Janene Fuerch
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Neonatology
BioJanene H. Fuerch, MD is a Clinical Professor of Neonatology at Stanford University Medical Center, as well as an innovator, educator, researcher and physician entrepreneur. She has an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from Brown University and a medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo. At Stanford University she completed a pediatrics residency, neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship and the Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship.
She is also Assistant Director of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Program at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Impact1 where she mentors and advises new entrepreneurs through all aspects of medical device development, from identifying clinical needs to commercialization. Her specific areas of investigational interest include the development and commercialization process of neonatal, pediatric and maternal health medical devices as well as the utilization of a simulated environment to develop and test medical devices. She is a national leader in neonatal resuscitation, ECMO, device development and has been an AHRQ and FDA funded investigator. But her work extends outside of the academic realm to industry having co-founded EMME (acquired by Simple Health 2022) an award-winning reproductive health company, medical director for Novonate (acquired by Laborie 2023) a neonatal umbilical catheter securement company and notable consultant for Vitara (EXTEND - artificial environment to decrease complications of prematurity), and Avanos™. Janene is passionate about improving the health of children and newborns through medical device innovation and research. -

Her post-doctoral and research-associate work at Rotman Research Institute in Toronto was supported by awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Her research continues to explore the biological nature of human musical ability by examining brain activities with non-invasive human neurophysiological measures such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG). -

Gerald Fuller

BioThe processing of complex liquids (polymers, suspensions, emulsions, biological fluids) alters their microstructure through orientation and deformation of their constitutive elements. In the case of polymeric liquids, it is of interest to obtain in situ measurements of segmental orientation and optical methods have proven to be an excellent means of acquiring this information. Research in our laboratory has resulted in a number of techniques in optical rheometry such as high-speed polarimetry (birefringence and dichroism) and various microscopy methods (fluorescence, phase contrast, and atomic force microscopy).
The microstructure of polymeric and other complex materials also cause them to have interesting physical properties and respond to different flow conditions in unusual manners. In our laboratory, we are equipped with instruments that are able to characterize these materials such as shear rheometer, capillary break up extensional rheometer, and 2D extensional rheometer. Then, the response of these materials to different flow conditions can be visualized and analyzed in detail using high speed imaging devices at up to 2,000 frames per second.
There are numerous processes encountered in nature and industry where the deformation of fluid-fluid interfaces is of central importance. Examples from nature include deformation of the red blood cell in small capillaries, cell division and structure and composition of the tear film. Industrial applications include the processing of emulsions and foams, and the atomization of droplets in ink-jet printing. In our laboratory, fundamental research is in progress to understand the orientation and deformation of monolayers at the molecular level. These experiments employ state of the art optical methods such as polarization modulated dichroism, fluorescence microscopy, and Brewster angle microscopy to obtain in situ measurements of polymer films and small molecule amphiphile monolayers subject to flow. Langmuir troughs are used as the experimental platform so that the thermodynamic state of the monolayers can be systematically controlled. For the first time, well characterized, homogeneous surface flows have been developed, and real time measurements of molecular and microdomain orientation have been obtained. These microstructural experiments are complemented by measurements of the macroscopic, mechanical properties of the films. -

BioI am an anthropologist of science, medicine and well-being interested in how social identities, health outcomes and scientific narratives intersect. In my first book, The Enculturated Gene: Sickle Cell Health Politics and Biological Difference in West Africa (Princeton, 2011), I draw on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork in the US, France and Senegal. By bringing the lives of people with sickle cell anemia together with how the science about them has been made, The Enculturated Gene weaves together postcolonial genetic science, the effects of structural adjustment on health resources, and patient activism between Senegal and France to show how African sickle cell has been ordered in ethnic-national terms at the level of the gene. The Enculturated Gene won the Royal Anthropological Institute’s 2011 Amaury Talbot Prize for the most valuable work of African Anthropology and the American Anthropological Association’s 2014 Robert B. Textor and Family Prize for Excellence in Anticipatory Anthropology.
Beginning in 2003, I conducted multi-sited field research in the United States on emergent technologies that measure human genetic diversity among populations and between individuals. As an outgrowth of this research, I became particularly interested in how scientists engage ideas of genetic "inclusion" in how they enlist participant involvement in specific disease research problems, and how they also grapple with social movements, historical reckoning, data privacy and racial capital. My second book, Tabula Raza: Mapping Race and Human Diversity in American Genome Science (UC Press, 2024), explores these issues in light of how U.S. political concepts of “race” function in genetic recruitment protocols and study designs on complex disease, “tailored medicine,” ancestry tracing, and personal genomics. Tabula Raza won the 2024 Diana Forsythe Prize granted by the Committee for the Anthropology of Science, Technology & Computing of the American Anthropological Association. It also won the 2024 C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
As of 2019, I have begun to interrogate inequities in human migration and mobility--focusing on the forces that push people to leave West Africa for the complicated pull of Europe. I am concerned with people's personal narratives of risk and success at all costs in light of state sponsored surveillance, the simultaneous rigidity and fluidity of borders (land and sea) marked by new technologies, as well as how people draw from and create various forms of science and knowledge to forge relational trajectories that come to constitute home. This work also considers how human-made environmental resource scarcity figures into decisions to migrate (or, rather, to simply move) in their quests for viable futures, stability, and health. The project furthermore investigates new forms of racialization engendered by contemporary iterations of technologically-assisted and animated border patrolling, while the ocean itself is being reconceptualized as a new frontier for salvatory tech options and economic growth in Africa and elsewhere.
My research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the Andrew and Florence White Fellows program in Medicine and the Humanities, the Ford Foundation, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. I have also been an invited scholar at the Centre de Sociologie de l'Innovation in Paris (1997-1998, 2000 and 2002), a USIA Fulbright Scholar to Senegal, a fellow at the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2004-2005), and a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar at the Harvard School of Public Health (2005-2007). My work was also selected for a Scholars Award by NSF's Science & Society Program, co-sponsored by the Directorate of Biology, from 2008-2012. -
Enrica Fung, MD

BioDr. Fung is a board-certified nephrologist with Stanford Health Care’s Kidney Clinic and Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program. She is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology.
Dr. Fung cares for people with all types of kidney diseases. After completing her nephrology fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Fung served as chief of nephrology and led the transplant referral and post-transplant program at Veterans Affairs Loma Linda Healthcare System. Her extensive experience includes working with older adults and veterans with advanced or chronic kidney disease. Dr. Fung’s work reflects a passion for educating and empowering her patients. She integrates their goals of care and other aspects of advanced care planning into treatment planning.
Dr. Fung’s clinical research interests broadly include healthcare delivery and health outcomes in chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Fung is a peer reviewer for several prestigious publications, including Kidney Medicine and the American Heart Journal. She has also been featured on podcasts and health care educational videos. She has presented to her peers at the American Society of Geriatrics, the American Society of Nephrology, and the American College of Physicians, Northern California Chapter. Dr. Fung has also published work in the Merck Manual Professional Edition, the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and the journal of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association.

Lawrence Fung MD PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Lawrence Fung is a physician-scientist specializing in autism and neurodiversity. Dr. Fung is an associate professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University. He is the director of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project (SNP), director of the Neurodiversity Clinic, and PI at the Fung Lab. Dr. Fung’s research traverses from multi-modal neuroimaging studies to a new conceptualization of neurodiversity and its application to clinical, educational, and employment settings. His lab has two main arms of research: (1) neurobiology of autism and (2) neurodiversity.
The neurobiology arm of his lab focuses on advancing the understanding of the thalamocortical circuits and their socio-communicative and cognitive functions in people on the spectrum by using novel neuroimaging and bioanalytical technologies. The findings of his neurobiology research efforts were published in top journals in our field, such as Molecular Psychiatry, Translational Psychiatry, and Psychoneuroendocrinology.
Using a community-based participatory research approach, Dr. Fung’s team devises and implements novel interventions to improve the lives of neurodiverse individuals by maximizing their potential and productivity. He has developed and assessed several psychoeducational interventions, including the Developing Inclusive and Vocational Educational Resources for Success and Employment (DIVERSE) curriculum.
Dr. Fung is also the founding director of the SNP, a special initiative of the Department of Psychiatry at Stanford. Since 2017, the SNP has organized various events, including the Stanford Neurodiversity Summit, which brings thousands of people together yearly to share visions, innovations, and inspirations about maximizing the potential of neurodiversity. Each summer, about 100 high-school students join us at the SNP’s Research, Education, and Advocacy Camp for High Schoolers (SNP-REACH), to learn how to develop neurodiversity advocacy projects. Dr. Fung also teaches a neurodiversity design thinking course at Stanford. Clinically, Dr. Fung has applied the SBMN to his clinical work and is teaching a CME course focusing on delivering neurodiversity-affirmative care to neurodivergent patients. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe research team Professor Gaffney leads focuses on time resolved studies of chemical reactions. Recent advances in ultrafast x-ray lasers, like the LCLS at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, enable chemical reactions to be observed on the natural time and length scales of the chemical bond – femtoseconds and Ångströms. The knowledge gained from x-ray and optical laser studies will be used to spark new approaches to photo-catalysis and chemical synthesis.

BioJohn V. Gahagan MD is a Clinical Associate Professor in Colon & Rectal Surgery. He leads the Colon & Rectal Surgery residency program as Program Director and serves as Chief of Surgery and the Medical Director of Supply Chain at the Stanford Tri-Valley Hospital. He joined Stanford in 2019 to build the Stanford Colon & Rectal Surgery practice in the East Bay at Stanford Tri-Valley in Pleasanton and at Stanford Health Care – Emeryville. He has training in advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques including robotic and laparoscopic surgery. He has authored several textbook chapters and original articles in peer-reviewed journals. His clinical practice is focused on the surgical treatment of colon and rectal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), and benign colon and anorectal diseases (diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures). He believes in patient-centered care and multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus.
Dr. Gahagan is passionate about surgical education. He serves as an Associate Program Director of the Stanford General Surgery Residency Training Program. In that role, he oversees resident evaluation and feedback. He led the revamp of the program’s evaluation process and Clinical Competency Committee – work that has been presented at the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In 2021, he established the Stanford General Surgery Endoscopy rotation, giving general surgery residents an opportunity to gain endoscopy experience by collaborating with faculty gastroenterologists and fulfilling their graduation requirements. In 2026, he established the Colon & Rectal Surgery residency program at Stanford and serves as the Program Director. At the time of accreditation, this program was the only ACGME accredited Colon & Rectal Surgery residency program in Northern California. In addition, he is the General Surgery Rotation Director for the Stanford Tri-Valley Family Medicine Residency. On a national level, he is an associate question writer for the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery and serves on the USMLE Step 3 Test Development committee and the USMLE Management Committee.
He also serves in various administrative roles, including as Chief of Surgery at the Stanford Tri-Valley Hospital. In 2025, he was appointment Medical Director of Supply Chain for the Stanford Tri-Valley Hospital. He is a member of the Stanford Medicine Partners Quality and Credentialing Committee, the Stanford Tri-Valley Operating Room Committee and the Stanford Tri-Valley Medical Executive Committee. -

Research Scholar, Institute for Research in the Social SciencesBioI'm a social psychologist and Associate Director of Stanford University’s Politics and Social Change Lab (PASCL). There, I help lead the lab’s research program, cultivate partnerships with government and civil-society organizations, translate findings for practitioners and the public, and chart PASCL’s strategic direction.
My scholarship clusters around three threads:
1. Persuasion and Intervention Design (with a side of Artificial Intelligence) – designing and evaluating persuasive appeals and interventions to promote prosocial behavior and flourishing, and exploring how AI can enhance these efforts.
2. Compassion, Moral Concern, and Altruism – investigating psychological factors that influence compassion, altruistic behavior, and moral concern toward distant or abstract entities such as animals and future generations.
3. Meta-Science and Field-Building – identifying and promoting the highest-impact research questions and interventions, and developing novel methods (including AI-based approaches) to maximize social scientists' positive impact on society.
Before Stanford, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. I received Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Michigan (2020) and my B.A. in Psychology from Tufts University (2011).
Outside the lab, you'll find me spending time with family and friends, playing all the sports, improvising dishes in the kitchen, and doing various nature-y things in nature. -

Kristin Galetta, MD

BioDr. Galetta is a board-certified neurologist within the Neurohospitalist and Neuroimmunology divisions. She completed a multiple sclerosis (MS) fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
She has extensive experience diagnosing and treating patients with autoimmune neurologic conditions including multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, autoimmune encephalitis and transverse myelitis. Her research interests are focused on understanding best treatment strategies for patients with multiple sclerosis and more rare autoimmune neurologic conditions. She also has an interest in medical education improvement.

Moises Gallegos MD MPH MEHP

BioMoises grew up in Southern California, part of a first-generation family in the US, born to immigrant parents from Mexico. He attended Harvard College where he studied Neurobiology and a minor concentration in Mind/Brain/Behavior. He earned his MD from Stanford School of Medicine and concurrently earned a Masters in Public Health from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He completed residency and was Chief Resident at Baylor College of Medicine while working at Ben Taub General Hospital. He began his academic career as Assistant Professor in the Henry JN Taub Department of Emergency Medicine at Ben Taub and rejoined the Stanford Department of Emergency Medicine in 2019 as a Clinical Assistant Professor. He is the Clerkship Director for EMED301A, the required/core Emergency Medicine rotation, and serves as core faculty for the EM Residency. He most recently completed coursework to obtain a Master of Education in the Health Professions and Post-Masters Certificate in Evidence-Based Teaching in the Health Professions from Johns Hopkins University School of Education.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe goals of Dr. Galli's laboratory were to understand the regulation of mast cell and basophil development and function, and to develop and use genetic approaches to elucidate the roles of these cells in health and disease. We studied both the roles of mast cells, basophils, and IgE in normal physiology and host defense, e.g., in responses to parasites and in enhancing resistance to venoms, and also their roles in pathology, e.g., anaphylaxis, food allergy, and asthma, both in mice and humans.

Marisa Galvez

BioMarisa Galvez specializes in the literature of the Middle Ages in France and Western Europe, especially the poetry and narrative literature written in Occitan and Old French. Her areas of interest include the troubadours, vernacular poetics, the intersection of performance and literary cultures, and the critical history of medieval studies as a discipline. At Stanford, she currently teaches courses on medieval and Renaissance French literature and love lyric, as well as interdisciplinary upper level courses on the medieval imaginary in modern literature, film, and art.
Her first book, Songbook: How Lyrics Became Poetry in Medieval Europe (University of Chicago Press, 2012, awarded John Nicholas Brown Prize from the Medieval Academy of America), treats what poetry was before the emergence of the modern category, “poetry”: that is, how vernacular songbooks of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries shaped our modern understanding of poetry by establishing expectations of what is a poem, what is a poet, and what is lyric poetry itself. The first comparative study of songbooks, the book concerns three vernacular traditions—Occitan, Middle High German, and Castilian—and analyzes how the songbook emerged from its original performance context of oral publication, into a medium for preservation, and finally became a literary object that performs the interests of poets and readers.
Her second book, The Subject of Crusade:Lyric, Romance, and Materials, 1150-1500 (University of Chicago Press, 2020) examines how the crusader subject of vernacular literature sought to reconcile secular ideals about love and chivalry with crusade. This study places this literature in dialogue with new ideas about penance and confession that emerged from the second half of the twelfth century to the end of the thirteenth. Subject argues that poetic articulations are crucial for understanding the crusades as a complex cultural and historical phenomenon, and examines another version of speaking crusades, in which lyric, romance and materials such as tapestries, textiles, and tombstones manifest ambivalence about crusade ideals. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe focus of my laboratory is the immune response to viral vaccines evaluating the ontogeny of responses in infants and limitations in immunocompromised hosts. We have studied responses to an early two-dose measles immunization, one versus 2 doses of varicella immunization, and polio vaccine in preterm versus term infants. Other active areas of research include measles and varicella immunity in HIV infected individuals, and transplant recipients.

Alex Gao

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe integrate computational genome mining with high-throughput experimental approaches and structural biology to harness the rich diversity of genes from microbes, with the goal of developing new antibiotic strategies and molecular biotechnology. A major area of current interest is uncovering novel molecular functions involved in anti-phage defense and bacteria–phage interactions, which are a major driver of molecular innovation in nature.

Grace Gao

BioGrace Gao is an associate professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in the Electrical Engineering Department. She leads the Navigation and Autonomous Vehicles Laboratory (NAV Lab) and serves as co-director of the Stanford AI Safety Center and co-lead of the Stanford SystemX Robotics area. Her research focuses on robust and secure perception, localization, and navigation, with applications in crewed and uncrewed aerial vehicles, autonomous cars, humanoid robots, and space robotics.
Prof. Gao has won numerous awards, including the NSF CAREER Award, the Institute of Navigation Early Achievement Award, the RTCA William E. Jackson Award, and the Inspiring Early Academic Career Award from Stanford University. In addition to her research achievements, she has received significant recognition for her teaching and advising, including the AIAA Stanford Chapter Excellence in Advising Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award.
