Iram Ahmad, MD, MME

BioDr. Iram Ahmad received her MD from the University of Michigan Medical School. She then completed Otolaryngology residency program at the University of Iowa. At Iowa, she was an NIH- sponsored T32 research resident in the Department of Otolaryngology. During her residency training she also gained expertise in education and graduated with a Master in Medical Education from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. After residency, Dr. Ahmad continued at Iowa for her fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology.
Dr. Ahmad is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery in the Pediatric Division. Her clinical expertise is in Pediatric Otology and hearing loss. She is focused on children with hearing loss, cochlear implantation, cholesteatoma, and general pediatric Otolaryngology. Her research interests are in children with congenital hearing loss and microstructure changes of the brain. -

Alyssa Burgart (she/her)

Clinical Associate Professor (By courtesy), PediatricsBioDr. Alyssa Burgart is a unique figure in the fields of pediatric anesthesiology and bioethics, with double board certification in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology and over 20 years of experience in bioethics. Her role as a clinical associate professor at Stanford University in Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, and by courtesy in Pediatrics, underscores her interdisciplinary approach. This is further evidenced by her affiliation with the Stanford Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in the School of Humanities and Sciences.
Dr. Burgart holds numerous leadership positions, including Associate Director of Pediatric Bioethics at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics, Medical Director of Ethics for the Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, and physician co-chair of the Stanford Children’s Ethics Committee. She actively supports the Program in Medical Humanities and the Arts and is the Associate Director for Symposium. In the undergraduate school, she teaches a course called One in Five: The Law, Politics, and Policy of Campus Sexual Assault.
Dr. Burgart is an expert in difficult conversations and skillfully mediating complex choices with families and healthcare providers. She speaks nationally on bioethics, relationship-centered care, trauma-informed care, disability justice, gender equity, and reproductive justice issues.
Dr. Burgart's dedication to pediatric trauma mitigation is unwavering. She is committed to finding the most successful way for each child to interact with the anesthesia team, ensuring an overall positive experience and reducing the risk of medical trauma. She advocates specifically for children with unique needs, such as those with unique sensory integration needs. Her clinical focus within pediatric anesthesiology is on abdominal transplant anesthesiology, specifically on children weighing less than 10 kilograms (22 lbs).
Her current research projects are grounded in the just delivery of care: pediatric justice (especially pediatric algorithmic bias), mitigating moral distress and moral injury, reproductive care access (including anesthesiologists as barriers to access), and workplace violence prevention.
Dr. Burgart's influence in the field of bioethics extends beyond her clinical and academic roles. As an associate editor and digital media editor at the American Journal of Bioethics, her work is instrumental in shaping the discourse on ethical healthcare practices. Her writing, featured in JAMA, The Washington Post, USA Today, Slate, and Ms. Magazine, and her newsletter, Poppies & Propofol, are all part of her mission to enhance public education on bioethics issues in the news. She frequently engages with journalists to ensure accurate and comprehensive reporting on complex medical ethics issues. -
Andres Cardenas

BioI am an environmental epidemiologist and serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Stanford University. I joined the faculty at Stanford School of Medicine in 2022.
My research focuses on characterizing molecular and epigenetic biomarkers and the extent to which these alterations contribute to disease risk throughout the life course. My group utilizes computational approaches to investigate environmental chemical mixtures, biological aging markers and fetal epigenetic programming. We have several studies looking at chemical and non-chemical stressors in early-life and subsequent health including; neurodevelopment, obesity and immune function.
My research examines the intersection of chemical and social environments in shaping health and disease. -
Alan G. Cheng, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsActive Wnt signaling maintains somatic stem cells in many organ systems. Using Wnt target genes as markers, we have characterized distinct cell populations with stem cell behavior in the inner ear, an organ thought to be terminally differentiated. Ongoing work focuses on delineating the developing significance of these putative stem/progenitor cells and their behavior after damage.

He completed his medical school and residency training at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a pediatric dermatology fellowship at UCSF. Dr. Chu's clinical interests encompass a wide array of topics within pediatric dermatology, including vascular tumors and malformations, inflammatory skin diseases, dermato-oncology, neonatal dermatology, and procedural dermatology.

Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, I completed a fellowship in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, From an academic standpoint, my current research focuses include: Gynecologic care for Oncology Survivors including Onco-Fertility and vulvovaginal graft-versus-host disease; gynecologic care of patients with Anorectal Malformations; Differences of Sex Development, Intersex conditions, and reproductive tract differences; and surgical care in pediatric gynecology. -

Philip Andrew Fisher

BioDr. Philip Fisher is the Diana Chen Professor of Early Childhood Learning in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford. His research, which has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1999, focuses on developing and evaluating scalable early childhood interventions in communities, and on translating scientific knowledge regarding healthy development under conditions of adversity for use in social policy and programs. He is particularly interested in the effects of early stressful experiences on children's neurobiological and psychological development, and in prevention and treatment programs for improving children's functioning in areas such as relationships with caregivers and peers, social-emotional development, and academic achievement. He is currently the lead investigator in the ongoing RAPID-EC project, a national survey on the well-being of households with young children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Fisher is also interested in the brain's plasticity in the context of therapeutic interventions. He is the developer of a number of widely implemented evidence-based interventions for supporting healthy child development in the context of social and economic adversity, including Treatment Foster Care Oregon for Preschoolers (TFCO-P), Kids in Transition to School (KITS), and Filming Interactions to Nurture Development (FIND). He has published over 200 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals. He is the recipient of the 2012 Society for Prevention Research Translational Science Award, and a 2019 Fellow of the American Psychological Society.

Susy Jeng

Dr. Jeng received her A.B. at Harvard College and M.D. at the University of California, San Diego. She completed her pediatrics residency at University of California, San Francisco and is board-certified in pediatrics. After practicing general pediatrics for two years, she returned to UCSF for neurology residency. Upon completion of her residencies, she joined the faculty at Stanford as a general child neurologist with a special interest in medical education. She is the site director for the Stanford medical student neurology clerkship and the pediatric neurology liaison to the Stanford pediatrics residency program.

Varvara A. Kirchner

BioDr. Kirchner completed her medical school, surgical residency and multi-organ transplant fellowship in adult and pediatric liver, pancreas, kidney transplantation and total pancreatectomy with islet auto-transplantation at the University of Minnesota. She underwent further training in living donor liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the Asan Medical Center, Seoul, South Korea. Her clinical practice involves living and deceased donor liver and kidney transplantation in adult and pediatric patients as well as total pancreatectomy with islet auto-transplantation for patients with chronic and acute recurrent pancreatitis. She currently serves as Surgical Director of the Islet Cell Auto-Transplant at Stanford Children’s and Associate Director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program at the Division of Abdominal Transplantation. Dr. Kirchner’s research focuses on the biology of aging, cellular and solid organ transplantation. Her specific interests are in auto-islet transplantation, iPSC-derived hepatocyte therapies and liver regeneration. Dr. Kirchner's research on the impact of donor age on generation of iPSC-derived hepatocyte-like cells is supported by the NIA K08 Faculty Development Award. She is an active member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the International Liver Transplantation Society.

Juliet Klasing Knowles

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Knowles lab studies how white matter structure changes in different forms of epilepsy, and how aberrant white matter structure, in turn, shapes neuronal network function. In mouse models, we use a variety of innovative tools including neurophysiology, quantitative EEG, behavior, histological measures of white matter structure and MR imaging. We also conduct clinical research to study white matter abnormalities in children with epilepsy.

Euna Koo, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor (By courtesy), PediatricsBioDr. Koo is an ophthalmologist specializing in pediatric ophthalmology, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and adult strabismus. She received her ophthalmology training at UC San Francisco and then her fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at Boston Children's Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. She has been board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 2016. Her practice reflects her clinical interests in pediatric ophthalmology (strabismus, amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, and ROP) and in adult strabismus.
She utilizes Botox in management of adult and pediatric strabismus. She also uses hidden adjustable sutures in children and adults to optimize alignment of eyes with surgery. Muscles can be adjusted up to 7-10 days after surgery.
She also has an interest in teaching medical students and residents and improving surgical training. -
Scott R. Lambert, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research has focused on improving the visual outcomes of children with congenital cataracts. I organized a randomized clinical trial, the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study to compare the visual outcomes of infants optically corrected with a contact lens vs. an intraocular lens after unilateral cataract surgery. A second area of research has been ocular growth after cataract surgery.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe have focused our research on the development of novel therapies and innovative assessment and diagnostic imaging technologies for retinal vascular and ocular inflammatory disorders, specifically diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and uveitis. Building on our initial work describing the role of hypoxia and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME), We have become interested in the biochemical mechanisms that would presumably lead to DME. During the past decade, our research has contributed to the body of evidences that defines the important role of anti-VEGF therapies in DME and AMD, as well as the role of the mTOR pathway and various interleukins in the pathogenesis of uveitis.
We have launched a productive and well-funded clinical research program while at the same time providing clinical care to patients with uveitis and retinal vascular diseases and fulfilling significant teaching and administrative assignments. We have established a number of key collaborators both within and outside the institutions. In addition, we have also established Center in Baltimore and now in Silicon Valley, which has excelled in conducting proof-of concept, early-phase multi-center clinical trials and studies, exploring the clinical disease manifestations and the efficacy of various pharmacologic agents in retinal, uveitic, and ocular inflammatory disorders. -
