Achintya K. Bhowmik, PhD
Adjunct Professor, OHNS/Otology & Neurotology Division
BioDr. Achin Bhowmik serves on the faculty of Stanford University as an adjunct professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, where he advises research and lectures in the areas of sensory augmentation, computational perception, cognitive neuroscience, and intelligent systems. He is also an affiliate faculty member of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and Human Performance Alliance, and a mentor for the Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program.
Dr. Bhowmik is the chief technology officer and executive vice president of engineering at Starkey Hearing Technologies, a privately-held medical devices company with over 5,000 employees and operations in over 100 countries worldwide. In this role, he is responsible for the company’s technology strategy, research and development, engineering and program management departments, and leading the drive to transform hearing aids into multifunction wearable health and communication devices with advanced sensors and artificial intelligence.
Previously, Dr. Bhowmik was the vice president and general manager of the Perceptual Computing Group at Intel Corporation, where he was responsible for the R&D, engineering, operations, and businesses in the areas of 3D sensing and interactive computing, computer vision and artificial intelligence, autonomous robots and drones, and immersive virtual and merged reality devices.
Dr. Bhowmik is a member of the Forbes Technology Council, board of trustees for the National Captioning Institute, board of directors for Mojo Vision and OpenCV, board of advisors for the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley, and industry advisory board for the Institute for Engineering in Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He is also on the board of advisors for several technology startup companies.
He has also held adjunct and guest professor positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Liquid Crystal Institute of the Kent State University, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. He received his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, PhD from Auburn University, and attended the Executive Program at Stanford University. He has authored over 200 publications, including two books and over 80 granted patents.

Rohan Tan Bhowmik

BioI am an undergraduate student at Stanford University studying Computer Science and Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on artificial intelligence. I am constantly seeking to learn and develop new machine-learning techniques and build applications based on them, especially in the areas of health, environment, and human-computer interaction. I’m especially interested in brain-inspired computing for energy-efficient systems.
As a software engineering intern at AMD AI Group since June 2024, I’ve gained expertise in machine learning compilers and optimized model performance across diverse hardware architectures. I unified AI/ML model implementations for high-performance computing on CPUs, GPUs, and AI accelerators. I also developed masked and causal attention modules on Torch-MLIR and IREE, enabling models like LLaMa and Stable Diffusion on the AMD stack.
My other recent projects include the development of 1) a wildfire prediction method by analyzing trends in environmental, meteorological, and geological data with an aim to mitigate the impact of California’s devastating wildfire seasons, 2) a respiratory disease exacerbation prediction system based on a novel spatio-temporal artificial intelligence algorithm and local environmental sensor network, 3) a machine learning technique for automating patient facial condition assessment and surgery planning, 4) blood alcohol level estimation using infrared imaging and deep neural networks, and 5) a novel image recognition framework utilizing a quantum optical convolutional neural network.
I have published papers based on my research in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Environmental Management, IEEE Access, Electronics, and Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine. I have won top national awards in the USA Physics, Astronomy & Astrophysics, Junior Math, Computing, and Biology Olympiads and was named Regeneron STS Top 300 Finalist in 2023.
Outside of academics, I play clarinet, tennis, and volunteer with organizations to help sensory-deficient individuals, including the Baker Institute for Children with Hearing Loss, Starkey Hearing Foundation, and VocaliD. -

Clinical Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology - Maternal Fetal Medicine
BioMy clinical interest in pregnancies complicated with birth defects has led my underlying research interests in genomic abnormalities in the human trophoblast carrying to faulty placentation. The latter began with initial work during K12 and KO8 funding. I took a great interest in the human placenta as it carries potential advantages over other tissues sources: first, this highly metabolically active organ is the potential source of many transcripts. Second, the placenta forms at a very early stage of embryonic development, potentially allowing detection of primary alterations as compared to secondary changes that may mask the underlying causal phenomena. Finally, studying early placentation may provide targets for development of novel molecular approaches, such as up-regulate or down-regulate genes, the protein products of which could potentially serve as molecular surrogates for diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy complication such as miscarriages, pre-eclampsia, pregnancy induced hypertension and intrauterine growth retardation. This work has led to the first Trisomy 21, Trisomy 18, trisomy 13 cell lines established from human placentas making it possible to apply gene editing in the early stages of human trophoblast development.
As my primary clinical responsibility involves treating patients needing medical care and support through their high risk pregnancies, I am interested in factors that may impact outcomes, such as prenatal screening and diagnosis, maternal heart conditions, labor and delivery management, and safety approaches for the second stage of labor. In investigating length of labor and approaches to shorten the second stage, I have found methods of improving perinatal outcomes in diverse maternal populations.
With regards to my interest in fetal medicine, I have worked in collaboration with other specialists such as radiologists and pediatric cardiologists utilizing imagining studies to assess and determine successful perinatal care and fetal survival. -

Alex Bien

BioI am a 2022 graduate with a B.S. in physics from the University of Maryland at College Park, and I currently operate the world's longest and most powerful linear particle accelerator administrated by Stanford University under the direction of the US Department of Energy. Here I interface directly with the machinery, controls, and safety systems for three linear accelerator facilities: FACET-II where electron-pair beams are shot thru hot plasma to study novel wakefield acceleration techniques, LCLS where coherent x-rays of very high energy (and inversely low wavelength) probe deep into matter for imaging at atomic scales, and LCLS-II where commissioning is underway to produce a much more powerful megahertz rep rate superconducting beam that can leverage the same XFEL mechanism to (instead of just taking snapshots) also resolve the dynamics of chemical reactions in situ.

BioAnna Bigelow is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University. She received her MA from Columbia University (1995) and PhD in Religious Studies from UC Santa Barbara (2004) with a focus on South Asian Islam. Her book, Sharing the Sacred: Practicing Pluralism in Muslim North India (Oxford University Press, 2010) is a study of a Muslim majority community in Indian Punjab and the shared sacred and civic spaces in that community. Bigelow's current projects include a comparative study of shared sacred sites in India and Turkey and an edited volume on material objects in Islamic cultures.

BioDr. Vasiliki Bikia is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Stanford University, jointly affiliated with the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and the Department of Biomedical Data Science, where she works under the mentorship of Prof. Roxana Daneshjou. She earned both her Undergraduate degree and Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at Marywood University. With extensive experience in cardiothoracic surgery, Mary became an integral part of our team in 2014.
Her expertise spans both in-patient and outpatient care, where she actively participates in surgical procedures and contributes to various studies and laboratory research. Mary's proficiency extends to open and endoscopic vein harvesting, radial artery harvesting, valve replacements, minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve repair/replacements, ascending aorta/aortic dissection/aortic arch repair/replacements, redo surgeries, coronary artery bypass grafting (off and on-pump), robotic-assisted minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting, minimally invasive myocardial bridge unroofing, heart/lung transplants, VADs, and ECMO.
Beyond her clinical duties, Mary plays a crucial role in training new PAs, NPs, APP fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical skills. In the clinic, she performs history & physicals, pre-op evaluations, orders/interprets studies & labs, and coordinates in-patient and out-patient care.
Since January 2015, Mary has been the driving force behind the Stanford Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery's Human Biorepository Tissue Bank. This initiative has amassed over 1,000 human cardiothoracic tissue samples, fostering approved studies to advance cardiovascular and pulmonary disease research. Collaborating with over 30 partners and Stanford labs, Mary's goal is to facilitate research by providing cardiothoracic tissue samples to researchers and scientists across Stanford Medicine.
Currently, Mary holds the position of Principal Academic and Clinical Integration Developer in the CT Surgery Department, further highlighting her leadership role in our institution. In this capacity, she plays a pivotal role in curating and developing marketing materials and outreach strategies for the department. Mary's dedication extends beyond clinical excellence; she actively contributes to fostering academic growth and enhancing the department's visibility. BioMy research program focuses on the impact of sustainable building design and materials on human wellbeing. This work includes developing design tools to quantify nature experience in buildings, understanding and increasing wellbeing in and through affordable housing, and identifying the risk of forced labor in building material supply chains through fingerprinting and AI methods. The goal of my research program is to provide building occupants, designers, and owners tools to achieve built environments that meet their needs for environmental and social sustainability and to design interventions that support human wellbeing over time while preserving privacy. While no longer active in this area, my group has a long history of expertise in the design and evaluation of sustainable, durable construction materials including bio-based composites and ductile cement-based composites.

Michael S Binkley, MD, MS
Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology (Radiation Therapy)
BioDr. Binkley is a radiation oncologist specializing in lymphoma treatment and an assistant professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology.
His clinical expertise includes stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), total lymphoid and total body irradiation, and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
For each patient, Dr. Binkley develops a personalized, comprehensive, and compassionate care plan. His goals are to improve both health and quality of life.
Dr. Binkley has conducted extensive research to advance cancer treatment. In his post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford, he studied the use of genomic signatures to predict response to radiotherapy. His current clinical and laboratory research seek to identify prognostic and predictive clinical, radiographic, and genomic factors to inform individualized treatment strategies.
He has co-authored articles on his research discoveries published in Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer Discovery, Blood, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, and elsewhere. Topics have included innovations in the treatment of lymphoma and lung cancer.
He also has made invited presentations to colleagues at national and international conferences. He has presented the latest findings on radiation therapy for lung cancer and lymphoma at meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma (ICML).
Honors for Dr. Binkley include the Malcolm A. Bagshaw Award for leadership and outstanding scientific achievement. This award is named for a pioneer in radiation therapy and former chair of the Departments of Radiology and Radiation Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Binkley is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society for Radiation Oncology, and American Association for Cancer Research. He is a founding member of the Global nLPHL One Working (GLOW) Working Group, an international collaboration studying nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) in children and adults. -
Lacramioara Bintu
Associate Professor of Bioengineering
BioLacra Bintu is an Associate Professor of Bioengineering and a member of the Biophysics Program and Bio-X Institute at Stanford University. She earned undergraduate degrees in Physics, Mathematics, and Neuroscience from Brandeis University. As an undergraduate working with Jane Kondev and Rob Phillips, she used statistical mechanics to model transcription factor binding and gene regulation. She completed her Physics Ph.D. at U.C. Berkeley with Carlos Bustamante, where she used single-molecule approaches to study transcription on nucleosomal templates. As a postdoctoral scholar at Caltech with Michael Elowitz, she used live-cell microscopy to investigate chromatin-mediated gene regulation.
Her group seeks to discover fundamental principles of gene regulation and advance mammalian synthetic biology, with an emphasis on causal mechanisms, dynamic responses, and single-cell variability that enable signal integration at the population level. The lab develops tools to manipulate gene expression, for example by recruiting chromatin, transcriptional, or RNA regulators to defined genomic loci, or building DNA regulatory elements such as signal-responsive enhancers or silencers. To assess gene regulation responses at scale, the lab is using and developing new sequencing and imaging based techniques such as: delivery of large DNA libraries to cells coupled with sorting based on fluorescent and magnetic reporters, time-lapse fluorescence microscopy and in situ sequencing, or single-molecule footprinting of transcription factors and nucleosomes binding in live cells. Her group uses mathematical modeling to capture the fundamental principles underlying the observed gene expression responses and to predict new behaviors. This work provides insight into epigenetic mechanisms underlying development, cancer, and immune function and informs strategies for gene therapies that correct aberrant expression states.

My students and I devise new algorithms to improve the imaging of reflection seismic data. Images obtained from seismic data are the main source of information on the structural and stratigraphic complexities in Earth's subsurface. These images are constructed by processing seismic wavefields recorded at the surface of Earth and generated by either active-source experiments (reflection data), or by far-away earthquakes (teleseismic data). The high-resolution and fidelity of 3-D reflection-seismic images enables oil companies to drill with high accuracy for hydrocarbon reservoirs that are buried under two kilometers of water and up to 15 kilometers of sediments and hard rock. To achieve this technological feat, the recorded data must be processed employing advanced mathematical algorithms that harness the power of huge computational resources. To demonstrate the advantages of our new methods, we process 3D field data on our parallel cluster running several hundreds of processors.
Teaching
I teach a course on seismic imaging for graduate students in geophysics and in the other departments of the School of Earth Sciences. I run a research graduate seminar every quarter of the year. This year I will be teaching a one-day short course in 30 cities around the world as the SEG/EAGE Distinguished Instructor Short Course, the most important educational outreach program of these two societies.

Ettore Biondi

By leveraging high-resolution data from fiber sensors, his work yields new insights into seismic, hydrological, and environmental phenomena at varying scales. The innovative methodologies developed contribute to improved hazard detection, enhanced subsurface imaging, and a deeper understanding of complex geophysical interactions.

Brandon Birckhead MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Brandon Birckhead is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He works in the Stanford University's Virtual Reality and Immersive Technology Clinic and Stanford Anxiety and Depression Adult Psychological Treatment (ADAPT) clinic.
He was valedictorian for his graduating class of biological sciences at University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Followed by his medical degree at Mayo Clinic Medical School in Rochester Minnesota. He then received a master degree in healthcare delivery science at Cedars-Sinai. During this time he helped develop a set of recommendations for VR therapy clinical trials. He also helped design and implement some of the first remote CBT skills based VR therapy clinical trials for chronic pain. He was also the co-director of virtual medicine conference from 2019-2020. He then completed his psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins. During his residency he was a consultant to Apple, providing guidance on the Apple Vision Pro. He then spent some time on the Apple Health team as a clinical project manager.
Clinically Dr. Birckhead offers a comprehensive approach to care, integrating evidence-based therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). When appropriate he also provides medication management. He is interested in working with adults with anxiety disorders, PTSD, mood disorders, and OCD. He is committed to a collaborative, personalized treatment process—working closely with each individual to understand their unique challenges and develop a tailored plan to support their mental health and well-being. -
Christine Bird

BioDr. Bird received her PhD in Clinical Psychology and Quantitative Statistics from UCLA and completed her clinical psychology internship at the West Los Angeles VA. She is currently an NIH T32 Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford School of Medicine, working directly with Shannon Wiltsey Stirman in the CREATE Alacrity Center. Prior to academia, Dr. Bird worked in industry and nonprofit settings as a tech entrepreneur and business executive.
Dr. Bird's research focuses on the development and implementation of AI-enabled tools for behavioral health interventions. She examines how AI technologies can support therapist workflows, enhance fidelity to evidence-based practices, and improve mental health care delivery for both clinicians and paraprofessional providers. Dr. Bird is particularly interested in identifying sustainable pathways for translating academic innovations in digital mental health into real-world practice, with the goal of increasing equity and access to care. -
