Janene Fuerch
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Neonatology
BioJanene H. Fuerch, MD is a Clinical Professor of Neonatology at Stanford University Medical Center, as well as an innovator, educator, researcher and physician entrepreneur. She has an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from Brown University and a medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo. At Stanford University she completed a pediatrics residency, neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship and the Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship.
She is also Assistant Director of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Program at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Impact1 where she mentors and advises new entrepreneurs through all aspects of medical device development, from identifying clinical needs to commercialization. Her specific areas of investigational interest include the development and commercialization process of neonatal, pediatric and maternal health medical devices as well as the utilization of a simulated environment to develop and test medical devices. She is a national leader in neonatal resuscitation, ECMO, device development and has been an AHRQ and FDA funded investigator. But her work extends outside of the academic realm to industry having co-founded EMME (acquired by Simple Health 2022) an award-winning reproductive health company, medical director for Novonate (acquired by Laborie 2023) a neonatal umbilical catheter securement company and notable consultant for Vitara (EXTEND - artificial environment to decrease complications of prematurity), and Avanos™. Janene is passionate about improving the health of children and newborns through medical device innovation and research. -
Xavier Gaeta MD PhD

BioDr. Xavier Gaeta is an Instructor in the division of Pediatric Nephrology and a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Calvin J. Kuo. His research interests include using three-dimensional human kidney organoids and genetic engineering techniques to model human kidney disease, kidney development, and cancer in vitro.

Fellow in Pediatrics - CardiologyBioFrancisco earned his undergraduate degree in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology from Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude. He subsequently completed his MD/PhD at Stanford University School of Medicine. During his doctoral training under the mentorship of Dr. Sean Wu, Francisco published one of the first comprehensive maps of human cardiac cell development using pluripotent stem cell-based models. His research contributed to the development of machine learning tools and genetic tracing systems that identified and characterized human left ventricular cardiomyocytes in vitro, enabling the modeling of left ventricular development in hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Francisco has authored multiple first-author publications and has been awarded funding from both internal sources and the NIH (F30, T32). He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the prestigious Harold Weintraub Award, and has presented his research at various national conferences. As part of the accelerated research pathway at Stanford, Francisco is focused on the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying heart failure and heart development in congenital heart disease, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutics for pediatric patients.

Current Role at StanfordRodrigo Galindo manages technology and supports research and education for simulation programs at the Center for Advanced Pediatric & Perinatal Education (CAPE) (http://cape.stanford.edu) within the School of Medicine/Pediatrics/Neonatology division. He also assists with collaborative quality improvement initiatives between CAPE and the departments of Labor & Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Obstetrics at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

Hayley Gans
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe focus of my laboratory is the immune response to viral vaccines evaluating the ontogeny of responses in infants and limitations in immunocompromised hosts. We have studied responses to an early two-dose measles immunization, one versus 2 doses of varicella immunization, and polio vaccine in preterm versus term infants. Other active areas of research include measles and varicella immunity in HIV infected individuals, and transplant recipients.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe advent of high dimensional flow cytometry has revolutionized our ability to study and visualize the human immune system. Our group combines high parameter mass cytometry (a.k.a Cytometry by Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry, CyTOF), with advanced bio-computational methods to study how the human immune system responds and adapts to acute physiological perturbations. The laboratory currently focuses on two clinical scenarios: surgical trauma and pregnancy.

BioOur lab works at the interface of biotechnology, computational biology, cellular biology, and clinical medicine to develop and apply new tools for characterizing genetic variation across single cells within a tissue with unparalleled sensitivity and accuracy. We are focused on applying these technologies to study cancer clonal evolution while patients are undergoing treatment with the aim of identifying cancer clonotypes that are associated with resistance to specific drugs so as to better understand and predict treatment response. We are also applying these methods to understand how more virulent pathogens emerge from a population of bacteria or viruses with an emphasis on developing a deeper understanding of how antibiotic resistance develops.
