Mohammad Abbasi, PhD

BioI am a Research Software Engineer (RSE) | Data Scientist & Data Manager at the Stanford Translational AI (STAI) Lab. I lead data engineering and AI infrastructure across large-scale neuroscience and healthcare projects, building standards-first, end-to-end pipelines for data collection, curation, preprocessing, and multimodal integration. My work emphasizes reproducibility, scalability, and interoperability through BIDS-style schemas, schema validation, containerized deployments, and CI/CD across heterogeneous computing environments.
I have designed and maintained containerized preprocessing workflows for thousands of subjects across major datasets, automating modality-specific steps such as registration, intensity normalization, bias-field correction, motion/confound estimation, quality control, and downstream metadata exports. I ensure these pipelines are robust, well-documented, versioned, and reusable across projects, sites, and modalities. -
John Wesson Ashford Jr

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioDr. Ashford is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (affiliated) at Stanford University and has been a staff psychiatrist since 2003 and the Director of the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System since 2007. Dr. Ashford is a Senior Research Scientist at the Stanford / VA Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Clinical Research Centers. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board and Chair of the Memory Screening Advisory Board of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, a Senior Editor of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, and the 14th President of the Society for Brain Mapping & Therapeutics.
Dr. Ashford obtained a BA the University of California, Berkeley in 1970. At UCLA (1970–1985) he attained an MD (1974) and PhD (1984), trained in psychiatry (1975-1979), co-founded the Neurobehavior Clinic, and was the first Chief Resident and Associate Director (1979-1980) on the Geriatric Psychiatry In-Patient Unit. He conducted the first double-blind study of an anti-cholinesterase drug (physostigmine) to treat Alzheimer patients (Ashford et al., 1981), a therapy which is now standard treatment for Alzheimer patients. Between 1980-1985, Dr. Ashford directed the Geriatric Psychiatry Out-patient Clinic at the Neuropsychiatric Institute and initiated the UCLA/Alzheimer PET scan study with Dr. David Kuhl.
Between 1979-1984 under Dr. Joaquin Fuster, Dr. Ashford completed his Ph.D. dissertation, a finalist for the Lindsley Prize for the best in Behavioral Neuroscience in 1984. With Dr. Fuster, he made the first proposal and physiologic demonstration of massive, reciprocal parallel information processing in the cerebral cortex (Ashford et al., 1985); a basis of memory, particularly that aspect of memory affected by Alzheimer’s disease (Ashford, Coburn, and Fuster, 1998). His Alzheimer and neurophysiology study led to the water-shed observation that neuroplastic memory mechanisms of the brain are specifically affected by Alzheimer pathology (Ashford & Jarvik, 1985; Ashford, 2015).
Dr. Ashford was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine between 1985-1990, helping to establish an NIA-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Center. There he published the first use of Modern Test Theory in the field of Medicine, “Item-Response Theory” analysis of the Mini-Mental State Exam (Ashford et al., 1989). He was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, Davis 1991-1992, at the Martinez, VAMC, and Chief of the Mental Hygiene Clinic. He was at the University of Kentucky from 1992-2003 as a tenured Associate Professor in Psychiatry, Neurology, and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry, where he continued his Alzheimer research. He proposed a “Time-Index” method to measure Alzheimer dementia severity (Ashford et al., 1995; Ashford & Schmitt, 2001), used in the UK Nun Study (Butler, Ashford, Snowden, 1996), and to study loss of cerebral perfusion in Alzheimer patients (Ashford et al., 2000). With Dr. James Geddes he showed the central role of paired helical filament pathology in destroying neuronal processes (Ashford et al., 1998).
Dr. Ashford’s long-term research interests are aging, Alzheimer’s disease, brain imaging, and memory mechanisms. He has developed early detection and measurement methods for mild cognitive disorders and Alzheimer’s disease, currently working on an internet program: www.memtrax.com . He is reformulating theories of Alzheimer pathology. As Director of WRIISC CA, he has studied traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, chronic multi-symptom illness, and other neuropsychiatric illnesses.

Eve Carlson

Clinical Professor, Psych/Public Mental Health & Population SciencesBioEve Carlson is a Clinical Professor who focuses on fostering mental health after traumatic stress. She is a clinical psychologist and a researcher with the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder’s Dissemination and Training Division. Her primary interests are in measurement development and recovery after traumatic stress. She collaborates with faculty in Surgery (David Spain) and Medicine (Lisa Shieh) to study mental health of patients hospitalized after sudden, severe illness or injury, ethnoracial disparities in traumatic stress risks and responses, screening for risk of mental health problems, and preventive mental health care. Our research has found disparities in mental health responses in patients hospitalized after emergency care across ethnoracial groups that are explained by variance in risk factors, including social determinants of health. As PIs of a multi-center study funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Dr. Carlson and Dr. Spain and their collaborators have developed and validated a mental health risk screen for patients hospitalized after emergency care for acute illness or injury. Data from patients who identify as Asian American/Pacific Islander, Black, Latinx, multirace, and White were analyzed to inform screen development, and the screen accurately predicts later mental health outcomes within these ethnoracial groups. The Hospital Mental Health Risk Screen can be administered to patients hospitalized after emergency care to assess their risk for later mental health problems. Patients screening positive for mental health risk can be given preventive mental health care. Dr. Carlson has collaborated with Dr. Josef Ruzek and Dr. Matthew Cordova to create the TLC by recently admitted hospital patients reduces later mental health symptoms.

Aryan Esmaeili

BioMy research bridges Veteran mental health, brain injury, and computational neuroscience through the development of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and real-world data methods to improve cognitive and rehabilitation outcomes among high-risk Veteran populations. My work focuses on the intersection of traumatic brain injury (TBI), neurodegeneration, substance use disorders, and psychiatric comorbidities, with an emphasis on understanding heterogeneous cognitive trajectories among Veterans. At the C-BRAIN Lab, I collaborate on computational approaches that integrate multimodal electronic health record (EHR) data, neuropsychological assessments, clinical narratives, and longitudinal health outcomes to better characterize cognitive impairment and recovery processes. My current research develops AI/ML phenotyping methods to distinguish potentially reversible cannabis-related cognitive impairment from progressive neurodegenerative disorders using large-scale Veterans Health Administration (VHA) data.
My long-term research goal is to advance precision rehabilitation and cognitive health strategies for Veterans with complex neurological and psychiatric conditions, including TBI and spinal cord injury (SCI). By combining computational neuroscience, causal inference methods, and patient-centered outcomes research, I aim to identify high-risk individuals earlier, improve cognitive outcome measurement, and inform more effective rehabilitation and mental health care strategies within and beyond the VA healthcare system. -

BioJessica E. Gonzalez, MSW is the Associate Director for the Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) Network Coordinating Office (NCO). The MHTTC NCO is part of the Center for Dissemination and Implementation (CDI) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. Through the MHTTC School Mental Health Initiative, Jessica is coordinating the work of 12 centers that provide training and technical assistance to the mental health and school mental health workforce to increase the use of evidence-based mental health prevention, treatment, and recovery support services for students across the United States.
Jessica has worked in the community as a social worker providing mental health services in school and outpatient clinic settings to children and adolescents of diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. In addition, she has over 10 years of experience in project management and coordination for research and evaluation in the areas of early childhood learning and development, special education, post-secondary education attainment, and delivery of school mental health services. Jessica has also worked for several high school and college programs in the area seeking to improve educational outcomes for first-generation and low-income students of color. -

Charlie Heriot-Maitland

BioDr Heriot-Maitland is a clinical psychologist, trainer, researcher, and author. He is an international expert in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and specifically the application of CFT for voice-hearing, trauma, and for people with psychosis and complex needs. Dr Heriot-Maitland is an experienced CFT therapist himself, and for the last 10 years has been leading the international development, research, and training of CFT for psychosis. His clinical research in this area has been mainly carried out at King’s College London and University of Glasgow, supported by funding from the UK Medical Research Council.
Dr Heriot-Maitland has published extensively on the theory and application of CFT in academic journals, produced videos and training materials, and has co-authored a self-help book on CFT for voice-hearers (Routledge, 2022). He has also developed novel and innovative interventions, based on CFT, for applications in different sectors (e.g., healthcare, social care, and education). Since 2012, he has been co-director of a UK organisation, Balanced Minds, which specialises in providing CFT therapy and resources for the general public and CFT training and supervision for professionals. He has been delivering training sessions at Stanford since 2019, and has held an Adjunct Lecturer appointment with the university since 2022. -
Michelle Madore, Ph.D.

Staff, Psych/Public Mental Health & Population SciencesBioDr. Madore is multiracial, Filipina woman working as a Clinical Neuropsychologist at VA Palo Alto Healthcare System (VAPAHCS) in the Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC). Here she serves as the Director of the National Clinical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Program whose mission is to: 1) increase the availability of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression in Veterans and (2) gain a greater understanding of the treatment efficacy of TMS in our complex Veteran population. She is also the Co-Director of the Sierra Pacific MIRECC Advanced Fellowship at VAPAHCS. Dr. Madore is the Co-PI for studies looking at the clinical efficacy and safety for substance use disorders, specifically methamphetamine and alcohol. Dr. Madore is also a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Stanford University School of Medicine’s Department in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Cincinnati, where she received specialized training in neuropsychology. Dr. Madore completed her pre-doctoral internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). She has completed postdoctoral training focused on clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation research at VA Martinez, San Francisco VA Medical Center and VAPAHCS.
Dr. Madore is involved in several professional organizations and serves in several leadership positions. She is the Editor for the Asian American Journal of Psychology and Deputy Editor for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. -
Colleen Mills-Finnerty

Staff, Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesBioDr. Mills-Finnerty received her PhD in Psychology from Rutgers University, with a focus on cognitive neuroscience. She completed a MIRECC Advanced Fellowship at the Palo Alto VA and Stanford Dept. Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, studying mood disorders using neuroimaging and neurostimulation. She was then awarded a VA Career Development Award to study attention and reward function in mood disorders. She joined the Women’s Operational Military Exposures Network as a Research Scientist in 2024. She is interested in health disparities that impact neurological and mental health in women Veterans, and their relationship to Military Environmental Exposures.
She has authored multiple award-winning papers, including “Affective Neuroscience: Applications for Sexual Medicine Research and Clinical Practice,” proposing a novel treatment schema for sexual trauma based on affective neuroscience, which was awarded the Bronze Prize for Best Paper by the International Society for Sexual Medicine. -

Martin Stefan Mumenthaler

BioMartin Mumenthaler has a PharmD and a PhD in psychopharmacology from the University of Bern, Switzerland. He holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine where he has been conducting research programs in addiction medicine and psychopharmacology, and teaching and mentoring medical students and residents on a voluntary basis.
Dr. Mumenthaler has also been working in various full-time positions in the pharmaceutical industry as Director in Clinical Development as well as in Medical Affairs, and as a consultant for early-stage pharma- and biotech companies providing advice on designing and conducting clinical trials, and analyzing and interpreting study results, mainly in the field of addiction medicine and pain.
His academic research has focused on the effects of psychoactive drugs on human performance, Aerospace Medicine, Alzheimer’s disease, and addiction medicine, and in these areas he has presented his results internationally and published over twenty-five peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has also served as a reviewer for various scientific journals, and is a member of the Research Society on Alcoholism, and an Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association. -

BioAnkita Patil is a public health researcher focused on advancing health equity through a social justice–centered framework. She holds a B.A. in Social Psychology from The College of New Jersey and an M.S. in Community Health and Prevention Research from Stanford University. Her research experience includes work at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Johns Hopkins University, where she examined the health impacts of incarceration, trauma-informed care, and reproductive health among incarcerated populations. Ankita is a co-author of an American Public Health Association policy statement calling for an end to shackling incarcerated patients and has peer-reviewed work on COVID-19 in Massachusetts prisons. Her work bridges research, policy, and community-based advocacy to advance humane public health solutions.

Benjamin Rein

BioBen Rein, PhD is a neuroscientist by training and science communicator whose research has focused on the neuroscience of empathy, the genetic basis of autism spectrum disorder, and how synaptic deficits modulate social behavior. In his postdoctoral work with Dr. Robert Malenka, Ben characterized the neurobiological mechanism by which MDMA acts as an "empathogen." His research has been honored with awards from the NIH, the Society for Neuroscience, and Sigma Xi.
Outside of the lab, Ben creates educational science videos for an audience of >1 million social media followers. His videos summarize recent research papers, teach neuroscience basics, and debunk viral videos containing misinformation. They have received over 60 million views and been featured on Good Morning America, ABC News, and other major media outlets. Ben has been profiled by Popular Mechanics and Spectrum News, appeared on Entertainment Tonight, and joined over 40 podcasts including StarTalk with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Ben's science communication efforts have been recognized with awards from the National Academies of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society for Neuroscience.
Ben currently serves as the Chief Science Officer of the Mind Science Foundation and has served as a scientific/media consultant for more than 35 companies and foundations. He is a contributing editor at OpenMind Magazine, and the Founder & President of the Aspiring Scientists Coalition, an organization providing free guidance for students in 75+ countries. -

Dr. Rosen is board certified in clinical neuropsychology with a geriatric focus. She completed college at Brown University, a clinical psychology Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University, clinical neuropsychology internship at the Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York, and clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Rosen completed specialty research fellowship training at the National Institute on Aging (Intramural Research Training Award) and Stanford (NRSA F32, K01) in functional imaging and noninvasive brain stimulation with support from NIA.
CLINICAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Dr. Rosen is Director of Dementia Education at the Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center at the Palo Alto VAHCS. She is also a neuropsychologist and part of the consensus clinical group and education core at the Stanford’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (NIA). Dr. Rosen’s funded research has focused on applying cognitive neuroscience of aging to improve clinical practice in older adults by using cognitive measures, brain imaging, and noninvasive brain stimulation such as TMS. Studies include using fMRI as an outcome measure for cognitive training, studying how to improve the accuracy of transcranial magnetic stimulation targeting with and without image guidance, and using structural MRI to avoid postoperative cognitive decline and improve outcome from carotid vascular procedures. She has a longstanding commitment to neuroethics and leads a feature in the Journal of Alzheimer Disease that focuses on ethical issues in new and emerging AD applications.

BioThe overarching aim of Dr. Scanlon’s research is to develop and evaluate low-cost, pragmatic and clinically translatable methods for improving management of neurodegenerative disease and dementia. To that end, the Caregiver Technology Division of the Scanlon Lab aims to enhance patient- and family-centered care through novel, broadly customizable, and highly scalable caregiver interventions. In parallel, the Neurodegenerative Division of the Scanlon Lab focuses on the development and application of cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and biological markers for the initiation and progression of neurodegeneration.
Dr. Scanlon received his bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and doctorate in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Miami. After concluding his clinical internship in Geropsychology/Neuropsychology at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), he completed fellowships in Aging and Dementia at Stanford University School of Medicine and VAPAHCS. Dr. Scanlon is currently a VA Career Development Awardee in the Sierra-Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) and Stanford/VA Aging Clinical Research Center where his work focuses on developing and evaluating low-cost, pragmatic and clinically translatable methods for improving management of neurodegenerative disease and dementia. He also serves as Co-Director of the Stanford/VA California Alzheimer's Disease Center, Chair of the VAPAHCS Dementia Committee, and Co-Chair of the Department of Veterans Affairs VISN 21 Dementia Committee. -

Savanna Elizabeth Stromberg

BioSavanna Stromberg, BS, is an Associate Project Coordinator at Stanford CDI, who will be working across projects on C-DIAS, CMHIS, and RASC. She recently received her BS in Psychology from the University of Washington, where she conducted research on trauma and mental health outcomes in the Honors Psychology program. With a strong interest in substance use interventions and mental health, Savanna is eager to expand her expertise in implementation research. At Stanford CDI, Savanna supports multi-project management, helps build and organize data, and assists with the development, communication, and design of research findings to internal and external audiences.
