Vanessa Kennedy
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy)
BioDr. Kennedy is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of myeloid malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myelofibrosis (MF). She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kennedy's research focuses on the use of clinical informatics and bioinformatics in understanding cancer biology and improving patient outcomes. BioWayne Kepner, PhD, MPH is a public health researcher whose scholarship focuses on health disparities and substance use among vulnerable populations. Dr. Kepner is currently a T-32 Post-doctoral Fellowship in Pain and Substance Use at Stanford University's School of Medicine, where he will continue his research under the mentorship of Dr. Keith Humphreys and Dr. Mark McGovern.
Dr. Kepner received his doctoral degree from the Joint Doctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Research on Substance Use at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego. His research focused on substance use disorders, health services utilization, and geospatial analysis of health data, with a particular emphasis on older adult populations. Dr. Kepner has extensive experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, having conducted interviews with older adults on cannabis use and analyzed large-scale electronic health records. He has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications on topics ranging from cannabis use trends to emergency department utilization for substance-related diagnoses. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Kepner is committed to community engagement, co-founding Aztecs For Recovery, a collegiate recovery program at SDSU. -

Andreas Kerschbaumer
Postdoctoral Scholar, Immunology and Rheumatology
BioDr. Andreas Kerschbaumer is a postdoctoral scholar in the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University, conducting research in the Robinson and Khatri Labs. His work integrates clinical rheumatology with computational and systems immunology, applying meta-analytic techniques on transcriptomic datasets to uncover mechanisms of autoimmunity and improve therapeutic strategies in rheumatology.
He trained in internal medicine and rheumatology at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Medicine III, Division of Rheumatology, where he also completed his PhD under Professors Smolen and Aletaha on treatment outcomes in inflammatory arthritis, followed by his habilitation on strategies to optimize the interpretation of clinical trial data in rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis.
Dr. Kerschbaumer has been actively engaged with the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR), contributing as Fellow, Methodologist, and Co-Methodologist to multiple international taskforces, including the 2019, 2022, and 2025 rheumatoid arthritis recommendations and the 2019 and 2023 psoriatic arthritis recommendations. He is currently a member of the EULAR Quality of Care Committee and serves as Co-Abstract Chair of the ACR Rheumatoid Arthritis abstract committee. -

BioThe management of inflammatory bowel disease continues to evolve, with the introduction of biologic and small molecule therapies and new goals of treatment, with an emphasis on healing the bowel. My career goal since my graduation from IBD fellowship in 2012 has been to improve the outcomes and quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In line with these goals, my research has focused investigating new noninvasive diagnostic test, finding factors early in the disease course that might predict a more aggressive disease course and need for different therapies, and investigating new promising effective medications with less side effects.

Timothy Keyes

MSTP StudentBioTimothy is an MD/PhD student studying cancer biology and biomedical informatics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a joint member of Kara Davis's laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics and Garry Nolan's Laboratory in the Department of Pathology.
As a biomedical data scientist, Timothy's research focuses on the application of machine learning to single-cell data analysis in the context of pediatric leukemia. Through the use of emerging, high-throughout single-cell technologies such as mass cytometry and sequence-based cytometry, Timothy's research is designed to build predictive models of patient outcomes - such as relapse or minimal residual disease (MRD) - at the point of diagnosis. To do so, he uses a variety of computational tools including generalized linear models, clustering, and deep learning. In addition, his work prioritizes constructing easy-to-use, highly-reproducible data analysis pipelines that can be shared as open-source tools for the scientific community.
Outside of science, Timothy has a longstanding interest in human rights and social justice work among members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community. He currently serves as the resident data scientist for the Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ medicals students in medical schools across the United States. As a data scientist at MSPA, Timothy analyzes and visualizes data to guide MSPA's strategic decision-making as well as for academic publication. He also advises and mentors other student members of MSPA performing data analysis in Python and R.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Timothy has received several institutional and national award for both research and advocacy. These include a National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the National Cancer Institute, a Junior Leadership Award from the Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) LGBT Workforce, Stanford Medicine’s Integrated Strategic Plan Star Award, and a Point Foundation Scholarship. -

BioDr. Khizer Khaderi is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University. Khaderi is a renowned Neuro-Ophthalmic surgeon, technologist and futurist. Dr. Khaderi is pioneering the field of Symbiotics, defined as the convergence of human science + computer science. Khaderi developed the discipline of Symbiotics following initial interest from CS students interested in his research at the Stanford Human Perception Lab. Symbiotics involves a deep understanding in the principles of human systems and applying these principles computationally, to design and develop the next generation of human-centric technologies, where machines perceive, understand and respond to optimize the human experience. Dr. Khaderi envisions the application of Symbiotic principles as the key to unlocking ambient intelligence.
Khaderi has extensive domain expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), spatial computing (virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MxR)), wearables, gaming, IoT, Web3, applied neuroscience, human factors, and human-machine interfaces/interaction. His research interests include developing personalized human intelligent systems based on the human brain and sensory systems, developing technologies to optimize human performance, and combining biological and computational principles to expand our capabilities in research, clinical practice, and everyday life. Ali Raza Khaki, MD

BioDr. Khaki is a medical oncologist and clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
In his clinical practice, he treats patients with all forms of genitourinary cancer, including kidney, bladder, prostate, and testicular. He also regularly attends on the inpatient oncology service at Stanford Hospital.
With each patient, he is devoted to providing exceptional, humanistic care and has been recognized throughout his career for his humanism. As a medical student, he was named to the national Gold Humanism Honor Society and he received the Reza Gandjei Humanism Award as a medical resident at UCSF.
His research interests include novel therapies for genitourinary cancers, with a focus on urothelial cancer outcomes. He is the site principal investigator for multiple clinical trails investigating new therapies for genitourinary cancers.
Dr. Khaki is also active working clinically in inpatient oncology and is a Unit Based Medical Director for G1, an oncology hospital unit and is the Director of Inpatient Oncology. In this role, he oversees the inpatient oncology teams, works closely with the cancer center to develop new transitions of care pathways from inpatient to outpatient and has co-led an inpatient oncology research group to study quality improvement, care delivery and end-of-life care for patients with cancer.
Dr. Khaki has earned honors and recognition from the American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, Conquer Cancer Foundation, and other organizations.
He has authored numerous articles on topics such as immunotherapy for urothelial cancer, management of cancer patients with COVID-19, and utilization of end-of-life care by cancer patients. In addition, he is an editor for HemOnc.org and theMednet, a physician-only online community where members share clinical questions and answers. -
Christina Khan, MD, PhD
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Christina Khan is a pediatric and adult psychiatrist and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She specializes in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, LGBTQ+ health, and physician wellness. Dr. Khan’s training includes doctoral and postdoctoral research training in community and public health, including specialized training in global health and PTSD research and treatment. Her work focuses on addressing health disparities in underserved populations and treating vulnerable and marginalized populations here in the United States and abroad.
At Stanford, she is co-Chief of the Diversity and Cultural Mental Health Section in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and founder and Director of THRIVE, Stanford's LGBTQ+ mental health clinic. She has been working with WellConnect since 2014 addressing burnout, trauma, and secondary trauma in Stanford physicians. Dr. Khan is also a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH) and serves on the CIGH Program Leadership Committee.
Nationally, Dr. Khan serves as Past President of the Association of Women Psychiatrists and as Councilor for the Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities of the American Psychiatric Association. -

Saad A. Khan, MD

BioDr. Khan is a fellowship-trained cancer specialist with board certification in oncology and hematology. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology.
Dr. Khan focuses on the treatment of head and neck cancers, advanced thyroid cancers, and neuroendocrine tumors. He recognizes the broad effects of these conditions on daily living and aims to develop personalized, comprehensive treatment plans that optimize health and quality of life.
Dr. Khan’s research interests include therapeutic clinical trials as well as ways to reduce toxicities that some patients may experience when receiving cancer treatment. His research activities include ongoing clinical trials of targeted and immune therapy for aggressive thyroid cancer.
He has published numerous articles on his research discoveries in peer-reviewed journals such as the JAMA Oncology, Investigational New Drugs, and others. Topics include new drug treatments for small cell lung cancer and for cancers of the head and neck, racial and gender disparities in certain types of cancer, and management of the potentially toxic effects of cancer therapies.
Dr. Khan is a member of the NRG Head and Neck Committee. NRG brings together internationally recognized groups (the first words in their names form the acronym “NRG”) to conduct cancer clinical research and share study results. The objective is to inform clinical decision making and healthcare policy worldwide.
Dr. Khan is a member of the ECOG Head and Neck Core and Thoracic Committees. ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) is part of one of the five groups of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) Program.
He also is a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Central IRB for Early Phase Clinical Trials.
When not providing patient care or conducting research, Dr. Khan enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and relaxing at the beach. -

Bayan Kharrat

BioDr. Bayan Kharrat is a postdoctoral researcher in the Goins Lab at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she studies the mechanisms governing fate commitment in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in Drosophila, with a focus on identifying key regulatory factors involved in this process.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe work in epithelial tissue as a model system to study stem cell biology, cancer and new molecular therapeutics. Epithelia cover external and internal body surfaces and undergo constant self-renewal while responding to diverse environmental stimuli. Epithelial homeostasis precisely balances stem cell-sustained proliferation and differentiation-associated cell death, a balance which is lost in many human diseases, including cancer, 90% of which arise in epithelial tissues.

Sarita Khemani

BioDr. Sarita Khemani is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and a Hospital Medicine physician specializing in the perioperative care of surgical patients. Her clinical expertise focuses on prevention, early detection and management of medical complications in the perioperative setting. Her broader interests include enhancing cognitive and physical resilience and promoting long-term healthspan.

Cynthia Khoo

BioDr. Khoo serves as the Associate Program Director of Career Development for the Stanford Anesthesia Residency and Co-Director of the Division of Global Health Equity. In her residency role, she leads the Anesthesiology Leadership Pathways at Stanford (ALPS), a comprehensive mentorship initiative spanning advocacy, research, community engagement, global health, innovation, medical education and quality improvement.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s MD-PhD program, Dr. Khoo completed her residency and regional anesthesia fellowship at Stanford. Her global health work focuses on promoting safe, equitable perioperative care through high-tech education, including immersive reality simulations for crisis management in Tanzania and Guyana. She supports bi-directional partnerships that facilitate resident rotations and host international scholars at Stanford. Her current research focuses on enhancing clinical research quality in low-resource settings across Rwanda, Vietnam, Guyana, and Tanzania. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch in this laboratory focuses on problems where deep insights into enzymology and metabolism can be harnessed to improve human health.
For the past two decades, we have studied and engineered enzymatic assembly lines called polyketide synthases that catalyze the biosynthesis of structurally complex and medicinally fascinating antibiotics in bacteria. An example of such an assembly line is found in the erythromycin biosynthetic pathway. Our current focus is on understanding the structure and mechanism of this polyketide synthase. At the same time, we are developing methods to decode the vast and growing number of orphan polyketide assembly lines in the sequence databases.
For more than a decade, we have also investigated the pathogenesis of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine, with the goal of discovering therapies and related management tools for this widespread but overlooked disease. Ongoing efforts focus on understanding the pivotal role of transglutaminase 2 in triggering the inflammatory response to dietary gluten in the celiac intestine. -

Nitasha Khullar, MD

BioDr. Nitasha Khullar is a board-certified, fellowship-trained rheumatologist at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Khullar specializes in caring for people with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that affect the joints, muscles, and immune system. Butrus Khuri-Yakub

BioButrus (Pierre) T. Khuri-Yakub is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He received the BS degree from the American University of Beirut, the MS degree from Dartmouth College, and the Ph.D. degree from Stanford University, all in electrical engineering. His current research interests include medical ultrasound imaging and therapy, ultrasound neuro-stimulation, chemical/biological sensors, gas flow and energy flow sensing, micromachined ultrasonic transducers, and ultrasonic fluid ejectors. He has authored over 600 publications and has been principal inventor or co-inventor of 107 US and international issued patents. He was awarded the Medal of the City of Bordeaux in 1983 for his contributions to Nondestructive Evaluation, the Distinguished Advisor Award of the School of Engineering at Stanford University in 1987, the Distinguished Lecturer Award of the IEEE UFFC society in 1999, a Stanford University Outstanding Inventor Award in 2004, Distinguished Alumnus Award of the School of Engineering of the American University of Beirut in 2005, Stanford Biodesign Certificate of Appreciation for commitment to educate, mentor and inspire Biodesgin Fellows, 2011, and 2011 recipient of IEEE Rayleigh award.

Mathew Kiang

BioI am an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. My research lies at the intersection of computational epidemiology and social epidemiology. Methodologically, my work revolves around combining disparate data sources in epidemiologically meaningful ways. For example, I work with individual-level, non-health data (e.g., GPS, accelerometer, and other sensor data from smartphones), traditional health data (e.g., survey, health systems, or death certificate data), and third-party data (e.g., cellphone providers or ad-tech data). To do this, I use a variety of methods such as joint Bayesian spatial models, traditional epidemiologic models, dynamical models, microsimulation, and demographic analysis. Substantively, my work focuses on socioeconomic and racial/ethnic inequities, substance use, and child health. For example, recently, my work has examined inequities in COVID-19 vaccine distribution, cause-specific excess mortality, and drug poisonings. Other work has examined the impact of changing vaccination rates on the reemergence of infectious diseases and the prevalence of parental death among children.

BioDr. Kibbi is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeon. Her clinical interests include Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer and laser and injectable treatments to combat aging, sun-damaged skin, and other indications. Her research interests include rare skin tumors, challenging lip lesions, non-invasive treatments, such as photodynamic therapy for non-melanoma skin cancer, and cosmetic procedures for acne scars and autoimmune conditions. Her work has appeared at national and international meetings and has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Lancet Oncology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology, Journal of Dermatologic Surgery.
