Denise Geraci
Administrative Director, Science, Technology and Society
BioAs the administrative director for the Program in Science, Technology, and Society, I am responsible for managing and overseeing the program’s operational, financial, and human resources. I hold a PhD in anthropology and have long been interested in applied social science and public anthropology. I am happy to support a program that trains students to think critically about how social contexts and processes relate to practices of science and technology. My professional interests also include community-university partnerships and international education. Before joining STS, I worked for Stanford Global Studies, managing professional development programs for community college faculty interested in internationalizing college curriculum. I also worked for Stanford's Center for Latin American Studies, and have more than ten years’ experience conducting research, working, and studying in Latin America, primarily Mexico, Bolivia, and Guatemala.

Vera Geranpayeh

Ph.D. Minor, Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality StudiesCurrent Research and Scholarly InterestsVera Geranpayeh is a PhD candidate in German Studies. Her dissertation investigates how Vera Geranpayeh is a PhD Student in German Studies and PhD Minor in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Stanford University. Her dissertation investigates how gender structures narrative movement in medieval German romance, focusing on minor female figures who remain structurally marginal yet narratively indispensable. She develops a framework for understanding how these figures catalyze plot progression through epistemic authority, mediation, and mobility, while remaining excluded from patriarchal mechanisms of narrative closure, such as minne and marriage.
In addition to her dissertation, she is developing a critical edition and English translation of a vernacular 1593 Franconian aristocratic household cookbook Ein koch büchlein vonn allerley speiß wie man sie kochen soll (1593). This project examines domestic authorship, women’s custodianship of culinary and medical knowledge, and the transmission of embodied expertise across generations.
Her research is further informed by training in Yiddish and a focused interest in early modern Yiddish texts, particularly domestic and practical writing, charms and magical materials, and the Yiddish Epic tradition.
She is also the student initiator of SCRIPTA, an interdisciplinary research group on gender, knowledge, and agency in premodern manuscript cultures, which combines theoretical discussion with hands-on archival work in Stanford’s Special Collections and hosts workshops with invited scholars.
She is the recipient of the Clayman Institute’s 2025 Marilyn Yalom Research Prize.
Her broader research spans queer survival, female bonds, and desire in nineteenth-century and fin-de-siècle German literature. She is the recipient of the Clayman Institute’s 2025 Marilyn Yalom Research Prize. -
Daniel Aaron Gerber, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioDr. Gerber is a critical care cardiologist and medical director of Stanford's cardiac ICU. He has dual subspecialty training in cardiovascular and critical care medicine and additional board certification in echocardiography. He completed his residency in internal medicine, fellowship in cardiovascular medicine, and an additional fellowship in critical care medicine at Stanford University and joined as faculty in 2021 as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.
Dr. Gerber manages the full spectrum of heart and vascular conditions with a focus on critically ill patients with life-threatening cardiovascular disease. He is active in medical education, teaching introductory echocardiography to Stanford medical students and residents, co-directing the Stanford Critical Care Medicine Critical Care Ultrasound Program, and lecturing nationally on critical care echocardiography and point-of-care ultrasonography at the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s annual congress. Finally, Dr. Gerber’s research interests focus on optimizing cardiac intensive care, including working with the Critical Care Cardiology Trials Network (CCCTN) - a national network of tertiary cardiac ICUs coordinated by the TIMI Study Group - and studying acute mechanical circulatory support techniques to improve patient outcomes and care processes. -
J. Christian Gerdes
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Emeritus
BioChris Gerdes is a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. His laboratory studies how cars move, how humans drive cars and how to design future cars that work cooperatively with the driver or drive themselves. Vehicles in the lab include X1, a student-built electric, steer-by-wire test vehicle; Takumi, a modified Toyota Supra capable of autonomous drifting in tandem with another car; and Marty, the electrified, automated, drifting DeLorean. Chris' interests in vehicle safety extend to ethics and government policy, having helped to develop the US Federal Automated Vehicle Policy while serving as the first Chief Innovation Officer of the US Department of Transportation.

Yael Gernez
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics - Immunology
BioMy clinic focuses on solving the molecular puzzles that underlie rare allergic and immunologic diseases to shed light on fundamental principles governing allergy, inflammation and immune system defects. My goal is to find better and safer therapies for my patients with rare diseases that include autoinflammation, autoimmunity and primary immune deficiency. It is important to highlight that every patient requires individualized therapeutic approaches based on their underlying genetic problem and the types and severity of their clinical manifestations. For some patients, a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is curative while for others, a targeted drug therapy, such as a biologic or small molecule agent, is most suitable. In some cases, a truly novel therapy may be required, .e.g., anti-sense oligonucleotide therapy to suppress aberrant gene splicing or adoptive cellular therapy. My passion is to provide the best personalized therapy for our patients with allergy and immunology diseases. This often requires performing very specialized functional assays and in some cases in enlisting laboratories with specific expertise or interest in particular genetic disorders.

Rabin Gerrah

BioDr. Rabin Gerrah is a cardiothoracic surgeon and specializes in surgical treatment of heart diseases such as ischemic, valvular, structural and congenital heart diseases. He has been trained at Harvard University and Columbia University Hospitals. Dr. Gerrah has been involved in multiple medical research projects and has patented and developed innovative surgical devices and technologies.

Elias Roth Gerrick

BioEli received his B.S. in Microbiology and Immunology from U.C. Irvine in 2013, where he worked in the lab of Dr. Celia Goulding. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2018 in the lab of Dr. Sarah Fortune, where he studied post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Eli joined the Howitt lab at Stanford in the summer of 2018, where he is studying the influence of protozoan members of the microbiome on intestinal immunity.

Margot Gerritsen

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch
My work is about understanding and simulating complicated fluid flow problems. My research focuses on the design of highly accurate and efficient parallel computational methods to predict the performance of enhanced oil recovery methods. I'm particularly interested in gas injection and in-situ combustion processes. These recovery methods are extremely challenging to simulate because of the very strong nonlinearities in the governing equations. Outside petroleum engineering, I'm active in coastal ocean simulation with colleagues from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, yacht research and pterosaur flight mechanics with colleagues from the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, and the design of search algorithms in collaboration with the Library of Congress and colleagues from the Institute of Computational and Mathematical Engineering.
Teaching
I teach courses in both energy related topics (reservoir simulation, energy, and the environment) in my department, and mathematics for engineers through the Institute of Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME). I also initiated two courses in professional development in our department (presentation skills and teaching assistant training), and a consulting course for graduate students in ICME, which offers expertise in computational methods to the Stanford community and selected industries.

Spencer Gessner
Assistant Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics
BioDr. Spencer Gessner is an Assistant Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University. Dr. Gessner was previously a Staff Scientist at SLAC researching plasma wakefield acceleration at FACET-II, and a Fellow at CERN on the AWAKE proton beam-driven plasma acceleration experiment. Dr. Gessner earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University studying the acceleration of positron beams in plasma. Dr. Gessner is currently coordinating the US 10 TeV Wakefield Collider Design Study and is broadly involved in research on future colliders from Higgs Factories to future Energy Frontier machines.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur medical education research group is developing and validating the best educational practices to train competent, compassionate, and ethical physicians and physician-scientists. We are studying the use of standardized patients and other modalities to improve clinical skill training and reasoning. We are interested in applying the rigor of clinical investigation to education research.
My areas of clinical interest in endocrinology include disorders of the pituitary, thyroid, and gonad. -

Olivier Gevaert

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy lab focuses on biomedical data fusion: the development of machine learning methods for biomedical decision support using multi-scale biomedical data. We primarily use methods based on regularized linear regression to accomplish this. We primarily focus on applications in oncology and neuroscience.

Ishita Ghai
Postdoctoral Scholar, General Internal Medicine
BioIshita Ghai is a health policy researcher that applies causal inference methods to understand how health behaviors are shaped through individual and group factors in low-resource settings. She mainly studies these empirical questions in the context of randomized controlled trials, or through evaluations leveraging exogenous shocks using quasi-experimental techniques. She has managed several pilot and large randomized controlled trials across sub-Saharan Africa studying the short and long-term effects of health interventions on health outcomes for women, children, and people living with HIV/AIDS. At Stanford, she will advance work on medicine policy specifically focused on the effects of the shingles vaccine on dementia risk among older populations.
She completed her doctoral studies in policy analysis (economics concentration) at the RAND School of Public Policy, and holds an MBA from the University of California, Davis, an Ed.M. in international education policy from Harvard University, and a B.Tech in bioinformatics from VIT University. -

Pejman Ghanouni, MD, PhD

BioDr. Ghanouni is a board-certified, fellowship-trained diagnostic radiologist with Stanford Health Care Radiology. He is an associate professor in the Department of Radiology, Division of Body MRI at Stanford University School of Medicine, and by courtesy, of Urology, of Neurosurgery, and of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Ghanouni is the director of the Stanford Health Care Minimally Invasive MR Interventional Center (MIMRIC) and the Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence. He is also chief of the Division of Body MRI at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ghanouni is recognized around the world for his extensive expertise in using advanced imaging to diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of conditions and disorders. As a renowned leader in diagnostic and MRI-guided interventional radiology, Dr. Ghanouni creates a customized care plan for each of his patients.
Dr. Ghanouni’s research interests include the latest advances in MR-guided focused ultrasound techniques to treat essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, prostate cancer, bone tumors, desmoid tumors, and uterine fibroids. An experienced physician-scientist, Dr. Ghanouni has collaboratively led clinical trials and research initiatives that explore treatments for epilepsy, pancreatic cancer, and several types of tumors. Through these clinical trials, Dr. Ghanouni has helped secure FDA approval for many MR-guided focused ultrasound treatments.
His articles have been published in dozens of peer-reviewed medical journals, including Lancet Oncology, Neurology, Investigative Radiology, European Radiology, Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Journal of Neurosurgery, New England Journal of Medicine, and Radiology. Dr. Ghanouni has been invited to speak at conferences and symposiums all over the nation and the world, including in Rome, Italy; Tel Aviv, Israel; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is widely regarded for his groundbreaking research as well as his clinical expertise.
Dr. Ghanouni is a member of several professional organizations, including the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound, and the European Focused Ultrasound Society.
