Sarah Levine
Lecturer, Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP)BioI am the executive director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP). Our STEP faculty and staff prepare teachers for leadership in and beyond the classroom. Teachers learn to help their students develop knowledge, skills, and sense of self and community as we work to understand the connections between culture, teaching, and learning.
Before pursuing an academic career, I taught secondary English at a Chicago public school for ten years. While there, I founded and ran a youth radio program that used digital audio production as a tool to help make writing and analysis relevant and real-world for students, and to build bridges between in- and out-of-school worlds.
My research focuses on the teaching and learning of literary interpretation and writing in under-resourced high schools, with an emphasis on the links between in- and out-of-school interpretive practices. I am also interested in ways that AI and digital media (for example, natural language processing models like ChatGPT; visual representations of text like word clouds; and radio production) can be used as frameworks for teaching reading and writing to middle and high school students. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Levinson directs the Program on the Genetics of Brain Function in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The program investigates the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia and major depressive disorder), using genetic association, linkage and resequencing methodologies. In collaboration with Dr. Alice Whittemore, we are also actively engaged in statistical methods testing and development for genetic research.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on the physiolgogic and biomarker characteristics of early acute lung injury (ALI) prior to need for mechanical ventilation. While, to date no pharmacologic treatment has improved survival in ALI, following the paradigm of early goal directed therapy for severe sepsis, clinical benefit may derive from identifying patients and initiating treatment prior to the need for positive pressure ventilation (and therefore prior to meeting current study entry criteria).

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Levitt founded and directs Stanford’s Global Projects Center (GPC), which conducts research, education and outreach to enhance financing, governance and sustainability of global building and infrastructure projects. Dr. Levitt's research focuses on developing enhanced governance of infrastructure projects procured via Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) delivery, and alternative project delivery approaches for complex buildings like full-service hospitals or data centers.

BioIndra Levy received her Ph.D. in modern Japanese literature from Columbia University in 2001. She is the author of Sirens of the Western Shore: the Westernesque Femme Fatale, Translation, and Vernacular Style in Modern Japanese Literature (Columbia, 2006) and editor of Translation in Modern Japan (Routledge, 2009). She has served as Executive Director for the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC) since 2010. In 2022, she was named the inaugural recipient of the Irene Hirano Inouye Award from the Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies for her contributions to Japanese Studies. Her current work focuses on humor in Japanese literature, performance, and translation from the late 19th century to the mid-20th. Her research interests include modern Japanese literature and criticism; critical translation studies; gender and language; modern Japanese performance, especially in the Meiji and Taishō eras; and modern Japanese women’s intellectual history.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Levy Lab studies how microbiome-brain interactions influence metabolism, behavior, and disease. By investigating how microbial signals affect neural circuits, we explore mechanisms underlying obesity, diabetes, and psychiatric conditions. The lab seeks to uncover new therapeutic targets using advanced neuroscience tools like optogenetics and imaging. Our research aims to improve understanding of how microbiome imbalances contribute to disease and how restoring balance can promote health.

BioRichard J. Levy, MD, FAAP is Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. He has been an NIH-funded clinician-scientist for over 20 years. His laboratory currently investigates the toxicity of anesthetics in the developing brain and heart along with mitochondrial mechanisms of anesthesia. He is currently funded to study and develop a benzoquinone molecule as a novel anesthetic. He is an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Pediatrics, Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, and Survey of Anesthesiology and serves as a regular reviewer for Anesthesiology, British Journal of Anaesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Neurotoxicology and Teratology, PLOS One, The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, and the American Journal of Physiology. In addition, Dr. Levy has served as an ad hoc reviewer for Science, Nature Medicine, Scientific Reports, and Nature Reviews Cardiology.

Adrian Lew

BioProf. Lew's interests lie in the broad area of computational solid mechanics. He is concerned with the fundamental design and mathematical analysis of material models and numerical algorithms.
Currently the group is focused on the design of algorithms to simulate hydraulic fracturing. To this end we work on algorithms for time-integration embedded or immersed boundary methods.
