Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAstrocytes, microglia and neurons interact, and have unique vulnerabilities to injury based on their patterns of gene expression and their functional roles. We focus on the cellular and molecular basis of brain cell injury in stroke. We study the effects of altering miRNA expression, altering levels of heat shock and cell death regulatory proteins. Our goal is to improve outcome by improving mitochondrial function and brain cell survival, and reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

BioAlex Gileles-Hillel, MD, ATSF, is a pediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine physician at Hadassah Medical Center and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He directs the Neonatal Pulmonology Service at Hadassah and is a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University for 2026–27. His clinical interests include pediatric sleep-disordered breathing, chronic lung disease of prematurity, asthma, cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, and complex respiratory disorders in infants and children.
Dr. Gileles-Hillel completed his medical training, pediatric residency, and pediatric pulmonology fellowship at the Hebrew University–Hadassah Medical Center. He then completed advanced fellowship training in sleep medicine at the University of Chicago under David Gozal, followed by postdoctoral training in vascular biology at the Hebrew University. He is the founder and director of the Gileles Lab, where his group investigates the mechanisms and consequences of obstructive sleep apnea and intermittent hypoxia, including cardiometabolic dysfunction, vascular injury, and cancer progression. The lab also develops human-derived airway organoid models to study asthma, cystic fibrosis, and primary ciliary dyskinesia, with the goal of translating mechanistic insights into improved care for children with respiratory disease.
