Tanya Marie Luhrmann

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHer work focuses on the edge of experience: on voices, visions, the world of the supernatural and the world of psychosis. She has done ethnography on the streets of Chicago with homeless and psychotic women, and worked with people who hear voices in Chennai, Accra and the South Bay. She has also done fieldwork with evangelical Christians who seek to hear God speak back, with Zoroastrians who set out to create a more mystical faith, and with people who practice magic.

Thomas MaCurdy

BioThomas MaCurdy is a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute of Economic Policy Research, and he further holds appointments as a Professor of Economics and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. MaCurdy has published numerous articles and reports in professional journals and general-interest public policy venues, and he has served in an editorial capacity for several journals. He is a widely-recognized economist and expert in applied econometrics, who has developed and implemented a wide range of empirical approaches analyzing the impacts of policy in the areas of healthcare and social service programs. MaCurdy directs numerous projects supporting the activities and operations of the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Congressional Budget Office (CBO), General Accounting Office (GAO), and Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), and Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC), and he has served as a member of several standing technical review committees for many federal and state government agencies (e.g., CBO, Census, BLS, California Health Benefits Review Program). MaCurdy currently supervises several empirical projects that support CMS regulatory policy responsible for the establishment of Healthcare Exchanges under the Affordable Care Act.

Liisa Malkki
Professor of Anthropology, Emerita
BioLiisa H. Malkki is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Stanford University. Her research interests include: the politics of nationalism, internationalism, cosmopolitanism, and human rights discourses as transnational cultural forms; the social production of historical memory and the uses of history; political violence, exile, and displacement; the ethics and politics of humanitarian aid; child research; and visual culture. Her field research in Tanzania exlored the ways in which political violence and exile may produce transformations of historical consciousness and national identity among displaced people. This project resulted in Purity and Exile: Violence, Memory, and National Cosmology Among Hutu Refugees in Tanzania (University of Chicago Press, 1995). In another project, Malkki explored how Hutu exiles from Burundi and Rwanda, who found asylum in Montreal, Canada, imagined scenarios of the future for themselves and their countries in the aftermath of genocide in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. Malkki’s most recent book, Improvising Theory: Process and Temporality in Ethnographic Fieldwork (with Allaine Cerwonka) was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2007. Her most recent book-length project (based on fieldwork from 1995 to the present) examines the changing interrelationships among humanitarian interventions, internationalism, professionalism, affect, and neutrality in the work of the Finnish Red Cross in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Virginia A. Marchman

Staff, PsychologyBioAs a developmental psychologist, my main areas of research are language development, language disorders, and early childhood development. I have worked extensively with parent report measures of early vocabulary, specifically, the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs). I serve on the CDI Advisory Board, and have worked on many projects including the Web-CDI, the CDI Scoring program, and Wordbank, an open repository of CDI instruments from many different languages. My current studies examine links between children's language processing skill, early learning environments, and individual differences in language development in monolingual and bilingual learners from diverse backgrounds. Our team also explores the importance of environmental stimulation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), showing that early engagement in developmental care activities (e.g., skin-to-skin care, holding, talking) has important consequences for positive neurological and behavioral outcomes. I am also involved in a large-scale NIH-funded project following infants born preterm from birth to 18 months, examining the neurodevelopmental and environmental influences on development in this at risk population. In addition to conducting studies that have a basic science focus, I have also been Director of Program Evaluation for the Habla Conmigo project, overseeing the evaluation of parenting intervention programs designed to facilitate caregiver engagement in Latina mothers and their young children.

Jeremy Martin
Postdoctoral Scholar, Political Science
BioJeremy T. Martin is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Political Science and affiliate researcher in the Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University. His research examines the politics of philanthropic organizations and their involvement in K-12 public education, with a particular focus on foundations that are created by Black people. More broadly, his work investigates how elite and non-state actors shape education policy.
Jeremy’s postdoctoral research project is a national, multi-year, multi-method study examining how foundations are responding to federal actions and political pressures. The project explores if and how philanthropic strategies and priorities are shifting—and what these changes mean for receiving communities. His postdoctoral research is supported by grants from multiple foundations, including the Walter & Elise Haas Fund and the Stuart Foundation.
Prior to joining Stanford, Jeremy was a Eugene Cota-Robles Doctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley. His dissertation research on Black foundations is organized around three core questions: (1) Why and how were Black foundations created? (2) What political ideological frameworks do foundations adopt? (3) And how do those ideologies shape grantmaking behavior? His dissertation represents the first national empirical study of Black philanthropic foundations.
Jeremy’s work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Du Bois Review, Philanthropy & Education, Urban Review, and others.
He holds a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. -

Grad Writing Tutor, Hume CenterBioI currently practice as a doctor and a medical anthropologist. I completed my MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India. My experience as a medical practitioner strengthened my conviction that there was much that contemporary medical pedagogy did not teach its students about health, care, and healing. I spent the next few years as a student of the humanities. I obtained a Master's in Liberal Studies from Ashoka University, Sonipat, India, where I studied the relationship between the linguistic and ethical dimensions of medical eponyms named after perpetrators of the Holocaust. At Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada, I completed an MA in Philosophy. My final project at Simon Fraser developed a framework to recognise oppression experienced by patients as they attempted to partake in knowledge production during their encounter with biomedical systems.

BioOriana Skylar Mastro is a Center Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University where her research focuses on Chinese military and security policy, Asia-Pacific security issues, war termination, and coercive diplomacy. She is also Foreign and Defense Policy Studies Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and continues to serve in the United States Air Force Reserve for which she works as a strategic planner at INDOPACOM J56. For her contributions to U.S. strategy in Asia, she won the Individual Reservist of the Year Award in 2016. She has published widely, including in Foreign Affairs, International Security, International Studies Review, Journal of Strategic Studies, The Washington Quarterly, The National Interest, Survival, and Asian Security, and is the author of The Costs of Conversation: Obstacles to Peace Talks in Wartime, (Cornell University Press, 2019). She holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University. Douglas McAdam
Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor, Emeritus
BioDoug McAdam is The Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor of Sociology at Stanford University and the former Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He is the author or co-author of 18 books and some 85 other publications in the area of political sociology, with a special emphasis on race in the U.S., American politics, and the study of social movements and “contentious politics.” Among his best known works are Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930-1970, a new edition of which was published in 1999 (University of Chicago Press), Freedom Summer (1988, Oxford University Press), which was awarded the 1990 C. Wright Mills Award as well as being a finalist for the American Sociological Association’s best book prize for 1991 and Dynamics of Contention (2001, Cambridge University Press) with Sid Tarrow and Charles Tilly. He is also the author of the 2012 book, A Theory of Fields (Oxford University Press), with Neil Fligstein and a book due out this summer on the historical origins of the deep political and economic divisions that characterize the contemporary U.S. The book, from Oxford University Press, is entitled: The Origins of Our Fractured Society: Racial Politics and Social Movements in Post-War America (with Karina Kloos). He was elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
