Andrew Rong, MD
Associate Professor of Ophthalmology (Research/Clinical Trials)
BioDr. Andrew J. Rong is a board-certified, fellowship-trained oculofacial plastic, reconstructive, and orbital surgeon with Stanford Health Care. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Division of Oculoplastic, Reconstructive, and Orbital Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rong has extensive expertise in cosmetic, functional, and reconstructive eyelid surgery. He specializes in upper and lower blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, revision eyelid surgery, brow lifting, and natural-looking periocular rejuvenation. He also treats eyelid tumors, eyelid malposition, thyroid eye disease, orbital tumors, and other complex conditions affecting the eyelids and eye socket. Dr. Rong performs advanced eyelid and periocular reconstruction following trauma, cancer treatment, and previous surgery. Whether performing cosmetic or reconstructive eyelid surgery, he provides individualized care designed to preserve eyelid function while achieving balanced, natural-looking results.
Dr. Rong graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. He received his medical degree from the University of California, Davis, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed both his ophthalmology residency and oculoplastic surgery fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He subsequently joined the faculty at Bascom Palmer and served as Director of the Oculoplastic, Reconstructive, and Orbital Surgery Division, leading one of the country’s largest academic oculoplastic surgery services before returning to his native California and joining Stanford.
A major focus of Dr. Rong’s academic work is oculoplastic oncology, particularly sebaceous carcinoma of the ocular adnexa. His research seeks to improve how eyelid and periocular cancers are detected, characterized, and treated through molecular diagnostics, biomarker discovery, and translational laboratory models. His work has advanced the understanding of sebaceous carcinoma biology, including the identification of novel diagnostic markers and investigation of emerging therapeutic approaches. Dr. Rong has also developed and published innovative surgical techniques for complex eyelid, ocular surface, orbital, and periocular reconstruction, including reconstruction following lacrimal and periocular tumor resection.
Dr. Rong has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters. He has lectured nationally and internationally on eyelid and periocular cancers, sebaceous carcinoma, ocular surface reconstruction, orbital surgery, cosmetic oculofacial surgery, and complex oculoplastic techniques. His research has been supported by grant and philanthropic funding and published in leading ophthalmology journals.
Dr. Rong is a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters.
