    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research is on race and inequality. I am especially interested in examining race and inequality in the criminal justice context. My most recent research focuses on how the association of African Americans with crime might matter at different points in the criminal justice system and how this association can affect us in surprising ways.

    Asiri Ediriwickrema MD, PhD

    Assistant Professor of Medicine (Hematology)

    BioAsiri Ediriwickrema, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Hematology) at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His clinical focus is on the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of patients with myelodysplastic neoplasms and clonal hematopoiesis.

    Dr. Ediriwickrema earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his MD (Cum Laude) from Yale University, and his PhD from Stanford University. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Hematology at Stanford, where he also conducted his doctoral and postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Ravi Majeti. His research identified novel populations of multipotent progenitor cells in normal hematopoiesis and leukemia stem cells in acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

    He currently leads a systems hematology laboratory that integrates advanced single-cell technologies, computational biology, and functional hematology to study both normal and malignant blood development. His research has been supported by numerous awards, including the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F32), the American Society of Hematology Scholar Award, and the Edward P. Evans Foundation Young Investigator Award.

    Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering

    BioMatthew Edwards is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering. His research applies high-power lasers to the development of optical diagnostics for fluids and plasmas, the study of intense light-matter interactions, and the construction of compact light and particle sources, combining adaptive high-repetition-rate experiments and large-scale simulations to explore new regimes in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and plasma physics.

    Matthew received BSE, MA, and PhD degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. He was then a Lawrence Fellow in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

    Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases) and of Microbiology and Immunology

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMalaria is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitos that is a leading cause of childhood mortality globally. Public health efforts to control malaria have historically been hampered by the rapid development of drug resistance. The goal of our research is to understand the molecular determinants of critical host-pathogen interactions in malaria, with a focus on the erythrocyte host cell. Our long-term goal is to develop novel approaches to prevent or treat malaria and improve child health.

    BioDr. Oliv Eidam is an accomplished computational scientist with over a decade of experience in drug discovery within biotech and pharmaceutical industries. As the Director of CADD Consulting GmbH, he leverages expertise in molecular modeling, data science, and cloud computing to drive innovation in drug development. His work has contributed to the successful IPOs of leading biotech firms and the advancement of clinical-stage therapeutics. A passionate leader, Dr. Eidam has built cross-disciplinary teams and authored over 20 high-impact publications and patents. He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Biology from the University of Zurich.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur basic research program focuses on understanding the roles of virus-host interactions in viral infection and disease pathogenesis. This program is combined with translational efforts to apply this knowledge for the development of broad-spectrum host-centered antiviral approaches to combat emerging viral infections, including dengue, encephalitic alphaviruses, coronaviruses, and filoviruses, and means to predict disease progression.

    BioAbbas El Gamal is the Hitachi America Professor in the School of Engineering and Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He received his B.Sc. Honors degree from Cairo University in 1972, and his M.S. in Statistics and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering both from Stanford University in 1977 and 1978, respectively. From 1978 to 1980, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at USC. From 2003 to 2012, he was the Director of the Information Systems Laboratory at Stanford University. From 2012 to 2017 he was Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. His research contributions have been in network information theory, FPGAs, and digital imaging devices and systems. He has authored or coauthored over 230 papers and holds 35 patents in these areas. He is coauthor of the book Network Information Theory (Cambridge Press 2011). He has received several honors and awards for his research contributions, including the 2016 Richard W. Hamming Medal, the 2012 Claude E. Shannon Award, and the 2004 INFOCOM Paper Award. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the IEEE. He has co-founded and served on the board of directors and advisory boards of several semiconductor and biotechnology startup companies.

    BioEvan is the Assistant Director of Physical Sciences Licensing at Stanford OTL. He has spent the last 10 years working in technology transfer managing a broad portfolio of inventions from Stanford and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Prior to joining Stanford, Evan spent over 10 years in alternative energy and power systems research and development.

    Assistant Professor of Psychology

    BioDr. Cameron Ellis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology. He leads the Scaffolding of Cognition Team, which focuses on the question: What is it like to be an infant? His team uses methods from neuroscience and cognitive science to assess the basic building blocks of the developing mind and answer this question. They are particularly interested in questions about how infants perceive, attend, learn, and remember. One prominent approach they use is fMRI with awake behaving infants. This provides unprecedented ways to access the cognitive mechanisms underlying the infant mind.

    Dr. Ellis received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 2021. Before that, he received a Masters from Princeton University (2017) and a Bachelor of Science from Auckland University, New Zealand (2013). He was awarded the FLUX Dissertation Prize (2021) and the James Grossman Dissertation Prize (2021), as well as the William Kessen Teaching Award (2019).

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe work to strengthen the foundations and expand the frontiers of synthetic biology. Our foundational work includes (i) advancing reliable reuse of bio-measurements and -materials via standards that enable coordination of labor, and (ii) developing and integrating measurement and modeling tools for representing and analyzing living matter at whole-cell scales. Our work beyond the frontiers of current practice includes (iii) bootstrapping biotechnology tools in unconventional organisms (e.g., mealworms, wood fungus, skin microbes), and (iv) exploring the limits of whole-genome recoding and building cells from scratch. We also support strategy and policy work related to bio-safety, security, economy, equity, justice, and leadership.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests“A picture is worth a thousand words”; The mission of my research is to contribute with a visual understanding for how molecules assemble and form functional structures in living cells/organoids/tissues and innovative biomaterials by probing inherent molecular/electronic vibrations using nonlinear laser excitation in a microscope: Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS), Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS), Second/Third Harmonic Generation (SHG/THG), and multiphoton fluorescence emission.

    BioBarbara E Engelhardt is a Senior Investigator at Gladstone Institutes and Professor at Stanford University in the Department of Biomedical Data Science. She received her B.S. (Symbolic Systems) and M.S. (Computer Science) from Stanford University and her PhD from UC Berkeley (EECS) advised my Prof. Michael I Jordan. She was a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Matthew Stephens at the University of Chicago. She was an Assistant Professor at Duke University from 2011-2014, and an Assistant, Associate, and then Full Professor at Princeton University in Computer Science from 2014-2022. She has worked at Jet Propulsion Labs, Google Research, 23andMe, and Genomics plc. In her career, she received an NSF GRFP, the Google Anita Borg Scholarship, the SMBE Walter M. Fitch Prize (2004), a Sloan Faculty Fellowship, an NSF CAREER, and the ISCB Overton Prize (2021). Her research is focused on developing and applying models for structured biomedical data that capture patterns in the data, predict results of interventions to the system, assist with decision-making support, and prioritize experiments for design and engineering of biological systems.
