Stephen Hinton
Avalon Foundation Professor of Humanities and Professor, by courtesy, of German Studies
BioStephen Hinton is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Music at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in German. His research focuses on aesthetics, the history of music theory, and the music of Kurt Weill, Paul Hindemith, and Beethoven.
He has held several leadership roles at Stanford, including Denning Family Director of the Stanford Arts Institute (2011–2015), Senior Associate Dean for Humanities & Arts (2006–2010), and multiple terms as Chair of the Department of Music. Before coming to Stanford, he taught at Yale University and the Technische Universität Berlin.
Hinton is the author of Weill’s Musical Theater: Stages of Reform (winner of the 2013 Kurt Weill Prize), as well as numerous books, articles, and critical editions, including Kurt Weill: The Threepenny Opera in the Cambridge Opera Handbooks series. His work has appeared in major reference works and handbooks, and he has edited Beethoven Forum as well as volumes in the collected editions of both Weill and Hindemith.
His recent projects include a revised German edition of his Weill monograph (Kurt Weills Musiktheater: Vom Songspiel zur American Opera, Suhrkamp 2023) and the online edX courses on Haydn and Beethoven for the series Defining the String Quartet, created with the St. Lawrence String Quartet. -

Kent Hippler

BioKent Hippler is a PhD student in the Decision and Risk Analysis (DARA) Group in Stanford's Department of Management Science and Engineering, advised by Dr. Elisabeth Paté-Cornell. His current research focuses on risk attitudes in AI Decision Support Systems.
Prior to pursuing his PhD, Kent served as a Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, supporting three western Pacific deployments aboard the USS Anchorage and USS Theodore Roosevelt. He later worked as a Systems Engineer at Maxar Technologies and a Software Engineer at Amazon. Kent holds a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, summa cum laude, from the University of Florida (2016) and an M.S. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford (2025), where he worked with the Language Data and Reasoning Lab under the advisement of Dr. Amin Saberi. -
Kelsey Hirotsu, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Dermatology
BioDr. Kelsey Hirotsu is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed her fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology at the University of California San Diego. During fellowship she received additional training in cosmetic dermatology and laser procedures. She completed her dermatology residency at Stanford after graduating from Stanford University School of Medicine with a scholarly concentration in bioengineering. Dr. Hirotsu earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Hirotsu has presented at national and international dermatology conferences. She is a regularly invited reviewer for peer-reviewed journals and has authored numerous publications in top dermatology journals. -
Julia Hirsch

She holds a B.A. from Boston College in Philosophy with minors in Psychoanalytics and Women’s & Gender Studies (2015). She received her M.A. in the History of Art and Archaeology: Religious Arts of Asia from SOAS University of London (2020).
Julia’s current research explores Buddhist material religion and visual culture, power objects, and ritual from an art-historical perspective. Of particular interest are relic cults, funerary rites, and the importance—and soteriological potential—of sensory encounter in South Asian and Himalayan traditions.
Prior to joining Stanford, Julia worked for several years at Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, where she continues to serve as a contributing editor covering Buddhist art, film, and publishing. -
Karen G. Hirsch, MD
Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences (Adult Neurology)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Karen G. Hirsch cares for critically ill patients with neurologic disorders in the intensive care unit. Dr. Hirsch's research focuses on using continuous and discrete multi-modal data to develop phenotypes and identify signatures of treatment responsiveness in patients with coma after cardiac arrest. She is the Co-PI of PRECICECAP (PRecision Care In Cardiac ArrEst - ICECAP, NINDS R01 NS119825-01). The research team works closely with collaborators in data science at Stanford and with industry partners to apply machine learning analyses to complex multi-modal ICU data. Dr. Hirsch also studies neuro-imaging in post-cardiac arrest coma and traumatic brain injury, and with colleagues in Cardiac Anesthesia and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Hirsch studies neurologic outcomes in patients on mechanical circulatory support including ECMO.
Along with colleagues in Biomedical Ethics, Dr. Hirsch studies brain death, organ donation, and neuroethics. She is the Co-PI of BCI-DEF (Brain Computer Interfaces and Disability: Developing an Inclusive Ethical Framework, NIMH 1R01MH130518-01) which is a BRAIN Initiative funded study that is qualitatively evaluating end user perspectives about the benefits, risks, and ethical challenges of Brain Computer Interfaces for patients with acute stroke or traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Hirsch is broadly interested in improving neurologic outcomes after acute severe brain injury, identifying early phenotypes to guide precision medicine in neurocritical care, and exploring ethical issues in neurocritical care and novel neurotechnology. Dr. Hirsch greatly appreciates the importance of team science and collaboration. -
Frances Hisgen

BioFrances Hisgen is the senior research program manager for the program on the US, China, and the World at the Hoover Institution, where she also serves as key personnel for the National Science Foundation’s SECURE program, a $67 million effort authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 to enhance the security and integrity of the US research enterprise. Prior to joining Hoover, she worked at the American Chamber of Commerce (Hong Kong), at Caixin (Beijing), and at ChinaFile at the Asia Society's Center for US-China Relations. Hisgen earned an MPhil in World History at the University of Cambridge (UK), where she was the Paul Williams Fellow at Emmanuel College, and received her AB in History from Harvard College. Her academic work on the movement of people, ideas, and commodities spurred by European and American imperialism in greater China in the 18th through 20th centuries has been presented at the Cambridge World History Workshop, the Women's History Network Conference, and been supported by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. In addition to her work at Hoover, she is a Foreign Policy for America Next Generation Fellow in the 2024 cohort, as well as a 2024 New Voice in New America's Out in National Security initiative.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy main research work is in "outcomes research", especially examining the field of cardiovascular medicine. Particular areas of interest are the integration of economic and quality of life data into randomized clinical trials, evidence-based medicine, decision models, and cost-effectiveness analysis. I am also interested in the application of novel genetic, biomarker, and imaging tests to assess risk and guide clinical management of coronary artery disease.

Choukri Hmed

BioChoukri Hmed is Visiting Associate Professor in political science at Stanford university (Bing Overseas Program in Paris) and Associate Professor at Université Paris Dauphine, France (Paris Sciences et Lettres Research University). He is also research fellow at the IRISSO (Institut de recherche interdisciplinaire en sciences sociales, CNRS), and codirector of the National Scientific Consortium for Middle East Studies (GIS Moyen-Orient et Mondes musulmans, CNRS, France). Choukri holds a PhD in political sociology from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (2006), and an habilitation in social sciences from Ecole normale supérieure, Paris, (2019) along with a MA of Arabic Literature & Civilization from Université Paris 4 Sorbonne (1994).
His main works have been in comparative politics (public policies, immigration, revolutions, colonization...) and Middle Eastern studies (especially Tunisia). He has recently coedited the special issue « Revolutions and Political Crisis in the Maghreb and the Machrek » (Actes de la Recherche en Sciences sociales, n° 211-212, 2016). He has been Visiting professor in political science and sociology in several foreigner universities: New York University (USA), Cairo University (Egypt), Tampere University (Finland), and Institut Tunis Dauphine (Tunisia).

He is a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and is Director of the Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab). Ho serves on the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Commission (NAIAC), advising the White House on artificial intelligence, as Senior Advisor on Responsible AI at the U.S. Department of Labor, and as a Public Member of the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS). He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and Ph.D. from Harvard University and clerked for Judge Stephen F. Williams on the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit.

Dora Ho

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Ho did her PhD work in HSV pathogenesis and postdoctoral research in CNS gene therapy with viral vectors. She is currently the clinical chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine. She specializes in infection complications of immunocompromised patients, such as those with cancers, solid organ transplant or bone marrow transplant.

Edith Ho
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Ho plays an active role in the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Educational Affairs committee, where she chairs several abstract committees, directs regional post-graduate courses, regularly reviews physician course content, and develops CME content for the American Journal of Gastroenterology. She is also involed in the ACG Research Committee, which plays a criticol role in setting the direction of scientific advancement, education, and distribution of grant funding. Dr. Ho has also served as a guideline author for the American Gastroenterological Association on endoscopic therapies for weight loss and the medical management of luminal and perianal Crohn's disease. These guidelines shed new knowledge and set new standards of care for clinical practice here and abroad.

Sara (Suki) Hoagland
Lecturer, Earth Systems Program
BioSara (Suki) Hoagland is a Lecturer in the Earth Systems Program of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. She directs the internship program and team-teaches and mentors the undergraduate Capstone Project. She also teaches the Master's Seminar for the Earth Systems MA and MS co-terms. In 2021 she launched the Sustainability in Athletics course with a team of scholar athletes. Recently she also taught the E-IPER first year Research and Design Seminar and team taught “Gender, Land Rights and Climate Change”. Previously, she was the first Executive Director of Stanford University's Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Environment and Resources, (now E-IPER). She was a Senior Lecturer in that program and in the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. She designed and taught courses for E-IPER such as Case Studies in Environmental Problem Solving, Global Environmental Ethics, and Pioneering Sustainable Development in Costa Rica, which included a field seminar there. She also served as the faculty advisor to the Stanford Farm and the Stanford chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World. She has also been the Faculty Leader for 8 Stanford Alumni Trips to East Africa and Central America.
From 1989 to 2000, Dr. Hoagland was Assistant Professor at the School of International Service at American University where she created the International Environment and Development Semester, which included three-week field practicums to East Africa and Central America. Dr. Hoagland was also the Director and Clinical Associate Professor for the Masters in Development Practice Program at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, where she also serves on the Board of Directors. She earned her BA in government from Wesleyan University, her MA in International Relations and Curriculum Development from the University of Denver, and her PhD in International Relations from American University.
She was a national silver medalist in pairs figure skating and earned 10 varsity letters at Wesleyan in field hockey, spring board diving--founder and co-captain and lacrosse--founder and co-captain..The Suki Hoagland Award for Outstanding Contribution to Women's Athletics has been awarded annually ever since. -
Anh Tuan Hoang

BioAnh Tuan Hoang is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, where he is working with Prof. Eric Pop and Prof. Andrew Mannix. Hoang received his Ph.D. (2022) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Yonsei University and his M.S. (2016) in Bionano Engineering from Hanyang University, supported by the BK21+ Fellowship. Before that, he earned his B.S. degree (2014) in Chemical Engineering from Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Hoang's research interests span various fields, including colorimetric sensors, chemical analysis, displays, flexible and wearable devices, crystallography, and semiconductor physics. During his time at Stanford, he focused primarily on the wafer-scale synthesis and characterization of 2D semiconductors.

Quan (Donny) V. Hoang, MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Hoang's research focuses on extreme near-sightedness, a significant cause of blindness, especially in Southeast Asia. While mild myopia is merely inconvenient, pathologic myopia involves extreme levels of lifelong, progressive eye elongation and eyewall thinning that can lead to blindness. He employs cutting-edge non-invasive imaging to identify patients at greatest risk of vision loss, and leads lab-based studies to discover novel treatments to stunt near-sightedness.and prevent blindness.

Allyson Hobbs

BioAllyson Hobbs is an Assistant Professor in the History Department at Stanford University. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and she received a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of Chicago. She has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity at Stanford. Allyson teaches courses on American identity, African American history, African American women’s history, and twentieth century American history. She has won numerous teaching awards including the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize, the Graves Award in the Humanities, and the St. Clair Drake Teaching Award. She gave a TEDx talk at Stanford, she has appeared on C-Span, MSNBC, National Public Radio, and her work has been featured on cnn.com, slate.com, and in the Los Angeles Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Christian Science Monitor, and the New York Times.
Allyson’s first book, A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life, published by Harvard University Press in October 2014, examines the phenomenon of racial passing in the United States from the late eighteenth century to the present. A Chosen Exile won two prizes from the Organization of American Historians: the Frederick Jackson Turner Prize for best first book in American history and the Lawrence Levine Prize for best book in American cultural history. A Chosen Exile has been featured on All Things Considered on National Public Radio, Book TV on C-SPAN, The Melissa Harris-Perry Show on MSNBC, the Tavis Smiley Show on Public Radio International, the Madison Show on SiriusXM, and TV News One with Roland Martin. A Chosen Exile has been reviewed in the New York Times Book Review, the San Francisco Chronicle, Harper’s, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and the Boston Globe. The book was selected as a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice, a “Best Book of 2014” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and a “Book of the Week” by the Times Higher Education in London. The Root named A Chosen Exile as one of the “Best 15 Nonfiction Books by Black Authors in 2014.” -
Christina Hiromi Hobbs

Ph.D. Minor, Comparative Studies in Race and EthnicityBioChristina Hiromi Hobbs is an independent curator, writer, and art historian based in the Bay Area.
She is a PhD candidate in Art History at Stanford University with a minor in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity whose work focuses on twentieth century American art, modern and contemporary art of the Asian diaspora, and the history of photography. They are particularly interested in the intimacies of history, racial formation and historical memory, and vernacular archival practices.
Her recent projects include curating the exhibitions "In the Presence Of: Collective Histories of the Asian American Women Artists Association" at Berkeley Art Center (2024) and "Reflections of a Young Woman: Photographs from the Archive of Shigeko Kumamoto" at Latitude Chicago (2024). She also co-curated "No Monument: In the Wake of the Japanese American Incarceration" at the Noguchi Museum in Queens, New York (2022) which was featured in Artforum, Momus, Hyperallergic, The Guardian, and Public Seminar.
They have held research and curatorial positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Modern Art Museum of Shanghai, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, and The Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust. Her scholarship has been supported by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation.
