Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research program seeks to identify the cellular and molecular programs regulating vascular and lung development, through the use of cultured cells and tissues and mouse and rat models. We then determine how these programs are perturbed by genetic abnormalities or injurious processes associated with disease, focusing on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a fatal complication in children with heart defects, and a condition of unknown etiology primarily in young women.

Fellow in Pediatrics - CardiologyBioAlireza Raissadati, MD, PhD is a fellow in pediatric cardiology at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford. He obtained his medical degree, PhD in medicine, and PhD in biotechnology from University of Helsinki. His research focused on population-based long-term outcomes of patients following congenital heart surgery and the role of vascular growth factors and gene vectors as management strategies for heart transplant rejection.
Dr. Raissadati completed his pediatric residency training at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Boston Medical Center in Boston, MA. His clinical interest lies in treating pediatric patients with heart failure and following heart transplantation. His research is focused on understanding the intricacies of heart transplant rejection to find new therapeutic targets for acute rejection and coronary artery vasculopathy of the heart transplant. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory's expertise in cardiovascular phenotyping has led to the development of mouse models of congenital heart disease that recapitulate abnormal loading conditions on the heart. We have used these models to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of right heart failure in children and adults with congenital heart disease with the long term goal of identifying noninvasive diagnostic tools to better assess right ventricular health and to develop right ventricle specific therapeutics.

Current Role at StanfordI joined the Cardiopulmonary Research Program of Drs. Rabinovitch and Bland at Stanford University in 2002, as the Academic and Research Program Officer, and since 2020 assumed my role at the Basic Science and Engineering (BASE) Initiative at the Betty Irene Moore Children's Heart Center, directed by Dr. Rabinovitch. I organize the educational activities of the lab, and assist the faculty and fellows with the preparation of grant proposals, IRB, APLAC and Biosafety protocols, manuscripts, and presentations. I served as the Site Coordinator for the Stanford Transplant Procurement Center of the Pulmonary Hypertension Breakthrough Initiative (PHBI), headed by Dr. Rabinovitch,that now evolved into the Stanford Transplant Tissue Bank. In this capacity, I oversee patient recruitment, data collection and reporting, and ensure compliance with university and federal guidelines. I coordinated and prepared the application for an Investigational New Drug (IND) and the pre-IND meeting that preceded that, for Elafin as a therapy for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) to the FDA in August 2017, and with the Study PIs coordinated the Phase 1 clinical trial “Safety and Tolerability of Escalating Doses of Subcutaneous Elafin (Tiprelestat) Injection in Healthy Normal Subjects” that followed.
From 2005-2015, I served as the Administrative Coordinator of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Science Scholarly Concentration for medical students at Stanford University School of Medicine. This includes facilitating communication of the four co-Directors with the School of Medicine Administration, the medical students, and the faculty mentors. An important component of this role is the coordination of the MED223 course, a medical school course where faculty and fellows present new developments in cardiovascular science in the form of a journal club. From 2013-2018, I was the coordinator for the NIH-NHLBI T32 “Mechanisms and Innovation in Vascular Disease” (PI: RL Dalman), and from 2013 to date for NIH-NHLBI K12 HL120001 “Stanford Career Development Program in ‘Omics’ of Lung Disease”. (PIs: M Rabinovitch, MR Nicolls and MP Snyder). This included recruitment of candidates, oversight of training activities, ensuring compliance with NIH and Stanford policies, and acting as a liaison between the trainees and the Directors to facilitate effective communication.
Prior to joining Stanford, I was Associate Director (Scientific Development Administrator) at the Institute for Medicine and Engineering, directed by Dr. Peter Davies at the University of Pennsylvania. In this role, I was the liaison with federal funding agencies and organized multi-investigator program projects and training grants. -

Matteo Salvador

BioMatteo Salvador is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab led by Professor Alison Marsden.
His main research topics are related to cardiac modeling, model-order reduction and uncertainty quantification.
Matteo Salvador received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Engineering and his Master of Science in Computational Science and Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.
He completed his PhD in Mathematical Models and Methods for Engineering at Politecnico di Milano under the supervision of Professor Alfio Quarteroni. He worked in the framework of the iHEART project, whose aim is to create a fully integrated human heart for the accurate and efficient numerical simulation of the cardiac function. Specifically, he developed comprehensive mathematical models blended with novel numerical methods and Scientific Machine Learning for cardiac electromechanics. -

BioDavid Sarno is a lecturer in the Department of Pediatrics at the school of medicine, specializing in virtual reality-based education. David founded Lighthaus Inc., a VR education company in 2013 while a John S. Knight journalism fellow at Stanford. Before that, David was a technology journalist at the Los Angeles Times for seven years. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa and a B.A. in Computer Science from Yale University.

The SURF program is an innovative collaboration between LPCH, Stanford University Hospital and the Stanford School of Engineering. The program has focused on improving quality and safety of patient care, improving hospital operations and promoting clinical effectiveness utilizing contemporary technologies such as machine learning, mathematical optimization, simulation and a variety of statistical, probabilistic and computational tools. The program has 2 independent funding mechanism to primarily improve patient care/hospital operations and improve academics for faculty within the department of Pediatrics at LPCH.

CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS
The Clinical Effectiveness (CE) Program is a funded program that aims to understand and improve unnecessary variation in healthcare delivery in order to optimize quality of care and reduce wasteful expenditures. The CE program has developed innovative programs such as Target Based Care, an award-winning intervention to reduce variation in hospital length of stay and currently a multi-center trial involving more than 20 hospitals in North America. In 2016, the CE program included the first CE fellowship program in a pediatric training program with 3 cycles of graduates. The CE program is supported by LPCH and a philanthropic gift by Susan Choe and Thomas Tobiason. -

Jennifer Woo, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - CardiologyBioDr. Woo is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist with the Adult Congenital Heart Program at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Divisions of Cardiovascular Medicine and Pediatric Cardiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She diagnoses and treats a range of cardiovascular diseases, with a focus on adult congenital heart disease. Dr. Woo has Level III training with the National Board of Echocardiography, a certification that recognizes her experience in complex cardiac imaging. She also has specialized expertise in cardiac MRI. Each of her patients receives a personalized, comprehensive care plan delivered with compassion.
Dr. Woo is heavily involved in adult congenital heart disease research. She has a particular interest in imaging and heart failure in adults with congenital heart disease. She has received grant funding for her work, including from the Adult Congenital Heart Association. The National Institutes of Health awarded granted her the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award.
She has published research in several peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Woo has presented her findings at regional and national meetings, including the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Bay Area Conference and the International Symposium on Adult Congenital Heart Disease.
Dr. Woo is a member of the Adult Congenital Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and American Society of Echocardiography. -
Chongyang Zhang

BioDr. Zhang is a Postdoctoral Scholar at RabLab in the cardiopulmonary division. She has a PhD in Pharmacology from University of Rochester, NY. She has research in cardiovascular research and chronobiology published in high impact peer-reviewed journals. She is recipient of honors including predoctoral fellowship from AHA, Travel Grant for Early Career Investigators from Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. She has served as ad hoc reviewer for more than 40 manuscripts for reputed journals.
