Donghee Kim, MD, PhD
Social Science Research Scholar, Medicine - Med/Gastroenterology and Hepatology
BioI am clinically trained as a physician specialized in gastroenterology and hepatology. My research has focused on clinical research of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity-related gastrointestinal diseases, focusing on a population-based study. In addition, my research was not only focused on gastroenterology and was expanded to cardiology, endocrinology, and neurology (sleep medicine). I have experience with large epidemiologic cohort studies as well as clinical trials. This work has resulted in over 200 published papers, including major journals such as Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Gut, Journal of Hepatology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, etc. (as the first and corresponding author). These publications have been cited about 7000 times.

Staff, Medicine - Med/Gastroenterology and HepatologyBioMy research interests thus far have focused on immunology, GI cancers, and improving quality of care for patients. I am passionate about understanding the different genetic and lifestyle factors that are involved in GI cancers and other colonic pathology, as well as improving systems of care to better manage the health and improve the outcomes of patients with these diseases. Towards that end, I have been involved in research in Lynch syndrome in order to bridge the gap between our current understanding of cancer risk in this high-risk population and the creation and implementation of guidelines worldwide. I also had the opportunity to work with collaborators in the International Mismatch Repair Consortium at the Department of Colorectal Medicine and Genetics with the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia where I saw firsthand the global efforts in the fight against colorectal cancer. In my current role as a staff gastroenterologist at the VA Palo Alto, I oversee the colorectal cancer prevention program. My goal is to continue to be part of and contribute to collaborative clinical and research efforts in order to provide the best care for our patients.

Rachel Hagey Saluti
Staff Research Scientist, Medicine - Med/Gastroenterology and Hepatology
BioAs a staff research scientist in the Glenn lab, my primary research focus is in translational molecular virology. Here, I study viruses--and the host targets they co-opt--with the goal of discovering unique biology that can be exploited to create new broad-spectrum therapeutic strategies. Of particular interest to me is how RNA viruses, like SARS-CoV-2 and influenza, use their RNA genomes to guide biological processes. Armed with this knowledge, I help design and develop novel drugs against such RNA targets with the overall aim of not only stopping the current pandemic, but also preventing the next one.
