Patty de Vries
Director of Strategy, Outreach & Innovation
BioPatty (Purpur '89') de Vries was born and raised in North Dakota. She received a full athletic scholarship to Stanford University, graduating in 1989 with a BA in Psychology. Patty became a 9-time NCAA All-American in the shot put and discus and competed in the 1988 Olympic Trials.
In 1995, Patty founded TimeOut Services, Inc., a pioneering wellness company that grew to over 100 employees and $5 million in annual revenue. Her team was instrumental in designing some of the original corporate wellness programs for leading organizations including Google, Cisco, Yahoo!, Safeway, and KLA-Tencor. In 2009, she sold the corporate wellness division and trademarked the Community BootCamp© program to Plus One of New York (now part of Optum).
Patty’s honors include the Key to the City of Grand Forks, North Dakota, *Business Journal* Top Women in Business, and recognition as one of the Top 50 Influential Women of Silicon Valley.
From 2013 to 2022, Patty supported wellness initiatives across the Stanford enterprise, including Stanford University, Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children's Health, and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, helping to advance innovative approaches to well-being, resilience, and leadership.
Today, Patty and her husband, Greg de Vries, are the founders of Living Well USA, where they lead immersive, nature-based workshops and leadership experiences on their 4.5-acre sanctuary in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Through her work, Patty integrates practical neuroscience, mindfulness, and nature-based practices to help individuals and organizations elevate performance, strengthen psychological safety, and design lives of greater clarity, energy, and purpose. -

Prof. Ramit Debnath

BioDr Ramit Debnath is an Assistant Professor and Executive Director of the Centre for Human-Inspired AI (CHIA) at the University of Cambridge, UK and a research affiliate Linde Centre for Science Society and Public Policy (LCSSP) at Caltech, US.
Ramit is an elected member of the DWP Methods Advisory Group (MAG) of the UK Government. He leads the Collective Intelligence and Design Group and climaTRACES Lab at Cambridge, and the Climate and Social Intelligence Lab at Caltech. His research advances computational social science and human-inspired AI methodologies for climate and environmental justice decision-making. Ramit is particularly interested in understanding social tipping mechanisms and its interactions with global climate action. At Stanford, he is co-leading the Stanford-Cambridge Inclusive Ordering Initiative at the Doerr School of Sustainability.
Dr Debnath has a background in electrical engineering and computational social sciences, with a MPhil and a PhD from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Scholar.

Charles DeBoer, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology
BioDr. DeBoer is a board-certified, fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon with Stanford Health Care’s Byers Eye Institute and a clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology.
He specializes in retinal and macular diseases, treating a range of conditions such as retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, macular pucker, macular hole, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and other complex retinal conditions. Dr. DeBoer incorporates state-of-the-art treatments in personalized, comprehensive care plans for each of his patients. He is dedicated to training future vitreoretinal surgeons and passionate about helping patients through both direct care and research.
Dr. DeBoer’s scientific background in micro- and nanofabrication, mechanical and electrical engineering, and medicine drives his research interests in implantable devices and surgical instruments. While completing his PhD, Dr. DeBoer co-invented a biomimetic accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) that treats both cataracts and presbyopia.
He continues researching microdevices, focusing on extended drug delivery from the lens capsule and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-enabled implantable devices. Dr. DeBoer’s research experience spans topics such as material science, drug delivery, IOL design, microfabrication, 3D printing, and medical device design. He has received grant funding for his work and has 12 patents in the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. DeBoer’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology. He has authored book chapters and presented to his peers at national and international meetings, including meetings of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Dr. DeBoer is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists. He is also part of the Society of HEED Fellows and Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation. -

Jeffrey Decker
Program Director, Precourt Institute for Energy
BioJeff Decker is managing director of the Technology Transition for Defense Program and co-instructor of Hacking for Defense course at Stanford University. Hacking for Defense uses the Lean Startup technique to tackle complex problems critical to the government around national security, energy networks, cyber security, and AI, and develop new technologies with teams of engineers, scientists, MBA’s and policy experts. With the program, Jeff has taught more than 300 students, faculty, and government personnel user-centered design from over 2 dozen colleges and universities, helping them solve more than 75 unique national security challenges for the Defense Department and related industries. Several student teams have gone on to form companies winning Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, gaining venture capital funding, and one team even became a program of record. Jeff’s work and research focuses generally on defense innovation and dual-use technologies, with a focus on developing go-to-defense market strategies for technology startups and fostering defense-industry partnerships. With his Lean Startup experience and expertise with Hacking for Defense, plus his military service, Jeff is a sought-after expert when it comes to national security and solving Defense Department challenges.
Jeff served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Ranger Battalion light infantry squad leader in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following his service, he earned a MS in International Relations (Laws), and a doctorate in International Relations before conducting national security and international affairs research at the RAND Corporation. -

BioCassandra (Casey) Mendoza Decosto (she/they) is a proud first-generation Filipina American from Los Angeles, California. A Pasadena City College alumna who transferred to CSU-Los Angeles, she previously studied singlet-oxygen photochemistry with Prof. Matthias Selke. Now, as a Chemistry Ph.D. candidate in Prof. Laura Dassama’s lab, she leverages bioinformatic and biochemical approaches to discover novel proteins that drive metabolite trafficking, membrane remodeling, and antibiotic evasion in bacterial pathogens such as Treponema pallidum. As a CBI ChEM-H and EDGE fellow, Casey works to increase educational and research access on and off campus through programs like Stanford’s Community College Outreach Program (CCOP).

Dee, Ph.D., is the Barnett Family Professor at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education (GSE), the Robert and Marion Oster Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR). He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Faculty Director of the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities. His research focuses largely on the use of quantitative methods to inform contemporary issues of public policy and practice. In 2024, he received the Peter H. Sebastian Dehe
