Sarah Billington
The Gary Retelny and Family Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UPS Foundation Professor, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment
BioMy group's research is driven by two questions: how do built environments impact human wellbeing, and how can human-centered engineering design improve and amplify these wellbeing impacts? We examine how built features shape wellbeing across diverse populations and settings. These features range from access to nature and material choices to the use of ambient intelligence systems. With this knowledge, we develop tools, methods, and design interventions to improve wellbeing. We pursue this work through direct collaboration with those most affected, from older adults and caregivers to residents, communities, and the workers and practitioners who shape the built environment itself. In the past, my group focused on the design and evaluation of sustainable, durable construction materials including bio-based composites and ductile cement-based composites.

Nikola Blagojevic
Postdoctoral Scholar, Civil and Environmental Engineering
BioNikola Blagojević is a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Urban Resilience Initiative (SURI) within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. His research focuses on regional recovery modeling and urban disaster resilience assessment.
As part of his doctoral work, Nikola developed pyrecodes, an open-source software for simulating how cities recover from disasters. His broader research interests span earthquake engineering, software development, post-disaster data collection, and climate risk and resilience assessment.
In addition to his academic research, Nikola has collaborated with the insurance industry to improve tools for assessing business interruption losses.
He holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich (2023) and an M.Sc. (2016) and B.Sc. (2015) in Structural Engineering from the University of Belgrade, Serbia. -
Alexandria Boehm
Richard and Rhoda Goldman Professor of Environmental Studies, Professor of Oceans and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment
BioI am interested in pathogens in the environment including their sources, fate, and transport in natural and engineered systems. I am interested in understanding of how pathogens are transmitted to humans through contact with water, feces, and contaminated surfaces. My research is focused on key problems in both developed and developing countries with the overarching goal of designing and testing novel interventions and technologies for reducing the burden of disease.
I am also interested broadly in coastal water quality where my work addresses the sources, transformation, transport, and ecology of biocolloids - specifically fecal indicator organisms, DNA, pathogens, and phytoplankton - as well as sources and fate of nitrogen. This knowledge is crucial to formulating new management policies and engineering practices that protect human and ecosystem health at the coastal margins. -
Ronaldo Borja
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
BioBorja works in computational mechanics, geomechanics, and geosciences. His research includes developing strain localization and failure models for soils and rocks, modeling coupled solid deformation/fluid flow phenomena in porous materials, and finite element modeling of faulting, cracking, and fracturing in quasi-brittle materials.

BioCynthia is a Ph.D. Candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Stanford University. She is conducting research under the supervision of Martin Fischer (CEE-CIFE) https://cife.stanford.edu/.
Her research interests are Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Construction Robotics. She is currently teaching CEE 327: Construction Robotics.

Research Intern, Program-Osman, K.BioNative of Maracaibo, Venezuela. I am a nonprofit leader, a graduate research assistant, a perennial intern, and a recovering investment banker. After working in banking and helping early-stage startups in the sustainability space navigate funding rounds, I decided to pursue graduate studies in environmental engineering to expand my technical foundation in sustainability and renewable energy technology.
My previous research focused on traditional energy, and I have presented at over 10 economic conferences. I have also interned at a YC-backed startup, in consulting, banking, venture capital, corporate, and various nonprofits and universities. In my spare time, I co-lead a Latin American education and arts nonprofit in Houston. Other interests include worrying about Venezuelan inflation, visiting small towns in the U.S., coding in Stata, and hiking. -
Shawn Carrier

BioPersonal Information: I am from Levis, Quebec, Canada. I am fluent in English and French. I know the basics of Spanish, however I am not fully fluent in this language.
Academic History: I successfully completed and passed the FE Civil Exam in May 2026. I graduated at the top of my civil engineering class at the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering. During this degree, I received 20 academic awards excluding my NSERC USRAs and my Dean's List awards which I received every year.
Undergraduate Research Work: I spent two summers working with UNB's Smart Structures Research Group. Over these two terms, I was awarded two NSERC USRA awards. My main focus within the group was to program a MATLAB app to visualize and label accelerometer and strain sensor data from an instrumented bridge. Carter B. Casady
Senior Research Engineer, Civil and Environmental Engineering
BioDr. Carter B. Casady is a Senior Research Engineer in the Center for Sustainable Development and Global Competitiveness at Stanford University and a non-resident Senior Fellow in the Center for Transportation Public-Private Partnership Policy at George Mason University. As part of the Stanford Long Term Investing (SLTI) initiative, his research broadly focuses on the governance of long-term investments in infrastructure, particularly via public-private partnerships (PPPs). Prior to re-joining Stanford, Dr. Casady served as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Economics and Finance in the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction at University College London (UCL) where he also directed the Infrastructure Investment and Finance MSc program. He earned his BSc in Policy Analysis and Management from Cornell University as well as his MSc and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University.
