Stephanie Caddell

BioStephanie Caddell graduated with a bachelor's degree in environmental science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with minors in marine science and environmental justice. While at UNC, she researched marine microbiology, fisheries dynamics, and marine ecosystem dynamics in Ecuador and the Galapagos. Additionally, she has researched bycatch mitigation efforts in the North Atlantic for sea turtle species with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Now working on her PhD in the Oceans Department under the mentorship of Dr. Larry Crowder and Dr. Nicole Ardoin, Stephanie studies how relationships with marine resources shape stewardship. Her research sits at the intersection of marine social science and policy, examining how and why people care for local ecosystems and how governance can support—or hinder—this care. Her work aims to inform marine management policies grounded in local realities, ensuring coastal and island communities are equitably engaged at every stage of decision-making.

Levi "Veevee" Cai

BioVeevee is an incoming assistant professor in the Oceans Department, Fall 2027. His lab will be accepting PhD students and postdocs starting then.
His research aims to develop autonomous systems through machine learning and robotics innovations to enable persistent and large-scale monitoring, conservation, and exploration of ocean ecosystems.
He completed his PhD on marine robotics for animal monitoring in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program working with Dr. Yogesh Girdhar and Prof. Daniela Rus. He is currently a postdoc at the University of Colorado at Boulder working with Esther Rolf on AI for Earth Observations, especially in dynamical systems and oceans.

BioMy research program investigates the neurobiological basis of cognitive dysfunction across the lifespan, focusing on two critical populations: children with neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., ADHD) and elders with neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s disease). By employing a highly interdisciplinary approach that integrates cognitive science, advanced functional neuroimaging, and computational modeling, I aim to delineate the neurocognitive processes governing both typical and atypical brain development and aging. The ultimate goal is to advance our understanding of the factors contributing to cognitive deficits and translate these findings into improved diagnostic tools and precision treatment strategies.

BioBruce E. Cain is a Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and Director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West. He received a BA from Bowdoin College (1970), a B Phil. from Oxford University (1972) as a Rhodes Scholar, and a Ph D from Harvard University (1976). He taught at Caltech (1976-89) and UC Berkeley (1989-2012) before coming to Stanford. Professor Cain was Director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley from 1990-2007 and Executive Director of the UC Washington Center from 2005-2012. He was elected the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000 and has won awards for his research (Richard F. Fenno Prize, 1988), teaching (Caltech 1988 and UC Berkeley 2003) and public service (Zale Award for Outstanding Achievement in Policy Research and Public Service, 2000). His areas of expertise include political regulation, applied democratic theory, representation and state politics. Some of Professor Cain’s most recent publications include “Malleable Constitutions: Reflections on State Constitutional Design,” coauthored with Roger Noll in University of Texas Law Review, volume 2, 2009; “More or Less: Searching for Regulatory Balance,” in Race, Reform and the Political Process, edited by Heather Gerken, Guy Charles and Michael Kang, CUP, 2011; “Redistricting Commissions: A Better Political Buffer?” in The Yale Law Journal, volume 121, 2012; and Democracy More or Less (CUP, 2015). He is currently working on problems of environmental governance.

He serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he teaches entrepreneurship in Digital Health and A.I.. In addition, he lectures within the Stanford Master of Science in Clinical Informatics Management (MCIM) program, mentoring students through their practicum experiences. Furthermore, he provides instruction at the Translational Medicine Program (MTM) at UCSF, focusing on the translational challenges in medicine. Beyond his professional pursuits, Rene is an avid mountain climber, sailboat trans-oceanic racer, SR22 Turbo aircraft pilot, and Ironman World Championship qualifier. His dedication to humanitarian work is evident through his NGO, Volte-Face, which has provided over $1 million in free medical care for life-changing surgeries to underprivileged patients. As a board member for Sprouts, a California-based non-profit, he supports disadvantaged youths through skills coaching and internships. -
