Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research focuses on understanding how immune responses initiate and accelerate synaptic and neuronal injury in age-related neurodegeneration, including models of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. We also focus on the role of immune responses in aggravating brain injury in models of stroke. Our goal is the identification of critical immune pathways that function in neurologic disorders and that can be targeted to elicit disease modifying effects.

Steven Z. Chao

Staff, Neurology ResearchBioDr. Steven Chao graduated from UCLA in biochemistry with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude. He then finished his combined MD/PhD training program from Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University with AOA Honors. Following his neurology residency at Stanford, he continued with a behavior neurology fellowship training at UCSF Memory and Aging Center, where he started research in dementia.
Currently, He serves as a staff neurologist at the Palo Alto VA and with an appointment at the Stanford Department of Neurology as a clinical professor (affiliated). His current research interest is in early imaging diagnosis of dementia and early treatment/prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive treatment in traumatic brain injury, and alternative treatments for headache.
Community and academic education about dementia and cognitive health has always been his passion, and he continues to publish research articles and book chapters to support clinical education. -

On Leave from 02/16/2025 To 02/15/2026Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are interested in the neuronal mechanisms that underlie synchronous oscillatory activity in the thalamus, cortex and the massively interconnected thalamocortical system. Such oscillations are related to cognitive processes, normal sleep activities and certain forms of epilepsy. Our approach is an analysis of the discrete components (cells, synapses, microcircuits) that make up thalamic and cortical circuits, and reconstitution of components into in silico computational networks.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe primary aim of my lab is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases by developing translational molecular imaging agents for visualizing neuroimmune interactions underlying conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.
