role of RNA in cellular processes and disease. We investigate dynamics using single-molecule approaches. Our goal is a unified picture of structure, dynamics and function. We are currently focused on the mechanism and regulation of translation, and the role of RNA in viral infections. A long-term goal is to target processes involving RNA with novel therapeutic strategies.

Benjamin Pulli, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor (By courtesy), NeurosurgeryBioDr. Pulli is a dual fellowship trained diagnostic and interventional neuroradiologist with a focus on vascular disorders of the brain, head, neck, and spine. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Radiology, Neuroradiology Division.
Having grown up in Austria, Dr. Pulli moved to the US after completing medical school in Innsbruck, Austria. He completed post-doctoral research training in stroke imaging in the Division of Neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as in experimental molecular imaging techniques of neuroinflammatory disorders at the Center for Systems Biology of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
He completed residency training in Radiology and fellowship training in Diagnostic Neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He then completed a second fellowship in interventional neuroradiology/neurointerventional surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
After having graduated from fellowship, Dr. Pulli then spent more than a year practicing Interventional Neuroradiology at Pacific Neuroscience Institute in Los Angeles. He employs state-of-the-art minimally invasive endovascular and percutaneous surgical techniques to treat patients with brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulas, carotid artery stenosis, acute stroke, chronic subdural hematoma, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, vascular tumors, and chronic back pain.
His research focuses on advanced imaging techniques for acute ischemic stroke and other neurovascular diseases. He has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and received scientific grants from institutions such as the Radiological Society of North America and the Ernst Schering Foundation. In addition, he has made invited presentations to his peers at meetings of organizations such as the American Society of Neuroradiology, Radiological Society of North American, European Congress of Radiology, and Western Neuroradiological Society.
He is a member of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery. -

Patrick Lee Purdon

BioMy research integrates neuroimaging, biomedical signal processing, and the systems neuroscience of general anesthesia and sedation.
My group conducts human studies of anesthesia-induced unconsciousness, using a variety of techniques including multimodal neuroimaging, high-density EEG, and invasive neurophysiological recordings used to diagnose medically refractory epilepsy. We also develop novel methods in neuroimaging and biomedical signal processing to support these studies, as well as methods for monitoring level of consciousness under general anesthesia using EEG.
