Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch Activities:
My research focuses on the environmental and equity dimensions of intensive food production systems, and the food security dimensions of low-input systems. I have been involved in a number of field-level research projects around the world and have published widely on issues related to climate impacts on agriculture, distributed irrigation systems for diversified cropping, nutrient use and loss in agriculture, biotechnology, aquaculture and livestock production, biofuels development, food price volatility, and food policy analysis.
Teaching Activities:
I teach courses on the world food economy, food and security, aquaculture science and policy, human society and environmental change, and food-water-health linkages. These courses are offered to graduate and undergraduate students through the departments of Earth System Science, Economics, History, and International Relations.

A Kurdish-Iranian musician, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer, and researcher, Ashkan is currently a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology and a doctoral certificate student in composition at Stanford University. Ashkan’s compositional work draws on the Iranian dastgāh system and Kurdish maqām idioms, while his practice at Stanford engages contemporary and experimental compositional approaches.
Ashkan’s more than 15-year research career has centered on Kurdish classical and folk musics as well as Iranian classical music. At Stanford, his work explores intersections between music and genocide, war, violence, intellectual movements, Islam, and Kurdish identity. He is also interested in developing decolonial ethnographic approaches to maqām as a cultural–musical practice and concept, particularly in relation to ethnicity and racism.
In his quest to explore those realms, Ashkan has already been prolific back home, with two titles: The Concept and Structure of Maqām in Kurdish Music, The Structure of Musical Modes in Hawrāmi Music. His articles have appeared in leading Iranian journals, and he has presented his research at international ethnomusicology conferences.
As the founder and conductor of the first philharmonic orchestra in his Kurdish hometown of Paveh, Ashkan has also taught Iranian music theory and directed Iranian ensembles, and has instructed setār performance and the analysis of Iranian classical music at the University of Kurdistan and the University of Art and Culture in Kermanshah and Sanandaj, respectively. -
Rahim Nazerali, MD, MHS, FACS
Clinical Associate Professor, Surgery - Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
BioDr. Nazerali specializes in complex reconstruction, microsurgery, and aesthetic and cosmetic surgery. He excels at breast reconstruction using free autologous tissue and performs advanced techniques such as the minimally invasive superficial inferior epigastric artery (SIEA) flap, as well as the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap procedure. In addition to autologous reconstruction, Dr. Nazerali utilizes the latest techniques in implant-based breast reconstruction. His techniques and results have made him a leading instructor and lecturer at national and international institutions, societies and conferences.
In addition to breast reconstruction, Dr. Nazerali performs both aesthetic as well as whole body reconstructive procedures. He has a busy aesthetic practice focusing on breast augmentation, face and body rejuvenation as well as body contouring. In his reconstructive practice, he specializes in abdominal wall reconstruction as well as post-trauma tissue transfers. For every patient in his care, his goal is to optimize restoration of both form and function.
To help advance the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Nazerali conducts research into outcomes of breast reconstruction, augmentation, and reduction. Dr. Nazerali has published widely: well over 100 journal articles and conference proceedings. Topics include breast reconstruction after radiation; advances in surgical technique; and, the use of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality systems in plastic surgery practice and education. His work has appeared in Annals of Plastic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Surgery, the European Journal of Plastic Surgery, the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, and elsewhere.
Dr. Nazerali focuses not only on improving his patient’s lives but also our ability to deliver care as an institution. He is on the Medical Executive Council at Stanford Healthcare, serves as a committee member in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. In his spare time, he volunteers his time to provide reconstructive surgical services to adults and children in need worldwide. -
Joel Neal, MD, PhD
Professor of Medicine (Oncology)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a thoracic oncologist who cares for patients with non-small cell lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma, and other thoracic malignancies. I design and conduct clinical trials of novel therapies in collaboration with other researchers and pharmaceutical companies. These generally focus on two areas, 1) targeted therapies against particular mutations in cancers (for example EGFR, ALK, ROS1, HER2, KRAS, MET, and others) and 2) the emerging field of immunotherapy in cancer, using anti PD-1/PD-L1 therapies in combination with other agents, and also developing cellular therapies. I also collaborate with other researchers on campus to apply emerging technologies to cancer therapy, for example, circulating tumor DNA detection. Additionally, in my role as the Cancer Center IT Medical Director, I coordinate projects relating to our use of the electronic health record to improve provider efficiency and facilitate patient care.

BioI'm currently a process engineer at Merck working at the Formulation and Laboratory Experimentation Facility with a focus on oral solid dosage production. I recently graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering and an Energy Studies certificate. At Yale, I was on the Varsity Men's Tennis team. My internship experiences during undergraduate studies included working as a Process Engineering Intern in ExxonMobil’s Technology and Engineering division. I was focused on modeling the extraction of battery grade lithium from brine. I also gained experience in the renewable energy and green engineering fields though my internships at Tesla and West Environmental.

Michael Nedelman

BioDr. Michael Nedelman leads the Stanford Health Equity Media Fellowship. He previously covered health and medicine as a journalist for CNN, earning an Emmy nomination for the network's acclaimed reporting on the Covid-19 pandemic. As producer for the inimitable Dr. Sanjay Gupta, he was part of a team known for excellent reporting and storytelling — also winning a Cronkite Award for tackling misinformation during the pandemic. Before CNN, he was a digital producer for the ABC News Medical Unit, worked on public health campaigns at the World Health Organization in New Delhi, and trained at the Stanford Journalism Program as part of the university's Global Health Media Fellowship. He received his MD from Stanford and did his undergraduate work in film at Yale.

Medical Director--Vapahcs Medical Surgical Icu, Medicine - Med/Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care MedicineBioMy training is in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, and I've been blessed to be part of the care of many patients and their families. My clinical research interests have been in the field of critical care medicine and ARDS, a type of acute respiratory failure seen commonly in patients with severe injuries or illnesses. I also have a particular interest in evaluating and improving processes for care. Issues like standardizing processes to improve reliability, improving safety of handoffs, and exploring ways to teach "roundsmanship" (the process of discussing patients' care with a group of providers) are current interests of mine.
The future of medical care depends on training the next generation of providers, and I'm thankful to be part of training this next generation. Teaching at the bedside or in formal classroom settings gives me great joy and satisfaction. I'm delighted to work with a great, multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists. I add to that team our patients and families, for it truly takes a team to provide care that is both excellent and compassionate. -
Leona Neftaliem

BioLeona is pursuing a PhD in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) at Stanford University. Her current research focuses on improving tree detection methods, understanding human migration patterns in response to environmental and socioeconomic pressures, and assessing drivers of urban air quality. She approaches these topics by integrating remote sensing, quantitative surveys, and innovative environmental engineering techniques at different scales and in different cities.
Before Stanford, Leona worked as a research technician at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, where she designed technologically innovative climate change experiments. She is a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, and a Stanford School of Sustainability Dean’s Graduate Scholar. -
