Alaa Eldin Abdelaal

BioAlaa Eldin Abdelaal is a postdoctoral scholar at the Collaborative Haptics and Robotics in Medicine Lab at Stanford University, working with Prof. Allison Okamura and Prof. Jeannette Bohg. He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in December 2022. He was also a visiting graduate scholar at the Computational Interaction and Robotics Lab at Johns Hopkins University. During his PhD, he was co-advised by Prof. Tim Salcudean and Prof. Gregory Hager. He holds a M.Sc. in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University and a B.Sc. in Computer and Systems Engineering from Mansoura University in Egypt. His research interests are at the intersection of automation and human-robot interaction for human skill augmentation and decision support with application to surgical robotics. His research has been recognized with the Best Bench-to-Bedside Paper Award at the International Conference on Information Processing in Computer-Assisted Interventions (IPCAI) 2019. His research has been funded by a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, Intuitive Surgical Inc., and the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) at Stanford University.

Facundo Cabrera-Booman
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioFacundo Cabrera-Booman is a Fellow in the Center for Turbulence Research in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Physics from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and his Ph.D. in Physics from the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France. His research interests include wall turbulence at high Reynolds number on rough and smooth surfaces, Lagrangian dynamics of inertial particles in turbulent and quiescent flows, and droplet dynamics.

Thomas Jaroslawski
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioThomas (Tomek) Jaroslawski is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center of Turbulence Research (CTR). His research interests lie in experimental fluid mechanics, applied to a wide range of applications. He works with Professor Beverley McKeon on investigating rough-walled turbulent boundary layer flows, and also with Professor Juan Santiago on studying the flow physics in various microfluidic applications.

Makrand Khanwale
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioI received my PhD from Iowa State University co-majoring in Mechanical engineering and Applied Mathematics. I was co-advised by Dr. Baskar Ganapathysubramanian and Dr. James Rossmanith. For my dissertation I worked on development and analysis of numerical schemes for high fidelity simulations of multiphase flows. Specifically I developed energy stable numerical methods to simulate two-phase flows using Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes equations. I also have experience in development of tools to analyse and understand complex physical processes like multi-phase flows and turbulence. Before joining Iowa State for my graduate work, I had a brief stint as a research associate in Dr. Krishnaswamy Nandakumar‘s group in Louisiana State University (LSU). At LSU I worked on developing theoretical models for energy cascades in multi-phase flows.

Lu Lu
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioLu Lu is a postdoctoral fellow of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Lu received his bachelor degree from Ningbo University in China in June 2014, and obtained his doctoral degree from Shanghai University in China in December 2019. During July 2020 to June 2022, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Peking University in China. Lu’s research interests focus on micro-/nano-mechanics and origami mechanics and design.

Jennifer Maier
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioMy research interests include a broad variety of topics, ranging from medical image analysis and signal processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence, which I mainly focused on during my Ph.D. research. As a member of the Digital Athlete project of the Wu Tsai Performance Allience, I am now pursuing research to investigate how we can use wearable sensors, machine learning and biomechanical simulations to improve athlete performance, prevent injuries and support rehabilitation after injury.
I completed my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in medical engineering from Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuernberg (FAU). In 2015, I worked on my master’s thesis under the supervision of Prof. Kamiar Aminian during a research stay in the Laboratory of Movement Analysis and Measurement (LMAM), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), supported by a DAAD Scholarship. Afterwards, I pursued my Ph.D. at FAU in the Pattern Recognition Laboratory under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Maier and in the Machine Learning and Data Analytics Lab under the supervision of Prof. Bjoern Eskofier. I worked on projects in collaboration with Stanford University and the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS) and conducted several short-term research stays at the partner universities. After finishing my Ph.D. in 2021, I joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral scholar advised by Prof. Ellen Kuhl. -
Aakash Patil

BioDr. Aakash Patil is a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University working on deep Learning-assisted predictive modeling for high-dimensional spatio-temporal problems, particularly for turbulence in fluids. At the Center for Turbulence Research he works with Prof. Beverley McKeon as a part of a grant funded by the US Office of Naval Research. His Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics from Mines ParisTech - Paris Sciences et Lettres University led to the development of innovative deep learning methods for nonlinear dynamical systems and the creation of high-performance CPU-GPU frameworks for deep learning-assisted simulations. He was a co-founder of GreenPanda in 2014, a webtech startup catering SMBs, and exited in 2019 after 5 years of successful inclusion of SMBs in India's digital ecosystem.
His expertise includes building deep learning foundation models for high-dimensional spatio-temporal problems, scientific computing, machine learning operations, and quantitative analysis for complex scientific and engineering challenges.
