Josh Shiode

BioJosh Shiode is Managing Director of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC), a joint institute of Stanford University and the SLAC National Laboratory. Prior to joining KIPAC, Josh served as Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff in the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, under the leadership of then Director Asmeret Asefaw Berhe. Josh received his PhD in astrophysics from UC Berkeley in 2013, and subsequently worked in a variety of science and technology policy roles in Washington, DC, including with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

This high-throughput screening (HTS) laboratory allows Stanford researchers and others to discover novel modulators of targets that otherwise would not be practical in industry. The center incorporates instrumentation (purchased with NCRR NIH Instrumentation grant numbers S10RR019513, S10RR026338, S10OD025004, and S10OD026899), databases, compound libraries, and personnel whose previous sole domains were in industry.
Among our instrumentation are a fully automated Molecular Devices ImageXpress Micro Confocal High-Content fluorescence microplate imager, with live cell, fluidics and phase contrast options, an Echo 655 Acoustic Dispense, a Thermo integrated HTS robotic system, a Caliper Life Sciences SciClone ALH3000 and an Agilent Bravo microplate liquid handler, and the BMG Clariostarplus, Tecan Infinite M1000 and M1000 PRO and Molecular Devices FlexStation II 384 fluorescence, luminescence and absorbance multimode microplate readers.
We have over 180,000 small molecules for compound screens, 15,000 cDNAs for genomic screens, and whole genome siRNA libraries targeting the human genome (the siARRAY whole human genome siRNA library from Dharmacon, targeting 21,000 human genes) and the mouse genome (Qiagen mouse whole genome siRNA set V1 against 22,124 genes).
The HTSKC main screening lab is located in ChEM-H W008, the cell-based assay development lab is located in CCSR Room 0133-North Wing, between the Transgenic Mouse Facility, and the Stanford Genomics Facility. -

Drew Spence

BioDrew Spence serves as Policy Program Manager for the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) where he leads policy education programs, student fellowships, and outreach to policymakers in Washington and beyond. Prior to joining the team at HAI, Drew held multiple roles in government, most recently on former Vice President Kamala Harris' legislative affairs team. He also served in the U.S. Department of the Treasury, in the U.S. Senate, and in the California Attorney General's office. He is a graduate of George Washington University.

He holds a PhD in molecular genetics and microbiology from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Before joining the OTL, he spent over two decades working as a patent agent in both full-service and boutique law firms, and in industry. At the OTL, Richard evaluates life science discoveries and helps develop IP strategy.

Alberto Tono

Grad RA student-Hourly, Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)BioTono Alberto is a current PhD Student at Stanford under the supervision of Kumagai Professor: Martin Fischer. He is currently exploring ways in which the Convergence between Digital and Humanities can facilitate cross-pollination between different industries within an Ethical Framework focused on augmenting human intelligence.
He served as the Research and Computational Design Leader in Architectural and Engineering organizations, receiving the O1-visa for outstanding abilities with both HOK and HDR. Tono obtained his Masters in Building Engineering - Architecture from the University of Padua and the Harbin Institute of Technology under the supervision of Andrea Giordano, Carlo Zanchetta and Paolo Borin. He has been working in the computational design and deep learning space since 2014. Furthermore, he is improving Building Information Modeling and Virtual Design and Construction (BIM/VDC) workflows within a statistical framework to optimize the sustainability impact of these processes. Hence, Tono is LEED AP certified. He is an international multi-award-winning “hacker” and speaker, and his work within Architecture and Artificial Intelligence brought him to companies in China, the Netherlands, Italy, and California. Thanks to his multidisciplinary approach he worked as Data Scientist and Geometric Deep Learning Researcher at a Physna/Thangs helping to raise over 80 Milion while working on 3D Search and Monocular 3D Shape Retrieval problems.
Currently is focusing on better methodologies for Generative Building Design, centered on capturing design knowledge from the primordial and universal act of Sketching.
